Gonna get those beauties laced within the next couple of days and then the waiting starts for another member of the myth club. An order for a pair of Bontrager Chupacabra tires has been placed, let’s see how long it takes them to cross the Big Pond.

I know it’s been a while since my last post here, so I decided to bring up something new to this blog which had been kind of dominated by the chubby wheels: Skinny wheels!

This is my vintage road bike which I got from one of my dad’s best friends and which he got custom built in Italy around 1986: A Basso AS Special.

It features some parts from the first Dura Ace groupset, Campagnolo dropouts, a genuine Turbo Special seat and, most important, a nice tubeset.

The ride is still awesome, silent, fast, comfortable despite or - more probably - because of the older geometry.

Love it and that love will be never torn apart.

The idea to make this trip had been growing since me and a couple of friends did a bivouac in the Karwendel area around the Sylvenstein dam before this year’s Easter Holidays. Though we had planned to continue to ride to the origin of the river Isar, we did not get very far because the weather changed to the bad and we decided that it was better to return to Lenggries (the nearest village with a railroad station). Since then, I kind of waited for the conditions which I thought would be best to explore the river bed. The great thing about this area is that the water of the Isar is very shallow there (at some points it barely is as high as one’s ankle) and with a Fat Bike you can do some refreshing gravel bank hopping. Considering the very high temperatures (over 30°C), it was the perfect time for finally doing that trip. I asked a friend of mine to join me, but he wasn’t available…so I decided to go alone and to check out how far one can go upstream riding in the bed of the river.

The riding was just great, it’s Fatbiker’s heaven somehow: Sand, roundish rocks, river gravel in various sizes…you name it, you ride it. Another amazing thing about this area is the fact that there are actually two river beds available to ride in: The young Isar and a part of the Rissbach which has dried out almost completely. I did some riding in that river bed too and it was a great way to approach the Karwendel mountains.

Then I decided to return to the Isar since I needed to refill my water and it was time to find a nice place to prepare dinner and to set up the tent.

This time I took the inner tent only with me and it was such a great decision: I woke up in the middle of the night and through the mesh I could see the many, many stars and the milky way. With the water rushing nearby that was one moment of total peace which gave me chills.

The next day I woke up early (around 6 a.m.) and watched the sun rising behind the mountains. Everything was glowing red and about one hour later the sun was over the mountains and dried my tent from dew in a hurry.

I had some cookies for breakfast, packed the bike and returned to the car.

The whole trip was kind of „the art of going slow“. I barely rode 30 km but with an average of roughly 6 km/h it still was some time spent in the saddle. Of course I also left the bike a couple of times to splash around in the cold, but not ice cold, crystal clear water.

At last, one funny thing: What’s great about Fat Bikes? They float. What’s bad about Fat Bikes? They float. What does that mean? It’s great to float over gravel, stones, sand etc. But when you try to cross a river at a point where the water is up to one’s knees (sometime it’s rideable, sometimes it’s not, depending on the ground) pushing-wise, the bike just starts to float. The tires loose the contact to the ground because of too much floatation and so pushing becomes pulling. That experience might be very useful for similar trips in the (hopefully very near) future.
