Animation MDX Year 3

Here is the final film production for my FMP. I added in some credits alongside with a background of the bus stop to show in its entirety. 

250 word reflection

For this FMP film, I think I did alright, I am proud of my animation in this film but storywise, I think I could do better but at the same time, I still haven’t fully unpack everything that has happened. I wrote about my experiences dealing with my grandmother’s passing. This film was initially based on a dream I had where I accompanied an unknown figure which turned out to be my grandmother at the end. The beginning of the film used to be quite abstract and interpretative but as more feedback is given towards me and some changes, it turned into a straightforward journey about moving on. I am surprised that I was able to get a lot done despite the tight animation schedule and the difficulties with my audio track and some of my grad assists not replying on time but this is the biggest project I’ve worked on and I’m proud that it turned out well. I wouldn’t say there’s much improvement to give to my film because due to it being very different from what I initially envisioned it to be, I’ve grown detached to the film emotionally. The film does not represent my journey and how I feel anymore, I dislike how easy it looked for the girl to move on from their loved one but since the loved one is a “glowing wanderer”, I’m happy that I was able to animate something that is free to interpretation at the end of the course.

Here are my postcard designs. All of them are original illustrations done for the brief and what I think would look great as postcards printed out. The PDF files for them are linked here. 

An extra note for the 1st design, I wanted to make it an alternative vertical illustrated postcard but the back will stay landscape. I’m not sure if it’s possible to print out but I asked my peers on their thoughts and they thought it would be better if the 1st design has a vertical print.

Here is the current progress of my film for my reality check on March 6. I realised that the timings on my current line shots are really off, so I have to rework the frames for my second years to work on. My music producer also worked on the first half of the sound but she used a really old version of my animatic, so it sounds offbeat to the current timings of the film.

I also made a mini presentation for Grad Assist, I have no prior shots coloured because rest of the lined shots are in campus and I got Covid, which rendered me useless for the entire week.

Here is what I’ve done so far in the week. I finished all of the rough animation for the dark bus stop sequence but I am slow on lining the animation. On the other hand, I’ve finished working on the backgrounds for the journey sequence which is the longest sequence I have for my film.

Reality Check 1 - February 6

Here is my progression with my reality check. I reworked the animatic to make it less chaotic (with lesser papers) in the beginning and in the final version, I will make the Dark Figure look more like the girl as it was one of Robert’s feedback when I had the tutorial with him. 

I also started rough animating the dark bus stop sequence on TVPaint but it wasn’t what I wanted it to look like (the movement was off), so I scrapped it and start over from scratch. Which is why I am still behind schedule. I also communicated with my music producer and they informed me that they will have some draft music ready for me in a couple of weeks.

Here is the updated animatic for my film and for Robert to see in the following Monday. I added backgrounds in the end to make it more coherent where they are in the space and I’ve changed the darkness in the background to make it look like the back is getting darker rather than an eye. I also made the sfx and music in the video louder as some devices can’t pick up the audio in my animatic.

Here is the animatic (the only difference is the timing on the hands and the bus stop hold frame when the viewer first see it) I gave my sound producer. I initially wanted to have 2 music producers but I realised it could be difficult and complicated to do that, so I gave all of my music notes to Abigail. It details what I want each sequence to have and feel and some music references too. 

I also clipped my animation to shots so I can break them down and schedule my time accordingly. I will also use the clips as a guide to animation on top of when I’m animating on TVPaint. I also made a brief breakdown on what I’m going to animate first and last. 

The order I will animate from is:

Void sequence > Beginning > End > Dark Figure bus stop sequence > Middle (girl’s memories overflow)

It is structured from the least changed to the most changed, this is because I haven’t seen Robert yet, so I am hoping that if he has any criticism, it would be for the scenes I’ll work on the last.

Here is the updated animatic after seeing Steve on Friday (Jan 20th).  I have changed the framing for most shots (the frame for the extreme wide shot for 0:30 has change because the bus stop is too far away). I also changed the framing for the end to have it make more sense. 

The only feedback I received were the emphasis on the darkness in the middle sequence and the position of the bus stop during the beginning. The timing of the hands when the girl reflects on her past is also too long which I will change in my final animation.
