âThis photograph is my proof. There was that afternoon, when things were still good between us, and she embraced me, and we were so happy. It did happen. She did love me. Look for yourself.â This is my proof, Duane Michals, 1974

âSilence. How long it lasted, I couldnât tell. It might have been five seconds, it might have been a minute. Time wasnât fixed. It wavered, stretched, shrank. Or was it me that wavered, stretched, and shrank in the silence? I was warped in the folds of time, like a reflection in a fun house mirror.â Haruki Murakami, Dance dance dance. ⨠The Ritual. Cindy Sherman, from Untitled Film Stills, 1977-1980
Other artists had drawn upon popular culture, but Shermanâs strategy was new. For her the pop-culture image was not a subject (as it had been for Walker Evans) or raw material (as it had been for Andy Warhol) but a whole artistic vocabulary, ready-made. Her film stills look and function just like the real onesâthose 8-by-10-inch glossies designed to lure us into a drama we find all the more compelling because we know it is not real.
In theUntitled Film Stills there are no Cleopatras, no ladies on trains, no women of a certain age. There are, of course, no men. The sixty-nine solitary heroines map a particular constellation of fictional femininity that took hold in postwar Americaâthe period of Shermanâs youth, and the ground-zero of our contemporary mythology. In finding a form for her own sensibility, Sherman touched a sensitive nerve in the culture at large. (via)

Frenzy of Exultations (1893)
WĹadysĹaw PodkowiĹskiâs best known painting, Frenzy of Exultations (SzaĹ uniesieĹ) was shown at the ZachÄta on 18 March 1894. The exhibition was accompanied by an atmosphere of sensationalism and scandal and the painting was violently criticized. The exhibition lasted only 36 days because the terminally ill Podkowinski brought a knife on the 37th day, and slashed his work on display. The reasons for this act are unclear. After his death the painting was eventualling restored.[1]
