“You did? Oh, nein! I shall ask Herr Vonka if he’s seen it in zere.”
Mrs. Gloop whipped out her phone and dialed Wonka’s number.
“Hallo, @crypticcandyman? Have you seen mein son’s Hoberman sphere? He says he lost it in ze television room.”
“Did Herr Vonka answer, Mama?”
“Nein. I shall see if he’ll respond on his ozher number.”
Mrs. Gloop dialed Wonka’s other number….
“Hallo, @themasterchocolatier? Have you seen mein son’s Hoberman sphere? He says he lost it in ze television room.”
“Did he answer?”
“Keep your hopes up, Liebchen.”
The two plump Germans waited… and waited… and waited. No response. “Zat’s it! I’m going to ask Herr Vonka myself!” said Augustus as he charged off.
“Nein, son! Zat’s not a good idea!” Mrs. Gloop called, running after her son.
“Mama, I’m just going to ask everyone if zey’ve seen mein toy! Nozhing else!”
Before Agustus could make it out of the door, Mrs. Gloop’s phone rang once again. It was the Chocolate Factory’s number. This time, it wasn’t Mr. Wonka on the other end, it was Charlie Bucket.
“Hello? This is Charlie Bucket, I’m sorry we missed your call! Mr. Wonka and I were in the inventing room. He can’t come to the phone right now, he’s taking care of something.”
“Oh, hallo, Charlie! It’s great zat you’re zere! Go over to ze television room und see if you can find Auggie’s Hoberman sphere in zere. It’s a colorful, collapsible icosidodecahedron.”
“I’ll go check! Give me a minute to get to the Television Room. It isn’t that big of a walk from the Inventing Room, just down the hall.” Charlie left the Inventing Room, taking the phone with him. Though the phone was on a wire, as he walked down the hall the wire extended comedically down the hall with the phone. As he opened the door to the Television Room with one hand, he spoke into the phone in his other. “Do you remember exactly where he left it?”

Charlie walked along with the rest of the large group of kids and adults, him and Grandpa Joe near the back. The group followed Mr. Wonka down the twisting and turning hallways, keeping his quick pace. He noticed that next to him, one of the parents had her wallet open. He remembered that during reception she had said her last name was Gloop. “Hey, Mrs. Gloop, what’re you looking at?”
Mrs Gloop looked up from what she was doing. “Oh, hallo, Charlie! I was just looking at some photos of my pets at home. Vont to see zem?”
“Sure! I love animals, even though I don’t really have any at home.” He tried to look over at the wallet the woman was holding, but he was too short.
Mrs. Gloop looked down at Charlie craning his neck. She crouched down next to him, holding the wallet at his eye level. The first photo she showed him was:
“Zis is our hyper little dachshund, Mistoffelees. Ve call him Misty for short. He follows us around ze house a lot, und sometimes he tries to steal our sausages! But he’s such a sveet little dog to have around. He loves chew toys. Augustus got him vun shaped like a chocolate bar for Christmas last year, since dogs can’t have ACTUAL chocolate.”
Charlie looked at the photo in the wallet as Mrs. Gloop held it in front of him. “Oh my gosh, he’s adorable!” Charlie smiled as she told him the description of the dog. “Yeah! Dogs can’t eat chocolate, it’s poisonous to them. It was a good idea to get a chew toy for him, though!”

The second that the boy heard the word dog, his face lit up with pure excitement. “A dog?! I’ve never had a dog before! I’d love to have a dog! Are we going to get a dog, Mr. Wonka?” Charlie simmered down from his excitement, remembering the first half of what Wonka had said. “You need my help perfecting a creature? Did you make a dog?”
Wonka laughs guiltily. “Welllll, not yet! I have some designs but you usually are very good at helping me perfect them.” Wonka crouches to Charlie’s level “Plus it would be a dog for you Charlie. It seems only right you have a say in what kind.” He gives a kind smile and places a hand on Charlie’s shoulder.
“What kind of dog? Well, I’ve always loved golden retrievers, I used to see people walk them sometimes when I walked home from school. They seem like such happy dogs!!” Charlie rushed through his words, barely able to contain his joy. He was very excited for a dog.
“Charlie I think that is a spectacular idea!” Wonka rustles Charlie’s hair. He then starts fidgeting with excitement.
“Actually I can’t hold it in any longer I had a sneaking suspicion you would want a golden retriever but I couldn’t help but put a Wonka twist on it!” Wonka goes over to his phone and whispers into it. He flashes Charlie a smile and then the door slowly opens. In bounds a large blue and pink cotton candy colored dog. It gives cheerful barks, and it’s fur is impossibly fluffy. It runs around Wonka and then plops down in front of Charlie.
“So what do you think?” Wonka goes over and pats the dogs head. “Oh! I almost forgot. He needs a name too.”
Charlie watched in awe as the dog bounds in. He could barely find words to describe his excitement. He looked at the dog as it sat down in front of him, amazed. Charlie leaped forward and hugged the dog, petting it happily. The dog wagged it’s tail as it licked the boys face. “Mr. Wonka. I love him!! He’s amazing! He’s so soft, how did you even do this?!” Charlie laughed happily as the dog licked him. “A name? Gosh, I’m not sure what to name him..”
Wonka laughs “I’m so glad you like him! And a few gene spicing sessions between a retriever and some cotton candy seemed to do the trick.”
Wonka kneels down to pet the dog. “Yes his fur is made completely out of cotton candy!” He takes a small piece off and eats it. The chunk missing from candy dog immediately returns. “If you are having troubles with names in the lab we used to call him Pat.” Candy dog rolls around on the floor stretching his back. “It’s short for Patrick, but also because he enjoys-” Wonka pats Candy Dog’s tummy. “A good pat.”
He chuckled as he watched Candy Dog roll around. “I think Pat is a perfect name!” Charlie said, calming down from the dog hype. “I hope he doesn’t make a mess.. does he shed? Can cotton candy even shed?”
Wonka pauses in thought and crouches down onto Pat’s level. Gently he takes a small bit of the cotton candy fur. Quickly it bounces back to its original shape. Wonka pops the piece of fluffy candy in his mouth “Well Pat doesnt shed like your average dog but rather has to be sheared like a sheep.” Wonka clenches his face in disgust “Still working on getting rid of that wet dog taste eghhh”
“Well at least he won’t make a mess! We just have to make sure we shear him regularly. I’m sure my family will be happy about that-” Charlie’s sentence trailed off as his expression of excitement turned into a mixture of realization and panic. “My family! My mom would never let me have a dog! Would she? We’ve never had a dog! What if she doesn’t want the dog??”
Wonka stares into nothing for a second and then speaks up “I..did not think of that.” He rubs his chin “Hmm, what are the chances she would notice I mean. This factory is ginormous!” He nervously laughs
“But she’s my mom. She’s bound to see me with Pat at some point!” He looks down at Pat, and then back at Wonka. “We can’t just hide him, he’s very large.”
“We-we…” Wonka jumps “We could shrink him! Mrs. Bucket would never be the wiser.” He taps his cane “Yes yes shrinking would work just fine the only problem is…the unshriking is always the tricky part, but no reason to worry about that now! Come along!” He started to speedily walk down the hallway
“That’s a good idea!” Charlie followed Wonka down the hall, Pat bounding behind him. “Are we gonna use the television room and shrink him like how you did with Mike?”

“How do I feel about snails? I like snails. I remember when I was buying cabbage from Mrs. Green one afternoon on my way home from school. There was a snail on it and I named him Will. I left him in a garden on my way home!”

“Ja, ja, Charlie! Augustus is perfectly fine! Ve’re still able to go about our usual activities, such as paintball on Saturday mornings!”
“Oh, that sounds fun! I’m glad he’s okay, that’s really good to hear! Does he still love chocolate as much as he used to?”
“Ja, only Vonka’s fudge has lost its appeal to him, since he vas almost made into it.”
Gertrude hesitates for a moment.
“I can NOT imagine eating cabbage vater for dinner every night of my life!”
She wrinkles her nose.
“Here, Charlie. Have vun of my husband’s famous sausages. I svear to you zat zey are much better zen cabbage vater!”
Charlie looked at his feet. “Yeah, Cabbage Suprise isn’t very good.” He looked back up. “But at least I don’t have to eat that anymore! Every since the tour, I live in the factory with Mr. Wonka!”
Charlie considered the offer, but decided to decline. “No thanks, I’m not very hungry at the moment.” He chuckled under his breath. “I think that’s the first time I’ve said that sentence.”
Gertrude was about to say, “Okay, then! More for me!” but then noticed what Charlie had said after he declined the offer. She put the sausage back in her bag and knelt down to hug Charlie.
“I’m glad you’re vell fed now, Charlie,” she whispered into his ear, “even if you’re not as vell fed as my family.”
Little tears welled up in Gertrude’s eyes as she breathed these words to Charlie.
“Ich hab’ dich lieb, Charlie. Not as much as I do Augustus, but… Ich hab’ dich lieb.”
Tears welled up in Charlie’s eyes as well, though he wiped them away with his sleeve. “Thank you, Mrs. Gloop..” He hugged Mrs. Gloop back. “That means a lot. I’m really happy to finally be in a place where I don’t have to be hungry anymore.”

Wonka laughs guiltily. “Welllll, not yet! I have some designs but you usually are very good at helping me perfect them.” Wonka crouches to Charlie’s level “Plus it would be a dog for you Charlie. It seems only right you have a say in what kind.” He gives a kind smile and places a hand on Charlie’s shoulder.
“What kind of dog? Well, I’ve always loved golden retrievers, I used to see people walk them sometimes when I walked home from school. They seem like such happy dogs!!” Charlie rushed through his words, barely able to contain his joy. He was very excited for a dog.
“Charlie I think that is a spectacular idea!” Wonka rustles Charlie’s hair. He then starts fidgeting with excitement.
“Actually I can’t hold it in any longer I had a sneaking suspicion you would want a golden retriever but I couldn’t help but put a Wonka twist on it!” Wonka goes over to his phone and whispers into it. He flashes Charlie a smile and then the door slowly opens. In bounds a large blue and pink cotton candy colored dog. It gives cheerful barks, and it’s fur is impossibly fluffy. It runs around Wonka and then plops down in front of Charlie.
“So what do you think?” Wonka goes over and pats the dogs head. “Oh! I almost forgot. He needs a name too.”
Charlie watched in awe as the dog bounds in. He could barely find words to describe his excitement. He looked at the dog as it sat down in front of him, amazed. Charlie leaped forward and hugged the dog, petting it happily. The dog wagged it’s tail as it licked the boys face. “Mr. Wonka. I love him!! He’s amazing! He’s so soft, how did you even do this?!” Charlie laughed happily as the dog licked him. “A name? Gosh, I’m not sure what to name him..”
