Mike: The dancer struggle is super super real.
Mike: Aw, thank you. I do hope I'd be able to out-shank as necessary. It'd be nice to not, of course, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Brittany: True, there is that, but if Jake and Ryder get paired up, I'll eat my dance socks. And those things are nasty. Others are, indeed, magical! Like a blonde and brunette unicorn who meet in the meadow and frolic all the day. Well, frolic and bust a move.
Brittany: Insert matching eyebrow wiggle.
Mike: Nobody should ever eat their dance socks ever. My mom wanted to kill me half the time she did laundry. She said they'd crawl away sometimes. I think she was half-joking.
Mike: Unicorns can be pretty bomb. Between the grace and the finesse, their horns can be used to bless the right people and shank everyone else.

Brittany: Too true. Well, girls are pretty weird, too, so there's that. Ugh, tell me about it. I mean, I know drift compatibility can't be rushed, but it doesn't make sense to pair people up who seem hell bent on killing each other. Even if they WERE drift compatible, I wouldn't put them together. They barely even like each other.
Mike: I mean, sometimes they see things that we don't. I feel like they see potential in people that we don't see because we're usually busy with ourselves and whatnot. Some compatible partners aren't completely obvious.
Mike: Others, of course, happen to come up like magic, like two fighters who blame it on the boogie.
Mike: Insert eyebrow wiggle here.

Brittany: They have clearly lost their minds. Why do they keep getting matched up? It doesn't make sense. Just because they are vaguely similar in that, you know, they're both boys and both like Marley, they have nothing else in common. They're going to actually hurt each other one of these days. Maybe they really do want each other if she wasn't even there. No offense, but boys are super weird.
Mike: No offense taken at all. We are pretty weird. It's even weirder that we try to deny it. Hopefully they've learned their lesson and they'll finally stop matching them up. It's super unproductive to keep stopping to break them up, and it's not like we have an unlimited time to match people, get them in Jaegers and save the world.

Brittany: Seriously? They need to quit thinking either of them are going to impress Marley.
Brittany: Or just kiss and get it over with.
Brittany: Each other, not Marley.
Mike: Marley wasn't even in the Kwoon when they did it, which is the most confusing part to me. But they were definitely yelling at each other about it.
Mike: They're clearly not drift compatible, I don't know why they keep getting matched up.

Mike: Duuuuuuuude. Marshal Sylvester had to separate Ryder and Jake cuz they started trying to kill each other on the Kwoon.

Brittany smiled as she watched Mike. He was obviously well liked on his own and not just because of his famous parents. “That’d be great, actually. Plus, I should probably get out of my pajamas at some point,” she teased, tugging the collar of her pajama top covering her tank top. “If I don’t call me, she’ll beat me with a wet noodle,” she teased, tucking her arm through his again, a bounce in her step as they headed back toward the dorms. “Should we meet in, like, an hour?” she suggested when they were near her door.Â
Mike nodded as Brittany made her decision, gladly letting her hook her arm through his again as they walked over to the dorms. "We definitely don't want that," he chuckled as they walked. Stopping at her door - the lower you were on the alphabet, the closer you were to the mess hall - he nodded at her suggestion. "I can do an hour from now, sure," he agreed, knowing he had a couple things to take care of before unofficially-officially training with Brittany. "So an hour from now in the Kwoon. Sound good?" he asked, knowing that it was free today for training.

"Awesome. We should totally do that today. I mean, well, unless you have plans and stuff in which case I’ll call my mom and go jump around in my room like a crazy person," Brittany added with a soft laugh. "I couldn’t be more done if I tried," she said, scooting her tray a bit toward his outstretched hand. She liked that he was chivalrous enough to take the tray for her without it being a big show. He was just doing it to be nice, not because he wanted to get in her pants. It was a welcome change.Â
"We can definitely do that today, yeah," Mike nodded. He had plans to hang out with the guys, but he did that all the time and it wasn't every day that he got matched to a copilot so he was sure that they would more than understand his canceling on them. Chuckling as Brittany declared that she was done, he nodded and took her tray, putting the dishes on hers onto his before putting her tray on the bottom. It was really just the right thing to do. Walking the trays to the designated area in the mess hall, he jogged back to the table, greeting a couple people along the way. "So did you wanna do the calling and jumping first?"
Word gets out (and paparazzi move) fast nowadays, it's pretty mental. I don't even care, though, I'm super excited to have a BAMF like Britt as my co-pilot. Eat your heart out, kaiju, you'll wish you never opened the Breach once we're through with you.

Brittany laughed. She wasn’t sure anyone really knew how they picked the seemingly random names for the Jaegers. Some people speculated they just had a list of adjectives and nouns and pulled them out of a hat at random. She was pretty sure that the Kaiju didn’t speak any human languages, so they weren’t intimidated by the names. However, it was likely they were for morale and, if she was honest, marketing purposes. Fluffy Bunny or Pretty Princess probably wouldn’t sell quite so many action figures as Cherno Alpha or Crimson Typhoon. “Besides, all the Rangers kind of hang out with their partners, right? So, we’ll be expected to be around each other more. Plus, maybe we can use the Kwoon to get our dance on,” she said with a waggle of her eyebrows. In all honesty, dancing together really could be easily considered training for them.Â
Mike couldn't help but laugh as Brittany wiggled her eyebrows. "We can definitely use the Kwoon to get our dance on," he agreed with a grin. Fighting was fun, and sure, okay, that's what the Kwoon was actually for, but he was just so happy to find someone who appreciated the acoustics of the arena and, moreover, someone he could dance with. He was sure that dancing would be a huge part of their training, as it was what led to their synchronicity in the first place. The team making their Jaeger would probably keep their dancing ability in account, and remembering what his parents were working on, surely they'd be working on one of the most agile Jaegers just for them "You done?" he asked as he got up, his tray in hand as he reached for hers.Â
I know they look all serious pretty much everywhere they're shown, but seriously, my parents are actually huge goofs. My dad couldn't keep it together as he was taking this, I turned around about a second after this picture...

"They should name our Jaeger Awesome Thunder or Thunderous Awesomeness or Awesome Squared or something like that," Brittany teased. "They’d have to be good people to make you, Mike Chang," she said with a smile, but her tone was nothing but sincere. She finally pushed her plate away, five strips of bacon and all but one bite of a waffle still on it. "I surrender," she said with a giggle, leaning back and patting her pooched out belly. "So, when do we get to start, like, officially training and stuff?" she asked, even though she didn’t know if he knew anything more than she did. Since he was already a Ranger, she assumed he knew more than she did. "I mean, can we do stuff before I graduate, or do we have to wait? If we have to wait, maybe we can do some on the D L," she added with a grin.Â
"You know, I have no idea how they name those," Mike confessed with a chuckle. "I'd imagine we'd be able to have some say in it, though." Hearing the sincerity in Brittany's tone, Mike smiled warmly over at her. He was glad that he'd made a good enough impression to her to gain that level of trust with her. Grinning as she pushed her plate away, he polished off the last of his own plate and set to finishing his tea. "You still got through more of that than I could, so props," he nodded before taking a sip of his tea. "We can train with just us for now, but they'll be giving us more directed sessions soon enough," he replied. He knew a little about this process, but not too much, as this was, after all, his first official pairing. "They're gonna get us in a mock Conn-Pod to make sure. We don't have to do too much on the D-L," he grinned over at her, finishing his tea off.Â

Brittany laughed and nodded as Mike got her reference. “You’re awesome,” she said happily. It was interesting to see how many things they were similar in, not just their fighting style. At the picture, Brittany laughed again, clapping her hand over her mouth. “That’s totally amazing. You know I’m going to have this picture in my head when I eventually meet them, now,” she teased. “Your ohana is great. I guess we’re kind of going to be ohana now, right? Closer than siblings and all that,” she said, quoting one of the ways they try to explain the drift to those who have never experienced it.Â
Mike grinned as Brittany called him awesome. "You're awesome," he shot back as he turned his phone over. His grin widened as he watched Brittany laugh over the picture. "That's probably the picture they'd prefer over all the serious shots they get in the newspapers," he assured her. "They're good people. My dad can be goofy when he wants to be. They're just, y'know, all business when it counts." Listening to Brittany talk about ohana, he smiled warmly and nodded in agreement. "We're definitely ohana now," he confirmed. They'd definitely get to know a lot about each other soon enough, a degree of closeness nobody else could really match.

Brittany was thankful that he didn’t try to push or feel sorry for her. She was surprised she’d actually told him about it. It felt okay with him, though. Besides, it wouldn’t be too long before they had no secrets. Brittany always wondered how true that was. There were some things so deeply hidden that not even the person who experienced them remembered. She wondered if those types of things came out. She hoped not. There were some things in her life she’d just as soon leave buried.Â
"Do you want to try to call them? I really should tell my mom before she hears it from someone else or else I’ll never hear the end of it," she said with a smile. Brooklyn would be excited as well; some of the people she went to school with couldn’t believe that she had a sister in the Ranger academy, but after they were assigned their Jaeger, and particularly after their first fight, their faces would be everywhere. She hoped it worked as a sort of status symbol for her sister. It wasn’t that she needed any help, with her bubbly personality and her incredible intelligence (and her lack of the quirkiness that Brittany never quite shook), she was as popular as a thirteen year old could be. In some ways, she was infamous as well because of her leg. When she first started getting different designs, their mother worried a lot, but Brooklyn said that people would look anyway, so they might as well have something cool to look at, and that was the last their mother said about it. Even though the elaborate designs were a lot more expensive, it was certainly worth it. Brittany shook her head and thumbed through her phone, pulling up a picture of her mom and sister and showing it to Mike. "This is my ohana. Ohana means family," she said with a grin, wondering if he’d know the old movie quote.Â
"Nah, if they haven't called by now they're either sleeping or they're busy," Mike assured Brittany. If Marshal Sylvester brought them up when she was talking to them, surely they knew by now. They'd call eventually. Looking as Brittany brought her phone out, he smiled warmly as he saw Brittany's mom and sister, happy blondes just like the one sitting with him. "Lilo and Stitch, yeah?" he smiled over at her. "You look just like your mom," he commented. "Here, let me return the favor," he grinned as he unlocked his phone.
"I mean, I know you know what my parents look like, but I have better pictures than the ones they put on newspapers," he assured her as he went through his phone. With a wide grin he turned his phone to show her a picture from the last time he visited them, a couple months ago; his father was holding chopsticks bringing noodles to his mouth with an exaggerated inquisitive look, his mother was making a face at the camera with a dumpling between her own chopsticks, and Mike was in the corner of the shot because he was taking the picture with his front camera, his chopsticks in his mouth to make him look like a walrus. "My ohana, off-hours," he explained with a grin.

"It’s okay. She’s got a badass prosthetic that looks all steam punk with these crazy gears and modern tech. Besides, she’s still with us. We have my dad to thank for that," she added softly. "He didn’t…" She shrugged and mechanically put a big bite of syrupy waffle in her mouth. "But we’re close. I probably annoy them with how often I call. Brooklyn is thirteen, now, and amazing in science. I wouldn’t be surprised if she works with your parents some day," she said proudly.Â
It didn't take much for Mike to put the pieces together; his heart broke for the blonde next to him, but he chose not to comment. Brittany had moved on so quickly to talk about her sister, so he took the cue from her, smiling as he talked about her science prowess. "My parents love seeing younger people still interested in science. I'm sure they'd love to meet her," he assured her. "They probably can't wait to meet you. I'm surprised I haven't gotten a call, actually. They're awake pretty much all the time," he checked his phone, where a clock that displayed the time in Hong Kong hovered next to the time in LA.
