Revisiting forgotten Genshin content part 1: Fishing!
During my exploration on the shores of Hiisi Island, I've noticed a grey-haired dude in desperate need of my assistance. My curiosity gave in, so I decided to check what's up.
Very soon, I lost interest in whatever troubled this young gentleman and was locked in purely for the rewards.
What's interesting is that this little quest unlocked a fishing spot for me, and this unlocked a core memory of me trying not to kill myself while fishing for The Catch in Inazuma.
"Hmm, the last time I fished was in Fontaine for the pipe sword. Maybe there's some cool rewards in Sumeru, Natlan and Nod-Krai too! Let's check it out." I thought to myself.
And so I went to each region's fishing vendor, blindly purchased the bait recipes (with countless Medaka I already had in my inventory), crafted them and ventured on a quest for some fishies.
A little foreshadowing: I should've checked the rewards for fishing beforehand.
So I went, completely ignored Sumeru for some reason (just realised that now) and fished out every single fishing spot during every possible spawntime in Natlan and Nod-Krai. Then I asked my partner and my friend to let me fish in their worlds. I fished out every, single, one of their spots. Both of them even changed the time for me (bless their hearts).
Here are the rewards for fishing in Natlan and Nod-Krai:
While the fishing rods are beneficial to use in their dedicated regions, they become obsolete the moment you get them, as you collect enough fish for all items during your farm for the said fishing rod. Still, those fishing rods are pretty cool and the sense of achievement I got when I unlocked them was immense, therefore I highly recommend getting some (if not all).
The second item is a teapot furnishing blueprint, which immediately became my goal. I have to admit that I am a sucker for the teapot. I love to decorate it, and I am a bit satisfied with getting at least something useful out of fishing other than my completionist badge in the form of a shiny fishing rod.
The only possible use of the regional fishing rods could be achievement hunting, as there's an achievement that requires you to catch 2000 fish in total. The fishing rod could make the whole process a little bit easier, but still. If you were to catch enough fish to get every single item from every single fishing vendor in Teyvat so far, just this would probably be enough to secure the achievement for you.
However, I do not want to make this post sound like a hate post. Fishing in this game is very fun and relaxing, especially when you turn off the dialogue volume. As the adhd completionist I am - which by my definition means: "Will check off everything as long as I don't burn out"- the fishing rods will be the ultimate bragging rights for me, so I will get them all and hopefully still feel the motivation for fishing when the new region drops.
Fishing can also reward you with special ornamental fish, which can be easily spotted as they jump around, while normal fish don't. These fishies can be placed in your teapot.
As cool as these might seem, they can be annoying, especially when you need one last fish to get the last weapon refinement material and that one last fish just happens to be the ornamental fish.
One last thing that some fish can reward you with is materials. Certain fish - for example, those meka fishies - can be disassembled at the crafting table to obtain materials used to level up character talents or ascend weapons. This made me really happy when I found out about it because they managed to cover all of my Wrio talent mats besides books ^^/
And now, what can we do to make fishing better?
My idea would be: more fishing events with unlimited fish, or at least unlimited Medaka for jokes. Maybe some visual upgrades for our fishing rods. A great motivation could be more items available at the fishing vendors. I don't necessarily mean weapons - those items could be recipes, materials, more region-specific fishing related teapot blueprints etc.
I think there are a lot of opportunities to motivate players to fish more, but it's often overlooked due to how unpopular it already is. With Mondstadt expansion over the horizon, I hope we can expect some new fishing updates because, after my reflection on my fishing journey so far, I'm proud to say that I'm a fan of fishing in Genshin!
