Instructor at the Conti school, Sébastien Gilbert will always remember the first steps of the boy from Nice. "He was the smallest one. His parents would buy him velcro shoes because he didn’t know how to tie shoelaces. Meanwhile, he surely knew how to use a throttle. The first time I saw him ride on the Alès karting track, it was raining. He would go into corners with his knee down and an energy that other kids, although older than him, didn’t have. When I saw him drifting his bike under the rain while accelerating, I knew we were dealing with a phenomenon. Along the training courses he would take, I saw him evolve much faster than everybody else. It’s that little kid who made me want to create my own school to help other kids learn about riding. Fabio kind of helped with my professional career change. What pleases me, is to see that he hasn’t changed, even when becoming a MotoGP rider. He still has the same light in his eyes, and he remained, like his parents, of an exemplary simplicity."

Helped by the Conti family, Fabio obtains a exemption to take part in his first race in Italy, near Siena. "Back then, he was too young to ride in France [says his father, Etienne], Romano Fenati’s grandfather was organizing a championship for the Conti in Italy. What we didn’t know was that over there, bikes had more than 20 hp. Our engine only had 14… At the end of the race, [Fabio] was crying because he couldn’t do anything to follow the others. Two weeks later, we came back with an upgraded bike. Fabio won by a landslide. Far behind, there was Romano Fenati and Luca Marini, the little brother of Valentino Rossi."
