My three brothers were almost martyred. They were with us just a few minutes earlier and left in search of food. Then a deafening sound came from the street and I rushed to the window to see what happened. I saw all three of them lying motionless among the martyrs. I screamed for my mom, thinking they were dead, and we rushed to the site.
I swear I was convinced they were dead until we reached them. My younger brother, who was closest to the center of the massacre, was awake and mostly unharmed, saved only by a tree standing between him and the impact, but silent and frozen in shock. My older brothers were lying next to each other, injured. My parents rushed them to the tent that serves as a hospital.
They were both hit by the same piece of shrapnel. It went right through the younger’s hand and lodged itself inside the eldest’s hand, right against the bone. It was the first time I’ve ever seen him cry from pain. We spent what was left of our money to buy as many painkillers and antibiotics as we could, but it barely relieves them.
Our eldest brother needs surgery to remove the shrapnel from his hand, but the last surgeon was killed yesterday. My younger brother has a hurt knee due to a stone that fell on him and he’s still in shock, he hasn’t said a word since yesterday. All three of them are in pain and we’re powerless. Our youngest sister has never been so afraid. The whole family is shaken to the core, we truly believed we had lost all three of them at once.
It’s not the first time I’ve asked for help but we need you more than ever. They need medicine, they need food, and we will need money to pay for the surgery that can only happen when the war is over.
