Just a reminder that Saudi Arabia is responsible for one of the world's largest and most severe man made humanitarian emergencies. Their blockade of Yemen, which prevents food, water, medicine, and fuel from entering the country has caused a significant death toll. Emphasis here on man made as these were preventable.

Yemen relies on most of its food and medicine via imports and this blockade (land, sea, and air) has created an environment where 80% of Yemen relies on aid for survival. It's lead to so many people, mostly children, dying of starvation.

The rate of child malnutrition in Yemen is among the highest in the world with 2.3 million children under 5 requiring treatment for acute malnutrition. At one point a child died of starvation every 75 seconds.

Honestly I went to grad school to learn negotiation and public speaking and how to make Small and Medium Sized Enterprises ™️ more profitable. I don't have any grand plan to bring socialism back to Libya but I want to contribute even a little bit to making the country more bearable for working class and poor people

It's also worth noting that it's impossible for Libya, as it currently exists, to be proletarianized. We have virtually no productive forces. There isn't even a real national bourgeoisie beyond the oil sector, which is itself primarily state- and foreign-owned, including the technology used to extract the oil. Most people are employed in petty-bourgeois businesses such as small retail, restaurants, and other very local enterprises.

My argument, at least, is that foreign direct investment can industrialize Libya, create a genuine working class, and reduce the country's dependence on oil to some extent. Western advocacy NGOs and the liberal left are, by and large, useless, but the FDI environment in the mid-2020s has changed considerably from the era of naked exploitation in the 1990s. There are now better (for a given definition of "better") options, largely thanks to relentless lobbying by Global South IGOs and NGOs.

Per popular demand, my BA thesis on Libya's hegemonic reintegration and how market reforms contributed to the civil war, using a neo-Gramscian analysis. I got an A (80) on it, which is the highest mark awarded at my institution short of the examiner having to make a really strong case to the board, so I guess there's some value there if even liberal academics agree. The irony is that my MA thesis, by contrast, was a dry piece on sustainable foreign direct investment opportunities along Libya's northwestern coast because, in my view, if we've already lost the fight to neoliberalism, we might as well create an industrial base where people can find jobs.
