Durex - Love Same Sex By Luke Lucas
Je vis la nuit car elle porte conseil by Rémy Boiré
Fight Against the Uglines by Aurelie Maron
After I submitted the YCN boards I went back to doing my hands brief, and realised that I was completely stuck for ideas, so I sat down and spoke to Tash and she suggested that I do a new brief focused on hand made elements, as this was my strongest area, so I did a brainstorm for my new brief entitled 'SHOW ME YOUR CRAFT'.
FINAL POSTERS AND PRESENTATION BOARDS FOR YCN -
My presentation boards for hand in for YCN. I think these work quite well, but I am gutted that I didn't get to do more for it.
GRAB A FRIEND AND HAVE A BALL-
Again bringing it back to the 'pun' aspect that I started with, I used this portrait image as I thought that it could work best with some really bold type, and be read much more easily too. I played around with the type and pacing, and I think this last one works best as it's bold yet seems hand drawn so it's much more friendly and inviting, whilst being quite subtle and not too 'shouty'. I actually think this is the favourite one of my posters so far, as I feel that the type works best in this one and makes better use of the negative space in the photo too. I'm really happy with this one, as I think it works, and there's a good balance of type and imagery too; which catches the eye very well.
BOUNCE ALONG TO A COURT-
As I've said before, my least favourite piece of copy, but the photography works quite well in spite of this. As far as the fonts go, I wanted to utilise a font that has a relaxed feeling but one that also suggested the bouncing motion that I wanted this to suggest - like the ball has just bounced and been caught like this. I chose this last font as I feel that out of all of the ones I tried this one fit the needs best: it's bold and feminine yet relaxed and suggests that the type is in motion.
GRAB SOME 'YOU' TIME -
Aimed at encouraging women to find time for themselves to play tennis, I wanted this poster to have a much more relaxed feel, so I went for the photo with the ball that looks like it's just lying in the sun, all chilled out ^^ I played around with some type until I found one that I was happy with. I think this last one works best as it is a much more personalised and relaxed font which makes it seem more friendly and relatable, so the women viewing it would be more likely to take note and take action.
GRAB A PAIR AND LETS BOUNCE -
Based on my original type sketch ideas for the layout of the type, I had a bit of a play until I felt that the type worked best alongside the imagery. I'm not that fond of this now but after playing with the type for hours I kind of hit a wall. I think that this mix of type works best though as it links in with the fonts of both balls, and the white type is a nice contrast to the bold colours of the photography. I added in the logo and the strapline of 'Rediscover Tennis' as after some thinking I came back to the idea that this was the main point of the campaign - they want women to begin playing tennis again.
-BOUNCE ALONG TO A COURT TODAY -
My least favourite bit of copy, but as this was to do with courts I decided to shoot it on gravel and stone to give it more of a feeling of being on a tennis court. As with the others, I played about here a bit with the position and angle of the ball, and the angle of the photo as well. I think that this actually turned out quite well, especially on the more red coloured brick, as it really brings out the colour of the type. Just need to start playing with adding type to make my posters.
I decided to shoot the two together to play around with the layout a bit more, and to have more images ready to work with if the others don't work out. I quite like the way these sit together, especially in the last photos, as it's literally sitting on the grass, and so, again, really emphasises the feeling of being outdoors. I do like these, but I'll have to see if I use them or not.
-GRAB A FRIEND AND HAVE A BALL-
As with the others, I played about here some with the angle of the ball and the shoot, and with if I wanted it to be portrait or landscape, I think portrait would work best with this one as the type could sit really well underneath the ball. I've chosen this last photo to work with as I think the lighting really brings out the colour and type, and as with the others it really emphasises the feeling of going outdoors. I think the type works best head on here too as it's much more legible at a glance, and so is talking directly to the viewer. Happy with this one!
GRAB SOME 'YOU' TIME -
I wanted this poster to be landscape in order for it to seem more relaxed, and to have the type flowing from the tennis ball. As with the other shoot, I played around with the angle and lighting until I was happy. I think this works as it is literally sitting on the grass which emphasises the tactile quality of the image, as does the slight focus on the graph at the forefront of the photo. I think the lighting here also works really well as it's like the sun is shining on you grabbing some you time - it approves ^^ Again the clarity of the type really helps it to be bold - it stands out, and the colours on the whole really grab the attention too. Definitely using this one!
GRAB A PAIR AND LETS BOUNCE....
For the photography for this I played about with a few different angles, lighting and position of both the hand and the balls until I shot this last one, which I'm really pleased with. It's bold, bright and shows the type clearly, whilst having the lovely green grass background, but being out of focus this doesn't draw attention from the type and imagery here. Really pleased with this one, think this could work really well with the right type.
PHOTOGRAPHY FOR MY POSTERS-
I decided that natural day light would be the best kind of lighting to shoot my photos with, especially as then I could shoot over grass to give it a real outdoors-y feel, and emphasise the idea of going outside to play tennis. I also shot a few photos of grass on its own just in case I decide the photography doesn't turn out well so I want to photoshop them onto this background.
The three main obstacles I wanted to target in posters alongside the 'grab a pair' poster were: finding a court, finding the time, and finding someone to play with. After playing about with some ideas I developed the copy for the other three posters to try and maintain the relaxed feel, and the humour aspect for at least one other and to promote the fact that this is for you to enjoy. So my four posters will read:
-Grab a pair and lets bounce.
-Grab some 'you' time.
-Bounce along to a court today. (Not the best one but I got a bit stuck with this one!)
-Grab a friend and have a ball. (to keep the puns rolling...)
I'm going to play with the photography for each, to try and develop some interesting and different layouts for each poster.
