āI hear every little thing from your dumb little earpiece.Ā I know I was gone a while but youāre supposed to be smart, Nick, that was,ā he pauses, kicking up his feet, āliterally your pitch. Youāre lucky Iām feeling really sore. Ten seconds.ā
āSir,ā Nicoās assistant says slowly, fidgeting with the papers in hand.Ā āItās a visual sensor.ā
Thereās a pause. On the screen behind Jackās head, Nicoās eyes slowly close. Jackās feet drop to the floor.
āI can assure you that - ā Nico begins.
āHold that thought, kiddo,ā Jack interrupts, ripping the pages from Nicoās assistant. The assistant stumbles a step away, lifting his hands - Jack is either unperturbed by his fear, or he digs it enough to let him live a little longer.Ā āQuestion, Mister Bon-Bitchy,ā he lifts the pages as if to show the man on-screen, remembers something important about the man on-screen, and sets them on his desk.Ā āSo you sent me - hey, heey. What did I say about staring? Eugh. - a hand-written report. Why.ā
Nico looks down and files his nails. He considers his flaunted blindness as a luxury, one that allows him to multitask and not fake eye contact. His earpiece, after all, alerts him to Jackās sudden movement toward the only other shape in the room with something a little weighty in his hand, rectangular and metal.Ā
When it collides with the assistantās face, it spits out a staple.Ā
It happens so fast that itās not until after Jackās begun beating the assistantās face in, staples and blood spewing, that the earpiece registers the object as a stapler.
āMy connection from Pandora is shaky at best,ā Nico explains amidst the chk-chking and stifled wailing,Ā āand most of these bastards are illiterate.ā Crnch.Ā āOhĀ geez.ā
āI think that was his nose, ha ha, I dunno. Donāt get squeamish on me now, brighteyes!ā He bounces upright, planting one foot on the gurgling assistantās bloodied face. āSo, yeah, I get that. Theyād rather eat a piece of paper than read it. Whatās thisĀ āshaky connectionā bullcrap?ā
Nicoās lip curls.Ā āRats on the wires.ā
āWe talking literally or figuratively?ā
āā¦Both.ā
āRight. Iāll send down an exterminator, but itās coming out of your paycheck. So this is everything I asked for? Aw, itās even in cursive.ā He flips through the pages.Ā āI frickināĀ hate cursive.ā
Folding his arms, Nico leans forward.Ā āIām gonna be a lilā bold and say I went above and beyond what ya asked for, sir. I got eyes on all ofĀ āem and it didnāt even take me a year. Weāre more than ready to- ā
āTsk-tsk-tsk,ā Jack doesnāt look up, skimming a page.Ā āIf I can be patient through a coma, you can be patient, too. My revenge, not yours, okay? Okay. Good energy, though. Knew I kept you around for some reason. Alright.ā he claps his hands.Ā āGood. This is good. Later, loser,ā he says, and ends the transmission.
