Let's talk about: COMPETITION (IN MED SCHOOL)
“You want to know what scares people? Success. When you don’t make moves and when you don’t climb up the ladder, everybody loves you because you’re not competition.” -N.M.
Competition. Something that stresses us, something that keeps us going, but where’s the right balance?
Good. Better. Best. - Survival of the best. (Distress)
We all have this one person in our life, that likes to show off with grades, internships & relationships. It sometimes makes us feel like nobodies, but hey not all that glitters is gold. They want us to see only the good stuff. Everyone has insecurities.
Something that keeps people going (Eustress)
On the other hand we have to thank those prattlers because they inspire us to do m o r e: competition infrequently gives us the one push we needed for accomplishing our goals.
How to avoid bad competition
A shut mouth catches no flies: Speaking from my personal experience it’s sometimes better to keep one’s mouth shut: Don’t tell your grades .. Say “I’m happy with it.” or “I’d like to be better next time.” or you’re planning a voluntary internship? Great, but do you really want to tell everyone?
Don’t be too hard to yourself: So you didn’t get the grades you wanted to? You’ll survive it. It may be a disappointment in first place, but talking yourself down won’t change your situation. Try to find out your weaknesses & be better next time!
There’ll always be people better than you: Especially in med school. (& other studies of course!) Do you really want to spend all of your time studying & planing your career? Life’s too short. Travel. Laugh. Live. Try to find a balance.
Distance yourself from phonies: Go out with your friends, distract yourself, recharge your batteries!
As an ambitious personal myself I often have to deal with self-doubts, but I’m working on it & so are you! Moreover, competition is something that keeps me going and it sometimes pushes me to go outside the envelope …
“I’ve been up against competition all my life. I wouldn’t know how to get along without it” -Walter Disney
