Nancy Jack graphic novel, Nalo Hopkinson turns cultural aesthetics into pop culture phenomenon
âProfessor of creative writing Nalo Hopkinson and John Jennings have put their brains and collective talents together to make âNancy Jack.â This graphic novel is a love letter that encapsulates the discrimination and struggles of an African-American man in the 20th centuryâŠ
Bringing light to social injustice in society during the 19th and 20th centuries has always been something Hopkinson aspired to do â making the overarching narrative of the novel was simply an ode to that passion. Hopkinson would look at derogatory art aimed at African-Americans and remodel them to change their meanings and sentiments. This is largely how Hopkinson conceptualized the images of many of her characters and settingsâŠ
In designing the main character, Hopkins came up with the idea of having the protagonist serve as a porter working on a railroad. The catch? Heâs not human and his real form exists in a ball of pure fire. He has the ability to shapeshift and blend in with humans which he does to quench his desire for human company. Did I mention heâs a zombie?

Someone in my Twitter mentions was commenting on how the Media is always using celebs to distract us from whatâs going on in the news⊠As black people Iâm here to say that we KNOW whatâs going on.. And most of us can sit here and talk about Nicki and Miley beef and still know every single name made into a hashtag since last year⊠Black people are complex especially with our feelings⊠We can be so numb to all of the pain and all of the hate society throws at us YET in the face of it all we can make up dance crazes, kill it at the vine, and overall shine through all of the darkness while always paying tribute to our fallen. No awards show is going to make me care less about the black lives taken too early by the policeâŠ
Then they said âblack celebs have so much power and they donât use their platform to help.â
Ok but the last time Nicki tried to speak out about anything ole skinny white bitch Taylor decided black women suffrage was hers to comment on⊠What Iâm saying is no matter the status (celeb or average people) there is ALWAYS a white voice yelling over the top and trying to make us all shut up about the truth.. Nicki has a platform but the media was built by whites for whites.. Keep that in mind.. We (average black people) live in a world made for white people⊠We speak out and our boss fires us, our teachers fail us, they always find a way to silence us⊠All Iâm saying is thank god for the celebs who try to use their voices but please remember they still have restrictions in a white world just like we do.. Itâs a really scary thing.
Poor Person: I need food stamps so I donât starve.
Conservative: Thatâs lazy. Get a job.
Poor Person: Fine. I got a job, but it doesnât pay enough. The minimum wage needs to be raised.
Conservative: Still lazy. Go to college so you can get a better job.
Poor Person: Fine. But Iâll need financial assistance to afford college.
Conservative: Still lazy.
Poor Person: Fine. I went to college, put myself in debt, and got a degree. But the only jobs I can get without experience are unpaid internships. Businesses should be required to pay their interns.
Conservative: âŠ
Conservative: Still lazy.
Poor Person: How the hell do you expect me to get out of debt?
Conservative: Itâs your own fault. You choose to go to college even though you couldnât afford it.
Poor Person:Â But youâre the one who keeps telling poor people to go to college. Are you saying that Iâm lazy if I donât go to college, and lazy if I do?
Conservative: Yes.
Poor Person: Then what the hell should I do?
Conservative: Be born rich.
Someone put this PERFECTLY. f u c k

This website literally GRADES YOUR ESSAYS. You can choose your grade level, if youâre using American or British english, what type of paper it is (essay, short story, biographyâŠ), and it even checks for plagiarism. THEN once itâs grading your essay, it shows you grammatical errors, suggestions for better sentence structure, and a lot of other things. Reblog to save a life.Â
This were so creepy and they started every episode this way
A silent protest in Love Park, downtown Philadelphia orchestrated by performance artists protesting the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson. The onslaught of passerbyâs  wanting to take photos with the statue exemplifies the disconnect in American society.  Simply frame out the dead body, and it doesnât exist. Â
Here are some observations by one of the artists involved in the event:
I donât know who any of these folks are.
They were tourists I presume.
But I heard most of what everything they said. A few lines in particular stood out. Thereâs one guy not featured in the photos. His friends were trying to get him to join the picture but he couldnât take his eyes off the body.
âSomething about this doesnât feel right. Iâm going to sit this one out, guys.â âComâon man⊠heâs already dead.â
(Laughs.)
There were a billion little quips I heard today. Some broke my heart. Some restored my faith in humanity. There was an older white couple who wanted to take a picture under the statue.
The older gentleman: âWhy do they have to always have to shove their politics down our throats.â Older woman: âTheyâre black kids, honey. They donât have anything better to do.â
One woman even stepped over the body to get her picture. But as luck would have it the wind blew the caution tape and it got tangle around her foot. She had to stop and take the tape off. She still took her photo.
There was a guy who yelled at us⊠âWe need more dead like them. Yay for the white man!â
âOne young guy just cried and then gave me a hug and said âthank you. Itâs nice to know SOMEBODY sees me.â
Iâm just gonna keep reblogging this because this is truly how white America works. Like people have their weddings on plantations, Blackface was and still is a major source of entertainment and the biggest movie of all time was Gone With the Wind. White America will kill Black people and then smile and laugh and enjoy their day it sickens me that weâre treated this way.
this is so fucked up? that is literally a dead body
White people and their cruelty will never cease to amaze me
