She could hear the sound of the gunshot and the searing pain in her back. She could also hear the sound of Jack screaming her name. Everything else was fuzzy as the world blurred around her. “Get Langdon!” Robby called. She felt herself get picked off the floor, and could hear the sound of her husband talking to her but her brain couldn’t process the words. All she heard was the sound of chaos, all she kept thinking about was the baby, she wanted them to save the baby, but she knew it was impossible. “I love you Y/N!” Jack screamed as she fell into darkness.
Y/N woke up with a start. It had been a while since she had a nightmare about the shooting, but everytime she did it was just the same, reliving everything or everything she could remember. She went to take a breath but found her breathing very labored. It felt like something was crushing her chest. Not in a familiar way she was used to an anxiety attack. The minute the sound of her wheezing breath echoed through their bedroom, Jack was instantly awake.
“What’s wrong?” He asked his eyes panicky , scanning her.
Y/N opened her mouth to speak but she just made another wheezing sound.
“Y/N.” He said and he quickly reached over, turning his bedside lamp on before he was back at Y/N’s side grabbing her face in his hands. “Talk to me.”
She shook her head, tears starting to well up in her eyes another wheezing breath.
“Ok we are going to the hospital.” Jack grabbed his crutches from by the bed making his way towards his prosthetic.
The minute he reached the bench at the end of the bed, Y/N took a large breath finally able to breathe, the pressure vanishing.
“I’m ok.” She quickly said wanting to calm her husband down.
“You are not ok, Y/N.” Jack snapped as he put his prosthetic on.
“Jack, look at me.” She said and he turned back to look at her his eyes wide with fear. “I’m ok, I can breathe again.”
He sighed as he slowly got up and walked over to her side of the bed.
“I think your kids just thought it would be funny if they crushed their mothers lungs for a second to freak out their dad.” She tried to sooth as she reached out and took his hands in hers.
“How come when they are acting up they are my kids.” He smiled but he adjusted his grip on one of her hands so he could take her pulse. “Your pulse is still too fast.” He grumbled.
“Come lie back down with me. That will help me calm down.”
“I still think we should go to the hospital.”
“Jack, I promise I’m ok, if it happens again we can go. But right now I just want to fall asleep in my husband's arms.” She pleaded.
“Can I promise you to tell me when you start feeling the pressure in your lungs again. Before it gets out of hand?”
“Jack,” Y/N sighed.
He grabbed her face in his hands as he tilted her head up so she was looking at him.
“Y/N, please. I am scared shitless right now. I am terrified of something happening to you or the babies. Please just take it easy and talk to me if anything feels off ok?”
Y/N leaned into her husband's hand, she could feel them shaking slightly.
“I promise.” She said and he quickly leaned down and kissed her forehead. “Now get back in bed Jack, you and I both have work in a few hours.”
It felt like mere minutes before the alarm went off. Jack still held onto Y/N tightly, his hand protectively on her extended stomach. He couldn’t help but smile as he felt the small flutters under his hand as the babies moved.
“Ugh, they are going to be just like their dad, early risers. They have been tap dancing on my bladder for an hour.” Y/N sighed sleepy as she turned to face Jack.
“Don’t look at me, I slept all the way until the alarm this time.” Jack chuckled as he kissed Y/N.
“I’m going to need your help to get up again.” Y/N laughed.
Jack chuckled as he kissed her again before he got up and put on his prosthetic before he reached over and helped Y/N off the bed.
“I am so ready for these babies to be out of me, I’m ready to not feel like a beach ball anymore.”
“But you are a hot beach ball.” Jack said as he kissed her neck.
“Jack!” She laughed as she pushed him away. “Hurry up and get dressed so you can help me get dressed.”
It wasn’t long before they were back in the Pitt ready for another night shift together.
As they got onto the elevator heading to the Pitt, Jack turned to Y/N.
“Remember, if anything feels wrong, you tell me immediately.”
“Yes, I promise Dr. Abbot, you will be the first to know.” Y/N smiled as she kissed him.
The minute the elevator doors opened, the chaos began. Just another day in the Pitt.
It felt like a blur, it wasn’t until around 3am that it finally felt like there was time for a break. Y/N made her way towards the staff kitchen to grab a quick bite. She walked in and found her husband holding her food out for her.
“You are a lifesaver.” She said as she grabbed it and leaned over the counter to eat it.
“Your lower back is still hurting you?”
“Always,” Y/N said as she shoved some leftover pulled pork into her mouth.
Jack didn’t say a word as he made his way over and placed his hands on her lower back, starting to give her a massage.
“Ugh,” Y/N moaned. “I love you so much.”
“Will you hush,” Jack laughed. “Someone is going to think there is something unprofessional happening in here.”
“I think we are well past unprofessional Doctor Abbot. Let’s not forget how we got in this position in the first place.” Y/N smiled.
“There is no way to prove the babies were conceived in the supply closet.” Jack whispered as he smiled mischiviously.
“We have a multiple car pile up on the interstate multiple casualties, and a ton of injuries coming in…” Ellis started as she burst into the break room. “Woah I am interrupting something here.”
“Shut up Parker.” Y/N teased taking one finally bite of her dinner before she quickly set it on the counter. “Let’s go.” She started as Jack followed her back out into the chaos.
And chaos was a good term. The wreck had been the worst that the city had seen in a long time. There was a pile up of 20 cars. 7 people were already declared dead at the scene, and the Pitt saw dozens of victims of all ages. They had already lost 2 patients and Y/N had been working on a toddler that had been ejected for almost 4 hours. About 3 hours into working on the little girl Y/N started to struggle to breath, but she couldn’t step away.
“How is she looking?” Abbot said as he came in, his eyes darting over the little girl’s broken body as well as monitors looking at her vitals.
Y/N started to reach out for her husband, her breathing raspy, as she opened her mouth to speak, when Robby suddenly came in.
“Where do you need me?” He quickly said and Jack ushered him out towards a different patient.
“I think her vitals are stable again Y/N.” Ellis said sighing as she wiped her brow with her forearm. “Are you ok?” She asked looking at the doctor seeing how pale she had become.
“I need Jack.” Y/N wheezed.
“Ok,” She nodded as she grabbed Y/N’s hand and started to usher her out into the hall.
“Abbot!” Ellis screamed and Y/N’s vision started to tunnel.
Jack turned around just as Y/N’s eyed rolled back in her head.
“I need help here!” Ellis screamed as she caught Y/N as she passed out.
“Y/N!” Jack screamed as both he and Robby rushed to her side. “She’s going to need Oxygen.” He scooped her up with the help of Robby. “Gurney!” He screamed and Mateo was ready behind them.
“What’s going on Jack?” Robby asked as he quickly placed an oxygen mask on.
“Y/N woke up this morning and was struggling to breath, her OBGYN said there could be complications from the scar tissues on her lungs. I tried to bring her in but she insisted she was fine. Can we get a fetal monitor in here!”
“Jack.” Y/N groaned blinking as she came to consciousness.
“Hi baby.” He breathed a sigh of relief as he placed his hand on the side of her face brushing his thumb gently across her cheek.
“That little girl is she ok?” Y/N panicked as she tried to sit up.
“Baby,” Jack started. “Y/N, lay back down. Ellis is working on her.”
Y/N nodded. “And the babies?”
Just as she said that Robby rolled in the monitor and started strapping it to her stomach.
“Y/N when did you start feeling like you couldn’t breath well.”
“About an hour ago.” Y/N replied meekly
“Y/N” Jack groaned.
“I’m sorry Jack, I know I promised, but that little girl she needed me. She is only 2 years old. I couldn’t let her die.” Y/N said tears welling up in hers eyes as her breathing started to get raspy again.
“It’s ok.” Jack tried to sooth.
“Robby please tell me the babies are ok.” She sobbed her voice barley audible through the rasping.
“Y/N look at me.” Robby said grabbing her hand. “I need you to calm down. You are stressing yourself out and it making it harder for you to breath. This is causing your pulse to skyrocket and you know that’s not good for the babies. What can we do to help you calm down?”
Jack pulled out his phone and started playing a playlist he had made specifically to help with Y/N’s anxiety. The song that filled the room was Bruce Springsteen’s I’m on Fire.
A small chuckle echoed throughout the room.
“The Boss, nice choice.” Robby smiled.
Y/N smiled as she looked over at Jack who leaned forward and kissed her forehead.
“Alright, your stats are starting to look much better. But I would recommend you see your OBGYN. You see Dr. Greene right?”
“Yeah, I’ll see if we can get in today.” Jack sighed. “Thank you Robby.”
“Of course. Now make sure you take care of my niece and nephew.” He smiled.
After finishing out their shift and passing the patients off to day shift. Jack and Y/N made their way up to see Dr. Greene.
“Now I know you are not going to like to hear this,” Dr Greene said as she sat in front of Jack and Y/N having squeezed them in before her first scheduled appointment. “But I think we are going to need to put you on bedrest Y/N.”
“What?” Y/N gasped. “But I’m only 30 weeks. That’s so long to be on bedrest.”
“We always knew this could be a possibility. I think with the babies now getting bigger, they are pushing hard on your lungs, and with the scar tissue, any level of stress is causing too much pressure, your lungs can’t keep up. We need to do whatever we can to keep your stress levels down. And I think bedrest is the best way to do that.”
Jack took Y/N’s hand pulling it to his mouth kissing it. “It’s going to be ok Y/N. We have to do whatever we can to keep you and the babies safe.”
Y/N just nodded her mind still trying to catch up with the idea of being stuck at home for months.
“Cooper is going to be so happy to have you home.” Jack said seeing her mind starting to spiral.
“That’s true.” She smiled.
“Plus you have so much trashy tv you can catch up on.” He laughed.
“Does that mean you will let me watch House Hunters?”
“Not on your life.” He smiled. “I love you. We will figure this out. I promise you.”
This is a submission for @letsgobarbs @ananonymousaffair and @clubsoft A Doctor a Day creative event.
At this years hospital gala, Y/N has gotten herself roped into a charity auction at Gloria’s insistence. But at least she has Dr Abbot, Dr Robby, and Dana by her side.
Word Count: 1805
Y/N sighed as they ran her fingers through her freshly styled hair. She couldn’t believe she had gotten herself roped into this situation. She stood in front of her floor length mirror taking in the entire outfit. She didn’t think she had ever worn something as fancy as the silver floor length dress she currently wore. Not even for prom in high school. But it was her first hospital gala and she needed to impress. Not to mention Gloria had suckered her in for the Date with a Doctor fundraiser. The dress had a sweetheart neck with small straps, the silver glittered in the light, and there was a thigh high slit on her right side.
Her door bell rang and she quickly made her way down, somewhat uncomfortable in the heels she had bought to go with the outfit.
“Holy shit! You clean up nice.” Dana smiled as Y/N answered the door.
“So do you!” Y/N gasped taking in the deep navy blue gown Dana was wearing. “Is it normal to feel nauseous before these things?” Y/N said as she followed Dana out to her vehicle.
“It is when you know that a certain broody nightshift attending will be there.” Dana teased.
“Stop.” Y/N laughed. “You know there is nothing going on with me and Dr. Abbott. He is just my friend and colleague.”
“The flirting I have seen between the two of you at work would suggest otherwise.” Dana smiled as they started to drive them to the Wintergarden.
“It’s not flirting Dana, it’s friendly conversation.” Y/N insisted.
“Very friendly. Did you tell him about the Date with a Doctor thing?”
“It didn’t come up.”
“Oh Jack is going to lose his shit.”
“He will be fine, plus Gloria said most residents end up volunteering for it at least once.”
“Gloria lied honey. I promise you neither Robby or Abbott did the Date with a Doctor.”
Y/N groaned. “This is going to be miserable.”
“It’s just one date, and who knows you may find your Mr. Right, and hell if he wins it means he is probably rich.”
Y/N didn’t reply instead looking out the window. She would never say it outloud, but she had already felt like she had met Mr. Right, but she was convinced he didn’t see her as anything more than a friend.
Jack stood impatiently tapping his foot at the back of the room with Robby. He felt ridiculously standing in his black suit. It was the only suit he owned, and the only time he ever actually wore it was to these ridiculous events. And the only reason he owned it was because Robby had convinced him that he was far too old to keep renting a suit. The floor to ceiling windows always made him nervous, felt like there were far too many entry points or where things could go bad.
“Will you stop that, you are acting like a child.” Robby laughed.
“You know I hate being here, I just want to get it over with.” Jack sighed.
“We all hate being here brother, but at least we get fed. And hey, it’s Y/N’s first shindig, we can’t turn her off of them from the start.”
At the mention of her name, Jack felt his heart leap. He could feel the blood rush to his face as he tried to suppress his smile. He couldn’t wait to see her. Jack had caught her talking with Dana at work about the dress she bought and he had only begun to imagine how stunning she would look in it.
“Will you stop daydreaming about our girl? You are acting like a love sick teenager.” Robby teased.
Jack cleared his throat, straightening up his tie.
“I don’t know what you are talking about.”
“Oh don’t give me that shit. I know you have feelings for Y/N. And you aren’t super subtle about it.”
“We are friends Robby, I know that is a foreign concept to you, but that’s when two people just enjoy one another’s company.” Jack teased back.
“Except friends don’t make goo goo eyes at one another from across the Pitt.” Robby laughed. “And before you try to deny it. I was there that day and I watched Ellis almost have to wave her hand in front of her face to get your attention.”
“Fuck,” Jack said under his breath.
“What I don’t understand is why you haven’t asked her out yet. Everyone knows that she has feelings for you too.”
“What?” Jack asked. “Everyone knows?”
“Good God you both are so oblivious.”
“Who’s oblivious?” A voice asked and both of the men turned to see Y/N and Dana had walked in.
Jack had to fight the urge to let his jaw drop as he saw Y/N. She looked absolutely stunning.
“I… you…” He stumbled over his words.
“You both look amazing.” Robby quickly swooped in, saving Jack from his embarrassment.
“Thank you.” Y/N blushed, her eyes still locked on Jack’s.
“You two don’t look too shabby yourselves. It always is so strange seeing you both out of your scrubs.”
“I would much rather be in scrubs than in this penguin suit.” Jack complained but he still couldn’t take his eyes off of Y/N. “You do look beautiful.” He finally said and Y/N beamed.
Dana and Robby exchanged a look as Jack reached out and kissed Y/N hand.
“Well she better look damn good, Gloria roped her into the Date with a Doctor auction.” Dana said.
“What?” Jack snapped and Y/N glared at Dana, who just smiled mischievously.
“How the fuck did she convince you to join that” Robby barked with laughter.
“She told me both you and Jack had participated.” Y/N said her face red.
“Like fuck we did. I laughed in her face and said I would rather die before participating.” Jack said.
“This is going to be awful.” Y/N groaned.
“There she is.” A voice called and they all turned to see Gloria heading their way.
“Speak of the devil.” Robby said under his breath.
“I have some donors who are very interested in talking with you.” She said as she grabbed Y/N arm and led her away. Y/N looked back at the group, eyes wide with fear.
Jack had started to take a step towards her when Robby threw his hand up and stopped him.
“You do not want to get between Gloria and her money, trust me.” He smiled.
“She parading Y/N like she’s some kind of prized horse.” Jack grumbled.
“You didn’t bat an eye when Gloria did that to me two years in a row.” Dana laughed.
“That’s… I…” Jack stumbled.
“God you have got it so bad for Y/N.” Dana smiled playfully, hitting his arm.
“I do not.” He grumbled again acting almost like a toddler.
“Well let’s get to our seats before we are also roped into doing the donor rounds.” Robby said as he ushered them all towards the table. They were relegated to the back as they had been every year they had come. But Y/N was stuck up at the table with Glori doing her best to keep from looking around for Jack.
She was so uncomfortable trying her best to schmooze with the donors but all she wanted was to be with her people, Robby and Dana who made her feel safe, and Jack, Jack could make her feel like the only girl in the room.
“And now it comes to everyone's favorite program of the evening, the date with a doctor. Let’s get all of our lovely participants up to the stage.” The MC announced.
Y/N quickly looked back in one desperate attempt to find her friends, as she stood up, she finally saw them. Both Robby and Dana were giving her a thumbs up. Jack looked at her his eyes full of rage.
Everything felt like a blur as she stood up on the stage. She tried her best not to look as scared shitless as she felt.
“Dr. Y/N Y/L/N.” The voice called as she walked across the stage. Her eyes quickly looked out at the crowd as she plastered a fake smile on her face.
“Let’s start the bidding out at $500.”
A hand instantly shot up and Jack glared at him.
“Do I hear $750.”
Another hand shot up and again Jack’s attention turned to that person much to the amusement of both Dana and Robby.
“Do I hear $1000.”
“$2500” A voice called and Y/N’s eye went wide as she realized the voice was one she recognized and her eyes locked on Jack who had his hand held up.
“What the fuck are you doing?” Robby hissed the smile gone from his face.
“Winning a date with Y/N.” He said.
“Do I hear 3500?”
“5,000” another voice called and Jack turned to see an older man probably in his 60’s with his hand up.
Jack could see Gloria glaring at him but he didn’t care as he bid for $7500.
“Do I hear 8500?”
“8500” The other guy raised his hand.
“No,” Jack growled as he quickly raised his hand. “$10,000.”
“Do I hear $11,000?” The room was silent. “Going once, going twice, sold to the gentleman the back.”
The room erupted in applause but Y/N just stood dumbstruck on stage her eyes locked with Jack who just smiled at her.
Hon, you can get off the stage now.” A voice whispered to Y/N and she just nodded as she mindlessly started walking towards Jack still fully dazed at what just happened. Gloria was on her feet in an instant as she rushed to Jack.
“What the hell was that?” She snapped.
“Don’t worry about it Gloria, you can just take it out of my paycheck.” He said and Robby laughed behind him. But Jack’s focus was elsewhere. He was trying to find Y/N in the crowd having lost her when she left the stage.
“Are you insane?” A voice said and he turned to see Y/N coming towards him.
“Hey I think I just saved you from a horrible date with that old geezer and I…”
Y/N immediately pulled him in for a kiss.
“I was hoping it’d be you.” She smiled as they broke away. “I was standing up there and all I could think of was how much I wished you would win. But I didn’t expect you to spend $10,000 dollars on a date with me you could have gotten for free.” She teased.
“Darling, you are worth so much more than that.” He smiled as he pulled her in for another long kiss.
A companion story to How to Save a Life. It is time to find out the sex of baby Abbot. But the nerves are high as both Y/N and Jack worry about the baby and if the damage done from the shooting, could still have lingering issues
Trigger Warning: Discussion of pregnancy
Word Count: 1682
“I thought the morning sickness was supposed to stop in the second trimester.” Y/N groaned as she sat in the bathroom, her head leaning against the sink as she doubled over. Jack was behind her with a cool washcloth on the back of her neck as he gently rubbed her back.
“You know every pregnancy is different.” Jack said. But even as he said it, he knew that Y/N had been struggling with the pregnancy. It seemed to be taking a much larger toil on her than he would have thought. He knew the doctor said they needed to be cautious, that with the scarring from the bullet, breathing could become extra difficult with the pressure added to her lungs. This had Jack on high alert terrified of Y/N having complications.
After the shooting he had barely left her side, even when they worked different shifts he checked in often making sure that she didn’t need anything or was having any problems or pains. Y/N found it very adorable if not somewhat annoying.
“Just think, we are going to confirm my hunch today that we are having a girl today.” Jack teased trying to distract Y/N from the nausea.
“I am going to laugh so hard when you are wrong.” Y/N laughed but the laugh quickly turned to a groan as she leaned back over the toilet ready to throw up.
“Do you want me to see if I can get someone to cover your shift tonight?” Jack asked, rubbing her back.
“No, we are already going to be at the hospital for our appointment. I want to work.” Y/N insisted.
“Ok if you need a break though just let me know, I’ll pick up your patients.” He said.
“You will do nothing of the sort. You already have enough on your plate as it is. You do not need me to add to it.”
“Baby, you do not add anything to my plate. I just want to make sure that both my girls are safe.” He smiled as he put his hand on her stomach.
“You are going to be such a good dad, you know that, don't you.” She smiled.
Jack froze as he looked at her his eyes getting glassy.
“You are going to be a great mom.” He said. “I am so excited to have this baby with you.” He smiled as he leaned forward to kiss her but she pushed him back.
“You are not kissing me after I just puked my guts out. That’s disgusting.” She laughed as she stood up brushed her teeth and made her way back to their shared bedroom getting dressed for the day. She had already started showing so she had to go up in her scrub size.
“I feel like I look ridiculously.” Y/N sighed as she stood in front of the mirror. “I look huge, everyone else who is 18 weeks pregnant looks cute, I look like a whale.”
“You do not look like a whale.” Jack laughed as he came up behind her and put his hand on her belly kissing the side of her head. “You look like my beautiful wife who is carrying my beautiful child. And who I think is absolutely sexy as hell.”
Y/N groaned as she leaned into Jack. “You are too good for me, you know that.”
“We both know that is a lie.” Jack said as he turned her so she was facing him. “I love you so much.” Then he pulled her in for a long kiss. “Now let’s go see our baby.” He beamed as he grabbed her hand and they started walking to the car.
The whole drive there, Y/N couldn’t stop her leg from bouncing up and down, she was nervous. Terrified that something could go wrong. She knew Jack was scared enough for the both of them, so she tried to not let him see her fears often.
“Baby?” He asked as he reached over and placed his hand on her thigh to stop it from bouncing. “Are you ok? What’s wrong?”
“Just excited that’s all.”
“Y/N you can’t lie to me, what’s going on?”
“I’m just scared, I’m so worried about something terrible happening with the baby. Things just don’t feel right Jack. I shouldn’t be this uncomfortable all the time right, not yet at least. I’m worried something is wrong.” She said tears filling up her eyes.
“Y/N, how long have you felt like this?” He asked, his eyes filled with worry.
“Since a week after I came home from the hospital.” She said
Jack grabbed her hand.
“What if the gun shot really did cause damage and we don’t know, what if we…”
“Baby, baby, breathe. Ok. We have done so many scans, you have had both Robby and I take a look to double check. Everything is ok with the baby. Remember what the doctors called her. A miracle. Our baby is strong. She’s a fighter just like her mom. Now it is ok to be scared. Hell I’m scared shitless baby. But you can’t spiral. You already have a stressful job, the last thing you need is to be stressed out outside of work. But you have to talk to me about this, ok. You can’t keep this to yourself. Let me help you. Let me talk you down from the ledge.”
“I’m sorry.” Y/N said as she wiped her tears that had fallen down her cheeks.
“Don’t apologize, you have got nothing to apologize for. I promise you, I am going to need to hear a similar pep talk before the baby is born. We just got to talk with each other. Right?”
“Right.” Y/N sighed and squeezed his hand a little tighter.
“Now all you need to think about, is how in about 30 minutes we are going to find out that we are having a girl and that I am correct.”
Y/N laughed. “Jack Abbot you are incorrigible.”
“Yes but you married me Mrs. Abbot.”
“And it was the best decision of my life.”
They didn’t have to wait long, the perks of being a doctor. As Y/N laid down on the table pulling her shirt up slightly Jack instantly grabbed her shaking hand.
“Now are we wanting to know the sex of the baby?” The tech asked as she squirted the gel onto Y/N’s stomach.
“Yes.” Both Y/N and Jack said.
The room went silent before the sound of a heartbeat filled the room and Y/N couldn’t help but sigh a smile appearing on her face, happy that the heartbeat sounded strong.
“Baby is looking good, and that heartbeat is strong.” The tech smiled and Jack leaned forward and kissed the side of Y/N’s head. “And now for the sex I see…” The tech froze and Y/N’s heart stopped.
“What’s wrong?” Jack asked as Y/N gripped his hand tighter.
“Give me one moment.” The tech said and Y/N thought she was going to explode tears welling up in her eyes.
The room was silent again as Jack rubbed his thumb over Y/N’s knuckles trying to calm her down.
“Breathe baby, breathe.” He whispered his own heart pounding in his chest.
Suddenly the tech smiled widely as she turned back to the couple.
“Well you are having a girl.” She said and Y/N gasped, turning to Jack.
“See I told you I was right.” He beamed tears in his eyes as he kissed her.
“And you are having a boy.” The tech said and both Y/N and Jack looked at her eyes wide.
“What?” Y/N asked.
“You are having twins.”
Jack’s head was swirling. Twins. Two babies.
“Woah, dad do you need to sit down?” The tech asked and Y/N looked at Jack and saw the shocked look on his face, his face had completely paled.
“Jack, are you ok?” She asked, squeezing his hand again.
“Twins, we are having twins. A boy and a girl.” He gasped in disbelief causing Y/N to laugh.
“So you were right and you were wrong.” She teased.
“I…” He started his eyes filling with tears. “I love you so much.” He kissed her hard before he leaned down to her stomach. “And I love you too, babies.”
Y/N couldn’t help but beam as she watched her husband talking to their unborn babies. Even though the thought of having two babies absolutely terrified her, she couldn’t wait to meet them, and for their family to be born.
When they walked into the Pitt, they found the whole day shift staff waiting for them.
“So, what are you having?” Robby asked and Y/N couldn’t help but let out a loud laugh when she saw the board of people placing bets on what the sex of their baby would be.
“You all made bets on my kid?” Jack said pretending to be mad.
“Listen it was a slow day, we needed something to keep us going.” Dana smiled.
“Come on, tell us!” Langdon smiled.
Jack and Y/N looked at each other before they spoke again.
“We are having a girl.” Jack smiled and half of the Pitt crew cheered.
“And we are having a boy.” Y/N interrupted and everyone went silent.
“I told you!” A voice called and Y/N turned to see Collins coming up to her.
“You knew?” Jack asked.
“I had my suspicions,” Heather laughed as she hugged Y/N. “Alright, you all owe me money.”
The crew groaned as they started to hand Collins money.
“Congratulations brother.” Robby said as he came up and hugged Jack.
“Thank you.”
“You know what this means, you can now name your kid Michael.”
Jack let out a loud laugh as he took in the scene before him. Dana was hugging Y/N tightly and the whole Pitt crew was surrounding them. He couldn’t wait for the babies to be born so he could introduce them all to their Pitt family.

TRIGGER WARNING: Discussion of firearms, women being threatened.
I altered the show's timeline slightly to make my story work. I will continue to post parts, if you would like to be included in the tag list, comment down below.
It was a normal shift, or as normal as any shift in the Pitt could be. After a heartbreaking case, Y/N heads outside to clear her head and talk to her husband Dr. Jack Abbott. But suddenly a normal shift takes a deadly turn when Y/N is taken hostage by a disgruntled patient
“Resuscitation efforts discontinued at 14:51,” Robby said and she felt like see had been been punched in chest. Kid loses always hit everyone hard. Especially a drowning. Y/N’s eyes locked with Robby’s as the mother of the lost girl screamed with grief. She just shook her head as she bolted from the room, not wanting anyone to see her tears. She always felt like so weak when she lost it after losing a patient. She had been a doctor for 10 years, it should affect her as much anymore. But the hard cases always got to her.
“Caring does not make you weak,” She could hear her husbands voice in her head say as she reached for the necklace he gave her. “It makes you a better doctor.”
She stumbled out to the ambulance bay, taking a deep breath. The cool air filled her lungs and she felt like she could breathe. She wiped some tears away as she pulled out her phone, pulling up Jack’s contact. She knew he would be waking up soon if he wasn’t already. They had a tradition of texting one another if something happened at work that upset them. Sometimes it was easier for Jack to write down his feelings than it was to speak them out loud. Y/N appreciated him sharing in whatever form made him feel the most comfortable. And Y/N always knew the best things to say to make him feel better.
“Just had a really rough case. Lost them. Just wanted to remind you that I love you more than anything in this world, and you make me incredibly happy.”
“You have time for a call Doctor?” A text shot back and Y/N smiled as she hit call.
“What are you doing up?” She laughed.
“Ugh, you know I can’t sleep without you next to me.” Jack said groggily. “What’s going on Doll.”
“It was a six year old kid, Jack. Drowned.” Y/N said her emotions coming to the surface again. “She was trying to save her little sister.”
Jack remained silent just listening as Y/N explained everything they tried to do to save the girl. “Oh darling, I’m so sorry”
“I just kept thinking, what if it was our baby lying on that table.” Her hand instinctively hovered over her stomach. Neither of them had told anyone yet, but Y/N was about 8 weeks pregnant.
“Y/N, you can’t think like that. If you connect every lost kid to our baby, you are going to go insane.”
“I know. It’s just hard.” Y/N sighed.
“Well, just think, in a few more hours, you will be home with me, I will make us dinner, and then we can do whatever you want to take your mind off the day.”
“Oh anything I want Doctor Abbott that sounds like you have something dirty in mind.” Suddenly Y/N felt something heavy and blunt against the base of her skull.
In one ear she could hear Jack talking about all the things he wanted to do with her. In the other ear, she heard someone whisper.
“Hang up the fucking phone. Now.”
“Jack, honey, I have to go. I love you so fucking much.” She said and she quickly hung up, just as she heard Jack call her name questioningly.
As soon as the phone was hung up and put in her pocket, Y/N felt an arm wrap around her chest pulled her roughly back as the barrel of a gun was placed against her temple.
“Inside. Now.” The voice snapped as he started to drag her inside.
Her mind was a blur as they came in through ambulance bay doors. She immediately saw the look of horror on everyones face as they came in.
“Listen here!” The voice screamed. “I want to be treated fairly, I want to be seen by a doctor!”
Y/N saw Robby come into main area and his eye went wide.
“I need everyone to calm down.” Robby said with as much composer as he could, but in his head he was full on panicked. “Sir, I need you to let my resident go.”
“No. Not until I am fucking seen. I have been waiting for hours and no one has seen me yet. It’s not fair. So I am going to get someone to help me, or so help me God I won’t hesitate to shoot her.”
Ahmad took a step forward but the minute he did, the man cocked the gun and Y/N flinched.
“Don’t you fucking move, you piece of shit, I’m not joking I will kill her. I need you all to take me seriously!”
“Mr. Driscoll, we are taking you very seriously…” Robby said hands up his eyes looking over at Y/N’s scared form, trying to figure out some way to get her out of this.
“Well then who is going to treat me!” Doug screamed as he swung the gun out at the rest of the group causing everyone to duck for cover.
“I will!” Y/N screamed. “I will treat you! Just don’t point the gun at anyone else, just at me got it.” She negotiated and she could feel her phone buzzing in her pocket. Jack. Her heart broke, she hoped that by seeing this patient she could deescilate the situation. But she also knew that if he was going to these extremes, there was a higher than likely chance this could end in violence.
“Y/N.” Robby said shaking his head.
“Listen Mr. Driscoll. I have been a doctor for 10 years. I am confident that I can get you the care you deserve.”
“Finally, that’s all I’m asking. Was that so fucking hard!” Driscoll screamed. “Now,” He said as he started to drag her toward the empty room he could see. “If I so much as see a cop, things won’t end well for…” He leaned over to read her badge. “Dr. Abbott here. Is that clear?”
“Mr. Driscoll, this is…” Robby started again but Driscoll quickly moved the gun to under Y/N’s chin shoving her face up so she was looking at the ceiling.
“I said is that fucking clear!” He screamed and Y/N could feel a tear roll down her cheek.
“Crystal.” Robby snapped a look of pure rage in his eyes.
Everyone watched in silence as Doug Driscoll dragged Y/N into one of the exam rooms and shut both doors.
“Robby.” Dana said panicked.
“We need to start moving all the other patients elsewhere for their safety. Also we need to…” He started but he could feel his phone vibrating in his pocket.
He pulled it out to see he had multiple missed texts and calls from Jack.
“What’s going on with Y/N. She sounded weird when she hung up the phone.”
“Robby, I’m worried about Y/N.”
“Can you just let me know if she is tied up right now. She’s not answering me and I just want to make sure she is ok.”
Robby sighed. He didn’t want to make this phone call, and he knew what the outcome would be, but he knew Jack deserved to know.
“Is that Jack?” Dana asked.
“Yeah.”
“You want me to call him.”
“No, I got this, go try to calm down the newbies. And let’s get everyone moving.” He sighed as he pulled out his phone, his eyes still fixed on the room Y/N was in.
“Robby, brother, thanks for calling, Y/N sounded really weird on the phone and I swear to God I heard another voice in the background I know it’s probably silly, but I got this gut feeling…” Abbott started.
“Jack.” Robby cut him off and Jack instantly went silent.
“What’s wrong?” Jack said fear filling him instantly.
“There has been an incidence. A disgruntled patient and he…” Robby hesitated.
“Is she ok?” Jack asked and Robby could hear the sound of rustling as he was sure Jack was starting to rush out the door.
“She’s ok, but the patient brought in a gun. He currently is holding her hostage in one of the exam rooms.”
“Fuck!” Jack screamed and Robby heard the sound of Jack’s truck peeling out of the driveway.
“Jack if you are coming here I need you to remain calm and level headed ok. That’s the only way we are going to get Y/N out ok.”
“I’m not going to remain calm! He’s got my girl Robby. And she…” Jack hesitated his voice catching in his throat. “Have you called the cops?”
“Not yet, I need to get all the other patients somewhere safe, and I need to talk to Gloria. And he threatened to kill Y/N if he saw any cops.”
“I’m on my way, please don’t call the cops until I get there. I’m only about 5 minutes out.”
“Jack you live 15 minutes away how the fuck are you already…”
“I really don’t give a shit about speed limits right now.” Jack screamed before he let out a loud sigh. “Micheal, I can’t lose her.”
“Don’t think like that ok, we are no where near that point. This guy is just pissed off but I think once he gets what he needs I think he will be gone.” Robby tried to reassure.
“She’s pregnant, we haven’t told anyone yet because it is still super early.” Jack said and Robby could hear him breaking.
“Jack, I am going to do everything in my power to make sure she is safe.” Micheal insisted. But he couldn’t help but feel that this situation was not going to end well.

Y/N sat waiting for Robby to come home. She knew that his shift had been hell. Dana had called her once the shift was done to fill her in on everything. The patient loses, the shooting, and Robby’s rumored breakdown. Everything Dana said just caused Y/N’s heart to break. Of all the days to have a terrible shift, Y/N knew that the anniversary of Adamson’s death would be the worst one for Robby.
She knew that Robby’s mental health had been tanking for months. He came home more exhausted than usual and he kept her at arms length. He would become short with her if she tried to get him to talk to her. It felt as though she was slowly losing him. They fought more in the past few weeks then they had in their entire 7 year relationship. And Y/N was starting to reach the end of her rope.
Y/N loved Robby more than she could ever possibly imagine. He was her best friend. She could spend every moment of every day just being in his presence. Robby made her laugh harder than anyone she had ever met, and he could silence her inner demons just with the touch of his hand on her cheek. And all she wanted to do was bring him the same kind of comfort.
Darling we might not ever look like those families
In the stock picture frames or on old time TV
There ain't no white fence around this life we have
We're two runaways on a one way ticket track
Robby however, had started picking fights about topics that Y/N had thought they were on the same page about. The other day she had been showing him photos of Landgon’s son dressed up for Halloween and he totally lost his shit on her.
“You should have seen it, he was sprinting around the apartment pretending he was really a superhero.” Y/N laughed as she pulled up her phone to show Robby the pictures.
“That’s nice.” Robby snapped as he just kept staring at his book.
Y/N was taken aback.
“Ok what’s your deal you old grump.” She said teasingly.
“I just really don’t give a shit about Langdon’s kids halloween costume, I just want to read my fucking book.” He screamed.
“Wow, ok you clearly need some alone time. Come find me when you can act like an adult again.” Y/N snapped back as she went to get off the couch.
Robby sighed as he reached out to grab her hand.
“I’m sorry.” He said as he put his book down on the side table.
“What’s your deal, you love Tanner?” She said as she sat back down next to him.
“I know I do I just…” Robby sighed again and she knew he was contemplating just shutting her out again. “I just worry that you wish you had kids.”
“What?” She gasped.
“I see the way you interact with Tanner, or how you look when you see babies in strollers when we are walking in the park. And I just worry the life we built isn’t at all what you had hoped for. I’m worried you are losing out on having a family by staying with me.” Robby said but the way he said it, it wasn’t sad, it was more matter of fact.
Y/N felt confused and angry. This wasn’t the first time they had had this conversation, but it felt like it was something Robby kept bringing up more and more recently. Also as if he was trying to get her to leave.
“Where is this coming from? You know I don’t care about having kids. Do I love them yes, do I love that I don’t have to take care of them, absolutely. And don’t you dare say we aren’t a family. We are a family, and I love are little family. I don’t want a fucking stock photo family Michael. I want you. I have always only wanted you.”
Robby just sighed sadly.
“I just don’t want you to regret…”
“Stop.” Y/N snapped. “Baby, I don’t regret my life with you. But why do I feel like you are trying to push me away. Why does this feel like you want to start a fight?”
“I don’t want to start a fight I just…” Robby sighed frustrated. “Never mind. I’m going to bed.”
He stormed off leaving Y/N baffled in their living room.
**************************************
“Robby is really going to need your comfort tonight.” Jack had texted. “It’s been really bad.”
Y/N felt her tears start to run down her cheeks. Her heart broke for Robby. He deserved the world. He had been the first man in her life that actually made her believe that men could be kind.
I see the scars you keep underneath your skin
Drawn in like a map of all the places your heart's been
Y/N had had a rough life growing up. Her dad had left when she was 13 and it sent her into a really dark spiral. She began seeking out that love in men that would use her and then desert her. As she grew up, those relationships stayed the same. Nothing changed but she kept seeking out that love she thought she deserved. So when Robby showed up in her life, it felt like a miraculous breath of fresh air.
They had met out hiking.
Robby had taken advantage of his weekend off to head up to the cabin.
Y/N had run away from yet another bad ex. This one had gotten physical with her.
She thought if she could get some air, real not city smog air, she might be able to clear her head. It was just her luck that as she was hiking all by herself she happened to step wrong off the path and hear a loud crack as she felt fire shooting up her leg. She hit the dirt before she could catch herself and let out a loud yelp.
“Fuck,” She breathed as she looked away from her foot not able to stand the sight of it being bent at the wrong angle.
“Are you ok?” She heard a voice call and she turned to see an attractive man jogging towards her. He had short brown hair with a brown beard that had flecks of grey in it. He was wearing a black t-shirt and some dark brown cargo pants. He had a grungy blue jacket on.
Y/N could feel her face turning a bright shade red as she felt so embarrassed. The trail she was on was flat, it wasn’t like she fell down the side of a mountain.
“Uh, yeah i am fine.” Y/N lied.
“Yeah, no you are not ok, that ankle is definitely broken.” The man said as he leaned over looking at her ankle.
“What are you a doctor?” She laughed sarcastically.
“Actually, yes I am.” He smiled. “I’m Doctor Michael Robinavitch. My friends call me Robby.”
Y/N blushed again. “Oh.”
“Do you have your phone on you? I left mine in my cabin.” Robby asked her.
“Shit, no I left mine at my…” She thought about it and she realized she had fully left her phone back at Matt’s place. Matt was Y/N’s abusive ex.
“That’s ok, my car is just right around the corner, I can drive you to the hospital.” Robby said as he reached out to help her up. “Don’t put any pressure on your foot.”
She hesitated for a moment before she grabbed onto his hands and let him pull her to her feet.
“What kind of doctor are you?” Y/N asked trying to make small talk as he helped her limp towards his car.
“I work in emergency medicine.” He said.
“Oh well it's just my lucky day then, a hot ER doctor stumbled upon me in my hour of need.” She joked and she watched as it was Robby’s turn to blush.
“Did you come out here with anyone? Or were you out here by yourself?” Robby quickly changed the subject
“By myself, needed to get away somewhere I could clear my head.” Y/N sighed and she was surprised that Robby hadn’t brought up her black eye. “What about you?
“Uh by myself, for similar reasons I guess.”
They had almost reached the car when it started pouring.
“Shit,” Robby said. “Can I just carry you?” He said and Y/N looked at him eyes wide.
“What?”
“It will be easier especially now that it’s raining.” He said.
“Uh, yeah sure.” She said and instantly Robby scooped her up and go them to his car.
Quickly he loaded her into the car before hopping in himself. The rain had gotten even worse and visibility was horrible.
“I don’t think it would be a good idea to drive the 30 minutes to the hospital in this weather. My cabin is only a few minutes away. I can splint your foot and make sure you have ice and ibuprofen.”
“Damn, you don’t have any of the harder drugs.” Y/N teased.
Robby chuckled.
“I’ll go to your cabin but only if you promise that you aren’t a serial killer.” Y/N continued.
“I promise I’m not, though I’m sure if I was I still would promise you I wasn’t.” He laughed as he started down the road to his cabin.
That was just the beginning of the relationship between Y/N and Robby. They spent the whole night talking. What she loved was that he didn’t ask her about the black eye. She could see him clock it throughout all of their discussions but he never asked. And she knew he knew. But he didn’t need to ask, he just talked about her, about her life, her likes dislikes, everything about her.
The next morning when he drove her to the hospital, he asked her out for coffee.
Y/N stared at the door waiting for Robby to come through, she couldn’t sit any longer and was pacing around the apartment. Her eyes darted back to their bedroom where her suitcase sat open and waiting to be filled. The night before Y/N had a massive fight. And had ended in a way that left Y/N teetering on the edge of whether to leave or stay.
The man I am ain’t nothing but holes in a tattered soul
Threads of grace hemmed with faith
They’re strongest stitches sewn
It had started with Y/N coming home from errands finding Robby packing his backpack for the next day.
“What are you doing?” She asked as she dropped the groceries on the counter.
“Getting ready for work tomorrow.” He said not even bothering to look up at her.
“Robby you don’t work tomorrow, today was your last day for the weekend.” She laughed thinking that his old man brian was catching up with him.
“No, I picked up a shift for tomorrow. I’m going in to help out.” He sighed as he walked over and started helping her put the groceries in the fridge.
“Michael.” Y/N snapped. “You never work on the anniversary, what are you doing?”
“They need help. I’m going to help.” He repeated doing his best to not make eye contact with her.
Y/N sighed her heart breaking. She was at her breaking point with Robby.
“I can’t keep doing this Michael.” She sighed her eyes filling with tears.
“What are you talking about?” He asked as he started towards the living room.
“Will you fucking look at me!” She screamed and Robby whipped around eyes full of anger.
“Jesus, Y/N I don’t want to do this.” He snapped.
“What talk, that’s all I want to do is talk. We haven’t talked in ages.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, we talk every day.”
“No we don’t, we don’t have meaningful conversations like we used to. You won’t let me in. I know you are struggling. I know that work is starting to take a massive toll on you. I know you just keep thinking about Adamson and blaming yourself. And I have tried to get you to talk to me or talk to someone, but you won’t listen. I feel like you have just been going through the motions of our relationship. And I’m tired Michael. I’m tired of talking at you and hoping you are listening.”
Robby sighed. “I don’t want to talk because we have nothing to talk about Y/N. All you want to do is nag me about talking about my feelings and I’m tired of it. If I had anything I needed to talk to you about I would. I don’t know how many times I have to tell you I’m fine. But I’m fucking fine.”
“If you really think that Michael than I think you are lying to yourself. You have changed, you snap at everyone, you are more exhausted than I have ever seen you. And the Michael I know wouldn’t stand there watching me cry and not do anything.”
“Well maybe I’m not the Michael you know anymore.” He snapped and Y/N sobbed. “If you want to leave then do it, but I can’t keep having this conversation Y/N.” He said as he gathered up his jacket. “I’m going on a walk.”
The door slammed behind him and Y/N broke down sobbing as she collapsed to the floor.
By the time Robby got back, Y/N was already in bed pretending to sleep. He came in silently and as he climbed into bed with her, he gave her a soft kiss on the forehead before turning his back towards her and falling asleep.
When she woke up in the morning, he was already gone for work. And that was the moment when she thought it might be time for her to go.
She spent the whole packing and unpacking her suitcase. She had just unpacked it again when she got the call from Dana filling her in.
Her heart stopped when she could hear keys in the lock as the door slowly opened and she saw Robby walk in, he was wearing his hoodie from the beer festival they went to together. It was ratty and faded, but it was one of his favorite hoodies, he wore it all the time but especially on days when he wasn’t feel great. It not only reminded him of happier times with Y/N but it was also one of the last things him and Adamson did together.
The minute he made eye contact with her he pulled out his airpods and dropped his backpack by the door.
“You’re here.” He sighed tears filling up his eyes. “I was afraid that…” He started his voice cracking.
Y/N didn’t say anything as she rushed to his arms pulling him into her embrace. She felt his shoulders sag as he held onto her tightly lifting her so she was standing on her tip-toes.
“Dana told me what happened. I’m so sorry baby.” She whispered and she could feel him crying into her shoulder.
They stayed like this for a long time Robby holding onto her tightly afraid that if he let her go he would lose her. But after a while he pulled away and wiped the tears from his face. He took in Y/N’s tear stained face as well as he took a step back.
“Would you like to go on a walk with me?” Robby asked.
“Uh, yeah.” Y/N replied but the pit in her stomach grew to the size of a boulder. Was this the end, was this when Robby was going to finally break up with her.
And if I’m not the man you bargained for
And the bright red love you bought me for is gone.
They walked in silence into the park. Both kept trying to start the conversation but neither knew exactly where to start.
At first Y/N thought they were just wondering, but soon she realized that Robby was leading them back to her favorite spot in the park.
“Y/N, I’m so sorry.” Robby finally spoke breaking the silence as he turned to Y/N. “I have been horrible lately.”
“Things have been rough I know I…” Y/N started.
“No, Y/N let me say this.” Robby said as he grabbed her hands. “I have been struggling, if I am being honest I have been struggling since Adamson died. But I have just kept pushing down all of my feelings. Trying to pretend I was ok. But Y/N I’m not ok.” He said his voice cracking.
Will you lie here under star drowned skies
And look me in the eyes when I say
These are our hard times
“I constant feel like I’m failing everyone. But most importantly I feel like I am failing you.”
“Michael…”
“No I am or I have continuously failed you in our relationship. Ever since Adamson died I have been a husk of who I once was. I felt like I failed him and I kept trying to correct my failure, in every patient after him but it just made the losses so much worse. And I just kept pushing myself harder and harder to be better and to not be affected by so much. I thought it made me a better doctor and a better partner if I just pretended I was fine. But you knew, you knew I was ok, and you tried so hard to get me to open up. But I felt like if I opened up and I let myself feel all the pain I was feeling, I wouldn’t survive it. And I knew that was fair to you. I knew that I was shutting you out and pushing you away, and I could see how badly I was hurting you. But I thought that maybe if I pushed you away, it would be better for you.” Michael sobbed as he tried to hid his face from Y/N.
“Hey,” Y/N said as she reached up and placed her hand on his cheek turning him so he was looking at her.
“And I know after everything I put you through I don’t deserve to ask that you forgive me. Hell I thought after our fight last night you would have left me. You probably should have left me.” He quickly grabbed her hands. “But I want you to know, today I broke. Today it was the final straw and I couldn’t hold it back anymore. After losing Leah, I fully broke down. I couldn’t breath, I couldn’t think straight. Hell I prayed. But it made me realize that I can’t keep pushing down these emotions, I can’t keep pretending to be ok. Jack gave me the number for his therapist, I’m going to reach out.”
Y/N could feel her own tears streaming down her face as she watched Robby finally let her in.
“And I’m not going to hide things from you anymore. I’m not going to try and push you away. I love you so much. And I know I have taken you for granted. And I am so sorry. I’m so sorry I’ve not been the partner you deserve. But I can’t imagine my life without you. I was terrified I was going to come home tonight and find you gone. Things are going to be different I promise. And I know I have no right to ask you this, but I am begging you, I would get down on my knees but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to get my up.” He cracked a smile. “Please stay. Let me make it up to you. Let me show you how much I love you.”
Y/N quickly pulled Michael into her arms, holding onto him tightly as she sobbed.
“Where else am I going to go?” She whispered and he pulled her in for a long kiss as the two held each other crying. But they were not longer tears of sadness, instead they were tears of joy, so happy that they had found their way back to one another.

Companion Story: As it Was
“Why are we not taking my truck again?” Jack yawned as he stretched out as much as he could in the cramped Prius.
“Because someone decided to work a shift the day before we left for vacation, and is currently running on 2 hours of sleep.” Y/N laughed. “And you know that I don’t like driving the truck.”
“You can put in a chest tube without blinking but you are still scared of driving a stick.” He laughed.
“Will you just sleep, you are too sassy when you are sleep deprived and we will not survive the 3 hour drive if you keep acting like this.”
“Fine! But I would be much more comfortable in my truck and not in your toy car.” He teased.
“Jack, you forget I can murder you and make it look like an accident.”
“You took an oath to do no harm Doctor.”
“I think they would understand.”
Jack smiled as he reached over and gently placed his hand on her check and she leaned into his touch.
“I love you so much.” He said and her heart swelled. She and Jack had been together for over five years, but everyday she still felt so lucky to have him in her life.
“I love you too you old grump.” She said as she turned to look at him taking him in. “Now sleep.”
“As you wish” He teased quoting her favorite movie as he closed his eyes.
Y/N giggled.
She barely had turned back to look at the road, when she felt the impact of the car, and everything went black
*******
Jack woke with a groan, every part of his body hurt. He had blood on the side of his head.
“Y/N,” He grumbled as he tried to get his eyes to focus. All he could see was the shattered glass of the windshield. “Y/N” he said again, hoping for a response. He could feel the ever familiar sense of dread washing over him. “Please,” He whispered as he slowly turned to look at Y/N.
His heart stopped as he saw her. Her side of the car was absolutely caved in there was shattered glass all over her lap and her face was covered in blood. And she didn’t look like she was moving or breathing.
“Y/N!” He screamed as he tried to reach over to her, but the seat belt locked him in place. “Fuck!” Quickly he reached down to his pants pocket to grab his pocket knife. Jack winched in pain as he could tell his wrist was fractured, but he pushed past the pain to cut through his seat belt and leaned over to check on Y/N. “Sweatheart, open your eyes for me.” He pleaded as he held out a shaking hand and felt for a pulse.
“No,” He gasped when he didn’t feel one. “Y/N, don’t do this.” And in that moment he fully kicked into doctor mode. He quickly reached over and sliced through her seat belt, one hand supporting her head. “Y/N, come on, I need you to wake up.” The minute she was free Jack started to pull her out of the car. His whole body screamed with pain but he pushed it down knowing that Y/N needed him.
The minute he got her out and laid down on the wet grass, he started compressions.
“Come on Y/N.” He kept repeating. His wrist felt like it was on fire as he put all of his body weight into his hands for the compressions.
“Is she alright?” A voice called. “I’ve called 911, they are on their way.”
Jack didn’t respond, his whole focus was on getting Y/N’s heart pumping again.
“The other driver barely has a scratch on him,” The bystander called. “He is loaded though, there are open cans of beer in his passenger seat.”
Rage rushed over Jack as he looked up from giving rescue breaths.
“What?” He growled. “He was drunk.”
“Yeah the car reaks. Who the hell is getting drunk at 10am in the morning?”
Jack’s whole body shook, and if the love of his life wasn’t hanging on by a thread, and his hands weren’t the only thing keeping her alive at that moment, he knew that he would be on top of that bastard ripping him to shreads.
It felt like hours before he finally heard the sound of the sirens growing louder as they headed his way.
“Do you hear that baby, the ambulance is on it’s way. We will be back to the Pitt soon, and Robby’s working today, he will fix everything.” He soothed mostly talking to himself trying to keep himself from spiraling.
“Dr Abbott?” A voice said and he turned to see that he recognized the paramedics.
“Y/N isn’t breathing and she currently doesn’t have a pulse, we need to keep going with compression and…” He started rambling a bit.
“Are you ok?”
“Don’t worry about me, we need to save her.” He snapped as one of them took over on compressions.
The exhaustion and pain was starting to catch up with him as they all loaded into the back of the ambulance.
As he watched the parametric work on Y/N, Jack could feel the tears welling up in his eyes. He couldn’t lose her. He wouldn’t survive it.
Quickly he pulled out his phone, that miracuriously wasn’t damaged in the crash. He mindlessly called Robby his eyes never leaving Y/N’s pale form.
“Brother, you haven’t even been gone from this place for a full 4 hours, what are you doing calling. I thought you and Y/N were heading up to the cabin this weekend.” Robby teased
“Robby,” Jack started his voice cracking. But he could hear the sound of the intercom calling in the incoming ambulance.
“Listen I have to go we have…” Robby started.
“It’s me, I’m coming in the ambulance.” Jack snapped.
Robby froze. “What?”
“Y/N and I got in a car wreck. Some drunk bastard hit us.”
“Are you…”
“I’m fine, but Robby, Y/N she’s… God… I had to do compression until the ambulance showed up, and she still not… I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
“We will be ready when you get here. Jack. We are going to do all we can.” Robby said but he felt like he was going to lose it. Jack and Y/N were the closet thing he had to family. And he knew that Jack worshiped the ground that Y/N walked on. He had never seen someone more devoted to another person in his whole life. And he also knew that Y/N was incredibly good for Jack. The change that Robby had seen in his friend since the two had been together was amazing. He didn’t even want to think about what would happen if they lost Y/N.
It only took the ambulance around 10 minutes to get to Pittsburgh Truma Medical Center and as they rolled in Jack could see the entire team waiting for them.
“Jesus fucking Christ, you are not ok.” Robby snapped watching as Jack limped in, covered in blood.
“Robby, she needs you, please don’t worry about me. Y/N needs you.” He pleaded and Robby had never heard his friend sound so broken before.
Robby nodded. “Dr Mohan will you take Dr Abbott to a room to check him over.”
“No Robby I need to be with her I need…”
“Jack you know you can’t. You are hurt. Please go with Samira.”
Jack looked over at Y/N who was in trauma one already and was surrounded by people working on her.
Jack just nodded as he limped behind Dr. Mohan following her as she brought him into room.
“I think I’ve got a fractured wrist.” He started as he hoisted himself onto the gurney wincing with pain.
“You are limping pretty bad, does your leg hurt?’ Mohan asked.
“My leg always hurts.” He snapped back, he know he shouldn’t take everything out on Mohan, she was just trying to help. But all he wanted was to be back next to Y/N. He needed to be useful in some capacity or he was going to lose his mind.
“Does it hurt more than usual?” Mohan continued. She had only worked with Dr. Abbott a handful of times, but she knew enough that he got defensive and standoffish when he was stressed. Not that he wasn’t always standoffish.
He sighed. “Yeah,” He reached down and started to take off his prosthetic. “I think my prosthetic pushed back into my leg in the crash.” When he pulled the prosthetic off he coud see that there was quite a bit of blood. “Fuck.”
While Mohan worked on Dr. Abbott, Robby was working on Y/N. She had broken ribs, and some internal bleeding from the wreck as well as a shattered femur.
“I think she has a collapsed lung.” Langdon said.
“Fuck,” Robby sighed. “Is Garcia on her way down?”
“She’s stuck in surgery, she said she will get down as soon as she can.”
“I don’t know how long Y/N has to wait.”
“I know boss, I’m going to put in a chest tube, give her the best chance. Have you checked in on Abbott?”
“Mohan is with him.” Robby said and he didn’t know if he could face his friend again without having any good news to share.
“He’s probably losing his mind, I know I would be if this was Abby.” Langdon said his voice cracking. Every doctor’s worst nightmare is their own loved ones coming in and their inability to help them.
“Robby,” Dana said popping into the room. “They just brought in the other driver. .350 blood alcohol, small lacerations on his arms from the air bag, but that’s it.”
“Fuck,” Robby sighed. “Do not let Abbott know he’s here, and we need to stick security outside his room, I’m sure the police will want to talk to him.”
“How is she?”
Robby just shook his head as he ran his hands over his face. “It’s touch and go, she needs surgery but everyone is tide up. I don’t know what he is going to do if we lose her.”
“Hey, don’t think like that, not yet. That girl is a fighter, lord knows she has to be in order to put up with Jack.” Dana said and Robby cracked a smile.
“Will you go check in on the other driver, if I go in there, I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
“And you don’t think I won’t smother him with a pillow. That’s our girl in there.” Dana said seriously tears in her eyes. “I’ll send one of the med students. I’ll make it Santos, Lord knows that girl could frighten a nun.”
“Robby!” Langdon yelled as he burst out of the trauma bay. “She’s coding.”
“Shit,” Robby ran in. “What happened!”
“We had her back and stable, but then she started seizing.”
“God call Nuro, she most likely had some severe head trauma. And where the fuck is Garcia!”
After being patched up and told that he needed to stay off his leg for a few days to allow it to heal, Abbott sat in his hospital room, running through scenerio after scenarios of all the injuries Y/N could have because of the crash. And he kept cursing himself for picking up a shift the day before. If he hadn’t he could have driven, and it would be him in that room not his girl. Y/N didn’t deserve this. Not after putting up with him for so long. He knew he could be an absolutely menace to live with. Some days he would come home from work and not want to utter a word to anyone. Other times, he needed to hold her as close to him as possible. She was he anchor. She kept him going.
“Jack,” A voice said and his head snapped up to see Dana making her way in.
“How is she, is she ok?” He rambled his eyes wild.
“Robby is still working on her, so is Langdon.” She sighed as she walked up to his placing her hand on his back, as she rubbed circles. “How are you holding up?”
“I’ve got a fracture wrist, but Dr Mohan’s got this temporary brace on, so it feels better, and my prosthetic cut into my leg, but she’s got that wrapped up as well. She wants me to get a head CT but I…”
“I read your chart Jack, but how are you doing?” She asked looking into his eyes.
“I…” And finally the flood gates broke. “I can’t lose her Dana.” He sobbed.
“Oh darlin’” Dana wrapped her arms around him.
“She’s my whole world, and I know I don’t deserve her, hell she deserves far better than me, but I can’t lose her not like this. It’s my fault. I took the shift last night, and Y/N didn’t want me to drive because I didn’t get much sleep. And she won’t drive the truck so we had to take her stupid fucking prius. It should be me Dana.”
“Jack Abbott, don’t you dare talk like that.” Dana scolded. “That girl loves you so much. She would be so angry at you talking like this. And you know that the only person whose fault this is, is that drunk bastard who hit you.”
Jack’s head snapped up and his eyes were filled with rage.
“Is he here, did they bring that fucker here.”
“Jack, you know I can’t tell you that.”
“Y/N could die, and that fucker doesn’t even have a scratch on him.”
“Jack,” Robby said as he walked in the room.
“Michael, how is she?”
Robby’s jaw clenched as he pulled a chair closer so he could sit in front of his friend.
“No, don’t do that. Just tell me.” Jack snapped. “Is she alive?”
“She’s alive, but it’s not looking good Jack. She came in with a collapsed lung, internal bleeding, her left femur is shattered and we think she has a brain bleed.”
Jack let out a shaking breath. He knew he should ask more questions, but he couldn’t form words.
“She is going to head up to surgery, did you want to see her before she heads up.” Robby asked.
“Yes.” He said as he reached for his prosthetic.
“Jack, let me get you a wheel chair. Dr. Mohan said…” Dana started.
“I’ll be fine.” He snapped as he stood up wincing slightly from the pain but he limped his way out into the hall and to trauma one.
The minute he laid eyes on her, the seasoned trauma doctor froze. He had seen so many horrific injuries in his time both in the service and as a trauma doctor, but nothing could have prepared him for seeing Y/N lying there looking lifeless. Tubes running all around her and the intubation tube running down her throat. She was still covered in blood and bruises but Jack couldn’t help but think that she still looked absolutely stunning.
“Are you ok?” Robby said laying his hand on Abbott’s back.
“No. I won’t be until I know she’s going to survive this.” Jack sighed as he walked into room and in just a few strides was by Y/N’s side her cold hand tightly in his grasp.
“Y/N, I’m here.” He leaned forward and kissed her forehead. “You are going to be just fine. You have to be. You cannot leave me. What happened to you taking care of me when I turn senile.” He tried to laugh but it sounded more like a sob. Behind him he could feel the eyes of all the med students and nurses staring at him. But he didn’t care. “You have to pull through. You fight, you fight harder than you have ever fought before. You are so fucking strong. You can beat this. Just come back to me.”
“We are ready for her.” Garcia said quietly.
“I’ll be here when you wake up. I love you so god damn much.” He kissed her forehead again.
The minute Y/N was wheeled out of the room, Jack felt his knees buckle and he collapsed. Luckily Robby was waiting behind with a wheelchair.
“Thank you for all you have done for her Robby. You gave her a fighting chance.” Jack said.
“Don’t thank me, it was your quick work after the wreck that really saved her.” Robby said as he started to wheel Jack out.
“I don’t want to be here anymore… I want to go home. Why won’t you let me leave.” A voice yelled across the Pitt.
Jack looked up to see what was clearly a very drunk man argueing with Ahmad.
“That’s him.” Jack growled and he was up before Robby even had a chance to stop him.
“Jack don’t!” Robby screamed. “Ahmad stop him!”
Ahmad quickly turned just in time to catch Jack as he he lunged for the guy.
“It should be you up there getting surgery. You hear me you piece of shit! How is it that you walked away with a few scratches, and the greatest woman I have ever known might die!” He screamed. “I should kill you.”
“Jack stop.” Robby said as he finally reached him grabbing him and pulling him back.
“He did this Robby. He’s the reason Y/N could die.”
“I know, I know Jack. The police are on their way.”
“It’s not enough, it won’t be enough if she dies.”
“I don’t even know who you are man.” The guy slurred and for a moment Robby thought about letting Jack have at him. But just in that moment two officers came in, ushering the drunk man back into his room to ask him questions.
“If she dies Robby, I swear to God I will kill him.” Jack said as he started to stagger. Robby quickly ushered Dana to bring the wheelchair back over.
“You will have to get in line. Everyone in this hospital has already called first dibs,” Robby said trying to lighten the mood. “Now, we need to get you up for a head CT.”
“I do not need a CT, my head is fine I…”
“At the very least humor me, I would like to know if your ego shows up on that CT since you got such a big head.” Robby teased and for the first time all morning, Jack cracked a small smile.
***********
It was hours before any new came about Y/N. Everyone kept checking in on Jack, trying to make sure he was staying preoccupied. They found on head CT that he has a slight concussion, but nothing that was concerning. Robby would pop in and run through all the patients they had so far, he knew that Jack needed to work in some capacity other wise it would drive him insane. Dana popped by while things were slow and the two of them watched their favorite cooking show, the one they used to watched together when Abbott used to work day shift. Even Langdon popped by a few times.
Jack had just closed his eyes to get some rest when Dana rushed in.
“Jack,” She said tears in her eyes.
His heart stopped. “Did I lose her.” He gasped.
“No they said everything went really well, and she is showing improvement. They are relatively confident she is going to pull through.”
His head slumped forward and he sobbed. It felt like the weight of the world he had been holding in, waiting for it to fully crush him was finally lifted off.
“Oh Jack,” Dana said as she ran to him pulling him into her arms.
“She’s ok,” He sobbed. “She’s going to be ok.”
“They said you can come up and see her, they have moved her into a private room.”
In an instant Jack was reaching for his prosthetic.
“No, hey, listen here mister.” Dana snapped. “Robby has insisted the only way you are getting out of this ER is if you use the wheelchair. He told me I had permission to use the soft restraints if you refused.”
“Who knew you were so kinky Dana.” Jack laughed.
Dana let out a loud laugh, there is the pain in the ass Dr. Abbott I know.” She smiled as she helped him into the chair. As they headed out Dana called out. “Princess your in charge until I get back.”
Jack felt like his whole body was vibrating. All he wanted to do was see her.
He didn’t realize he was holding his breath until Dana rolled him into her room and he laid eyes on her again, and he let out a loud sigh.
She still was covered in wires and tubes and she still had the intubation tube down her throat, but her color was so much better. When he reached out for her hand it didn’t feel nearly as cold.
“Hi baby,” He breathed and he pulled himself up so he could lean forward and kiss her forehead. “I’m here baby, you pulled through. I’m so proud of you.”
Against all of the hospital prodocals, Robby pulled some strings and had another hospital bed added to Y/N’s room. He knew there was no way Jack was going to leave that hospital without Y/N by his side, and although Jack swore up and down he could just sleep on the couch, Robby wasn’t about to let one of the best Trauma Doctors throw his back out.
He never left Y/N’s side the whole time she was out. And every day the doctors came back with good news. By day 3 they were able to pull the intubation tube out, just leaving her with cannula.
Jack was doing laps around the room, trying to get the strength back to his leg after being off it for a few days, when he noticed Y/N shift. Instantly he was by her side again holder her hand tightly.
“Baby, Y/N, can you hear me.” He pleaded desperate to see her eyes open.
Slowly Y/N’s eyes cracked open and she winced from the pain of the bright lights. She could feel the pressure of someone holding her hand as she looked to see it was Jack. The minute she saw him and saw the stitches on his head, she remember the car wreck.
“Are you ok?” She asked looking him up and down. Her voice was rough and horse, and it hurt to talk.
Jack smiled sadly tears in his eyes. “Sweetheart, you are the one laid up in a hospital bed, you shouldn’t be asking me if I’m alright.”
“Car crash I…” She said trying to remember anything, but all she remember was Jack telling her he loved her and then the loud crash and darkenss.
“Some drunk asshole hit us, don’t worry I have already talked to the police, that fucker is going to do some hard time.” Jack said and she could see the rage in his eyes. Carefully she lifted her hand up to place it on his cheek. “I thought I was going to lose you Y/N. You weren’t breathing when I pulled you out of the car. I couldn’t find a pulse. I… I have never been more terrified in my entire life.” He said as he leaned forward placing his forehead on hers. “You can’t ever leave me baby. I need you more than I could possible explain.”
They stayed like this for a while, Jack finding comfort in the sound of her labored breathing.
“Well, I don’t have a ride anymore, so I wouldn’t be able to leave even if I wanted to.” She teased. “Guess you are going to have to teach me how to drive the truck.”
Jack laughed as he leaned down to kiss her.

How to Save a Life (Dr. Jack Abbott x Reader) Part 5

TRIGGER WARNING: DISCUSSION OF PTSD.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
Companion Piece: You Are My Sunshine
It was a normal shift, or as normal as any shift in the Pitt could be. After a heartbreaking case, Y/N heads outside to clear her head and talk to her husband Dr. Jack Abbott. But suddenly a normal shift takes a deadly turn when Y/N is taken hostage by a disgruntled patient
Jack prayed. He wasn’t religious by any means, but he needed a task; he needed something to do as he sat and waited for news. He had been sitting and waiting for hours; he could feel that all of the blood that covered his arms and was soaked into his clothes was starting to dry. But he didn’t dare move.He held Y/N’s necklace in his hands and slid her wedding ring onto his dog tags, they had been brought to him by Garcia, an hour into waiting.
He couldn’t stop thinking about the future he had already dreamed about, and one that at any moment he could find out that he had lost.
Once Y/N had told him she was pregnant, he could picture the future. He imagined building a crib, the late nights rocking his child back to sleep after they had woken up crying. He had already planned on the play set he would build in the backyard when they were old enough. In his mind his baby was a girl, and he could picture taking her out on daddy-daughter days out. And lord help her when she decided dating. His baby wasn’t even born yet and he could never imagine anyone ever being good enough for her.
But all of these thoughts were hanging in the balance, he knew the odds of the baby surviving were very slim. The trauma your body had gone through was enough to cause a miscarriage.
He crumbled, placing his head in his hands. He had always feared that his life with Y/N was too good to be true. Jack couldn’t imagine he would ever find someone as wonderful as Y/N. She was the light to his dark, she was the sweet to his sour, she was the day to his night. People were often surprised they were together, not just because of the age difference, but also because of how different of people they were. But somehow she fit with him perfectly.
She brought out happiness in him, he thought he had lost long ago. And she knew how to calm him down when he had bad days. He loved the quiet moments with her the most. On the rare times when they both had days off, he loved just being in her presence. He loved when she cuddled up next to him while he watched sports. She would sit with her book in her hands but her head rested on his shoulder. She didn’t even have to say anything to be a comfort to him.
“Jack,” A voice brought him out of his thoughts and he snapped his head up to see Robby standing in front of him tears in his eyes.
“Is she…” Jack asked terrified as he got to his feet.
“She’s fine, they said everything went really well. She going to be just fine.” Robby said his voice cracking.
Jack let out a cry. “She’s ok.” He sobbed.
“She’s ok.” Robby said and he pulled his friend into a hug.
“Wait,” Jack pushed back. “The baby, what about the baby?”
“That baby is stubborn as hell Jack, it is definitely your kid. Everyone is calling them a miracle baby. I told them of course they survived, that baby is an Abbott.”
“Oh thank God.” He cried pulling Robby back into his arms
“They said she should be waking up shortly if you wanted to go and see her.”
“Yes! Thank you Micheal. Thank you so much for everything. I owe you big time.”
“You know Micheal is a great name for a baby. Could do Michelle if it’s a girl.” He teased as he gave Jack a pat on the back.
Jack laughed as the two of them walked towards Y/N’s room.
They had just walked in, when they could see Y/N stirring.
“Baby,” Jack said as he rushed to her side.
“Jack,” She murmured as she started to try to sit up.
“Y/N, you need to take it easy. Just stay laying down.”
“The baby, Jack the baby. Please tell me…” She started to panic reaching out for Jack’s hand.
“The baby is just fine. Robby called her a miracle.”
“I did not use the word miracle.” Robby insisted. “I just called her an Abbott.
“Her?” Y/N smiled.
“Jack’s convinced it’s a girl.”
“You are?” Y/n said as she looked up at him.
“Call it intuition I just feel like that’s a little Michelle in there.” He said as he placed his hand on her stomach.
Y/N laughed. “Did Robby convince you to name our baby after him?”
“I just added some suggestions to the conversation.” Robby smiled as he walked over to Y/N’s bedside. “I have to head back, but I’m so glad you are ok. I can’t be down one of my best residents.” He kissed her forehead.
“I’m going to tell Langdon you said I was one of your best residents.” She smiled .
Robby laughed. “Call me if you need anything.”
“Are you ok?” Y/N asked.
“You scared the shit out of me Y/N.” Jack said his voice cracking.
“I didn’t think he would actual hurt me.” She said her voice cracking as she gripped his hand tighter.
“I’m so sorry, I should have gotten you out of there, I was trying to figure out a way to get you away from him but I…”
“Jack,” She quickly placed her hand on his cheek. “Don’t do that, I know you want to blame yourself but don’t you dare.”
“I could have lost you Y/N. We did lose you for a while. And it was the closet to hell I ever want to come.” He sobbed as he leaned forward and placed his head on her hand.
“Oh Jack,” Y/N said as she reached over and ran her fingers through his hair. “It’s ok baby, I’m here.”
It took a while for Y/N to recover but the minute she was given the go ahead, Y/N was begging to go home. She missed their house, she missed Cooper and she missed being able to fall asleep in Jack’s arms. Jack had taken off 2 full weeks to help make sure Y/N could get all settled at home, although he fully planned on taking off more, terrified that if he left her alone, she may completely vanish.
Jack had brought her some comfy clothes for her to leave the hospital in, it included her favorite t-shirt of his to wear, and her favorite pair of sweatpants. Both smelled so much like Jack and their home that Y/N felt like she could cry. She couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that her life has almost ended, and she had almost lost everything.
She tried to pretend she wasn’t affect deeply by the shooting, but Jack could see that she was jumping at every small sound and her eyes were quickly checking her surroundings whenever they went into a different room. She looked just like him.
By the time they made it out to the car, Y/N’s hands were shaking, she kept expecting to see Driscol turn the corner waiting for her again.
“Y/N,” Jack said as he helped her into his truck. “Talk to me, what’s going on?”
Y/N sighed as she reached her shaking hands out to grab his. “I’m so scared Jack.” She said her voice breaking. “I keep thinking something is going to happen, I’m terrified of someone hurting me again or god forbid someone hurts you.”
“Oh baby.” Jack said as he grabbed her face in his hands. “I am never going to let anything happen to you again I promise. And you don’t have to worry about me, nothing is going to happen to me.”
“You can’t know that for sure. It was such a normal shift before Driscol showed up. And hell you know that people are just getting more violent. I don’t know how I am supposed to go to work and pretend like I’m not watching my back everytime I work with a patient. And I’m going to lose my mind everytime you go to work, I’m terrified you won’t come back.”
He recognized and empathized with everything Y/N was saying. It was fears that were already filling his head. He knew that he would be panicked the whole time Y/N was at work, afraid of losing her again. But seeing Y/N having the same fears, really showed Jack how unhealthy and devastating those thoughts were.
“Y/N, will you consider going to therapy with me. I am feeling the same fears, hell you know I already don’t want you to work while you are pregnant, but I know that you would go absolutely insane without anything to do. I think it would be good for us to talk to someone. I can talk to Dr. Cody and see if he has a couples therapist he can recommend, or if you would rather have someone to talk to by yourself I can see if he can recommend someone for you as well.”
Y/N leaned into Jacks hands as she brought her hands up to grab his wrists smiling.
“When did you become so wise?”
“Someone told me once that you can’t just keep all of your thoughts to yourself, sometimes you have to share them with others, so that way they don’t eat you alive. She was far wiser than me.” He smiled as he pulled her in for a long kiss.
“Let’s go home.” Y/N said and Jack about ran to the driver’s side of his truck so ready to have her back home.
As they pulled into the driveway, Y/N as she saw the banner that was hung on the door. It read Welcome Home Y/N.
“Who…” She started as she looked at Jack tears in her eyes.
“Dana got Harrison Mckay and Tanner Langdon to make it for you.” Jack smiled as he leaned over and kissed her cheek.
“I just…” She said. “It’s beautiful.”
He quickly hopped out and rushed to her side.
‘I’m so happy your home baby,” He said as he helped her walk from the car to their front door.
She could hear Cooper parking through the door, and she couldn’t help but beam.
“Aww Coop, I missed you too.” She smiled as Jack opened the door and Cooper came barreling at her.
“Cooper, be careful.” Jack laughed as he bent down to give Coopers some good petss
“He’s ok, he just missed his mom.” Y/N said and she leaned onto Jack so she could pet Cooper.
“Y/N,” Jack said hesitantly wanting to make sure Y/N didn’t hurt herself.
“I’m ok Jack. I’m better than ok, I’m back home with my boys.” She smiled.
“Let’s get you sitting down, Doctor’s orders.” He said as he ushered them towards the couch. “Why don’t I put on one of those trashy tv shows you like.”
“Hey don’t call them trashy, you know you love them too.” She smiled as he carefully helped her onto the couch, pulling her into his arms.
The minute they were sat on the couch Cooper came bounding up, snuggling right into Y/N side his head laying on her stomach.
“He is so ready to meet his sister.” Y/N smiled as she gave Cooper some good scratches.
Jack couldn’t help but smile, so happy to have Y/N back home and safe in his arms.

TRIGGER WARNING: Discussion of injury, negative self-talk.
This one gets a bit spicy. I tried to make it even spicer, but I learned I am not good at it, lol.
Jack hated physical therapy. He hated the sound of the machines, the clicking and stretching. He hated the smell. He hated the obnoxiously bright lights. All of it reminded him of the countless visits he had. It brought him back to a very dark time after he lost his leg. It brought him back to the feelings of hopelessness and desperation.
But this time, he wasn’t there for himself, this time he was there for Y/N. After multiple surgeries to repair her femur, Y/N was on a recovery track. But it was a slow and grueling one.
He sat in a corner trying to read but he just kept reading the same sentence over and over because his focus was on Y/N as she tried her best to walk with her physical therapist.
“Fuck,” She screamed as she crumbled her therapist catching her. “I think we are done.”
“You still have 10 minutes…” The therapist started.
“No I’m done!” Y/N screamed and Jack was instantly on his feet heading towards her.
“I’ve got her.” He said and the therapist just walked off. “Baby, are you ok?”
“I’m fine, I just want to go home.” She snapped at him.
Jack sighed. Ever since Y/N had started physical therapy, she was constantly short with him. It felt as though she was pushing him away. He knew the pain and frustration she was feeling, and he knew that eventually she would confide in him. But Jack also didn’t want to push her too far, knowing it could break her. So he had patience, and tried to be there in whatever way he could.
“Come on,” He said as he got her crutches and handed them to her. “Let’s get you home.”
The whole car ride rome, Y/N remained silent, her attention focused out the window.
“Why don’t we order pizza for dinner.” Jack chimed in.
“Sure,” She sighed but she wasn’t fully paying attention.
“Y/N, baby, are you ok?” He said and he reached out for her hand but she pulled her hand away.
“Jack I’m fine. I’m just tired.” She said as she ran her hand over her face.
“Ok,” He said as he nodded. He just accepted her answer. He knew her, he knew her better than most anyone, and he knew at some point she would let him in. He knew she would breakdown and he would be there to catch her when she did.
When they got home, Jack came over to her side of the car to help her out, but she didn’t grab his hand. “I’ve got it.” She snapped and again Jack just nodded. He stayed by her side ready to catch her if he needed.
Ever since she had gotten out of the hospital, Jack had been by her side. He had taken off work, using all of the PTO he had built up and never used. He had also spent so much time making sure that everything in the house was set up in a way that would make it easier for Y/N to recuperate. He had set up their guest bedroom into their makeshift masters so that Y/N wouldn’t have to struggle up the stairs. Event though he offered to carry her up the stairs every night but she quickly shut that down.He had also moved her entire wardrobe down into that room.
“I’ll order the pizza, you want your usual?” Jack called.
“Sure,” Y/N called back as she made her way to the kitchen.
“What are you doing?” He asked.
“I’m going to get us plates.” She said.
“I can get them.” Jack said as he made his way towards her.
“Jesus Christ Jack, I’m not helpless I can get the fucking plates!” Y/N screamed as she threw her crutches to the ground.
Jack froze looking at Y/N his eyes wide. “Baby…”
“No, I can’t fucking do it.” Her voice cracked hard as she started to take a step she let out a cry of pain and she collapsed to the ground.
“Y/N,” Jack rushed to her side.
“I’m sorry I’m so sorry.” Y/N cried as Jack sat down next to her.
“What are you sorry about?” He asked.
“I’ve been such a bitch to you, for so long. And you have just been absolutely wonderful with everything. And I have been so horrible.”
“You have not been horrible.” Jack tried to sooth.
“No I have, I have been horrible to you and I have been horrible to everyone.”
“I know it’s hard baby, trust me, I know.”
Y/N let out another sob as she placed her head in her hands.
“Baby, talk to me. What’s going on in the beautiful head of yours?” He asked as he rubbed her back.
“I feel so guilty.”
“Why do you feel guilty?”
“I shouldn’t be feeling so bad about how badly my recovery is going. I’m alive, and I will be able to walk again. I should be grateful. And I hate that you have to witness all of this. After everything you have gone through, me being upset must feel so ridiculous to you.” She sobbed.
Jack was shocked. He had never thought about the fact that Y/N may have thought he was judging her for her journey, based on what he went through.
“Baby, I do not think you are ridiculous. What you are going through is really hard. Really hard. Just because my recovery journey looked different doesn’t mean I’m judging you for yours. How long have you been feeling like this?”
“Since the first appointment, I could see how uncomfortable you were being back at physical therapy. And it just got me thinking about how stupid you must think I am. I didn’t lose my leg, I shouldn’t be complaining”
He pulled her into his arms. “I would never think that, and you know it. You’re right, being at physical therapy does bring back bad memories of a very rough time in my life. But I can be a little bit uncomfortable to make sure that you are supported. You are worth it.”
Y/N just groaned as she buried herself further into Jack’s embrace.
“Look at me.” He said as he held her head in his hands. “I don’t want you to not talk to me because you think you don’t deserve to complain. Physical therapy is the absolute fucking worst. And I am going to fully understand what you are feeling and going through. Hell I am a wealth of knowledge when it comes to surviving the recovery journey. I just want to help you. You know I hate seeing you like this. It tears me up inside. I just wish I could fix it for you instantly so you wouldn’t have to go through this.” Jack’s voice cracked slightly.
“I hate feeling so helpless. I hate that I can’t work. I hate that I don’t feel like I’m making any progress. And I hate how I feel like I am such a burden to you, and I…” She hesitated her eyes looking into Jack’s. “I hate that I feel like you would have been better off if I died in the crash.”
Jack’s heart stopped. He hadn’t realized how bad things had gotten with Y/N. He felt horrible that he hadn’t recognized the signs, and hadn’t done more to help her.
“Y/N.” He said firmly. “Don’t you dare say that. I was an absolute mess when I thought I was going to lose you. You are my life. If I lost you I wouldn’t know what to do. I’m so sorry I didn’t realize things were this bad.”
“I didn’t want you to know. I wanted to pretend I was ok, and pretend I wasn’t a hot fucking mess.” Y/N sighed.
“Baby,” Jack pulled her in for a kiss. “You are not a hot fucking mess. You are just hot.” He teased and she cracked a smile. “There is that beautiful smile I have been missing.”
“Have I told you how wonderful you are lately?” Y/N sighed burying her face in Jack’s chest again.
“I know I’m a fucking catch.” Jack replied and Y/N laughed.
They sat for a while before Jack scooped her up and carried her back to the couch. He sat down holding her tightly in his lap.
“I love you.” Y/N said as she ran her fingers through his hair. “I love you so much. You are the best part of my life.”
“I love you too. Will you promise to let me know when you are getting overwhelmed or feeling guilty. I want to be there to tell you how much I love you and how proud of you I am.” Jack said.
“You are proud of me?” Y/N said her eyes watering again.
“I am always proud of you, my girl.” Jack replied as he pulled her in for another long kiss. “You are a badass doctor who is absolutely brilliant and so unbelievably kind.
The sweet kisses suddenly turned passionate as Y/N began kissing Jack’s neck.
“Y/N,” He moaned.
“Take me to bed Jack.” She purred in his ear.
He quickly scooped her up and started towards the guest bedroom.
“No, I want you to make love to me in our bed.” She insisted as she sucked on the spot right below his ear she knew drove him wild.
“We aren’t going to make it there if you keep doing that.” Jack growled as he started to carry her up the stairs.
Y/N giggled. “I thought you pride yourself on your patience. Dr Abbott.”
“You make being patient a struggle darling.”
He walked them into the bedroom and he dropped Y/N on the bed gently and then he was on her in an instant.
His lips kissed down her throat as his hands roamed her body causing her to moan.
“Jack,” She moaned as his hands wandered under her shirt.
“You are far too dressed.” He said as he instantly pulled her shirt off over her head.
Y/N blushed a little bit remembering what outfit she was wearing. Her sweatset, sports bra, and least flattering pair of underwear.
Instantly Jack could feel the mood change and he pulled back.
“What’s wrong?” He asked.
“I just look super sexy in my outfit right now.” She said trying to make a joke out of it, but he could hear the sadness in her voice.
“Y/N, I would find you sexy in whatever you wore. Hell I think you are sexy in scrubs.”
Y/N smiled. “That must be really hard for you at work.” She teased.
“Oh it’s impossible. I constantly want to pull you into a room and fuck you senseless.” He growled.
“Jack!” Y/N gasped but Jack’s mouth was instantly back on hers.
*********
Y/N woke to the sound of whimpering. She groaned sleepily trying to find the source of the sound. She instantly sat up when she saw Jack thrashing in his sleep.
“No, please, no.” He mumbled in his sleep.
Y/N was no stranger to Jack’s nightmares. While they had gotten better since he started going to therapy, ever since the wreck, they had become more frequent.
“Y/N no,” He broke and she could tears falling down his cheek
“Jack, honey.” She said as she gently placed her hands on his chest. “Honey, you need to wake up.”
“Please I can’t lose you, please.” He sobbed.
“Jack, wake up, it’s just a nightmare.” She shook him a little.
“No, no, no.” He just kept repeating as his body started to tremble.
“Jack!” She said a bit more forcefully as she grabbed his face with her hands.
His eyes snapped open and his brown eyes frantically searched hers.
“Are you ok?” He asked terrified.
“Jack I’m fine, everything is fine, you were having a nightmare.” Y/N said running her fingers through his curls trying to calm him down.
“I thought… you were…” He started his breathing becoming erratic.
“Baby, Jack, I need you to breathe ok. Look at me, look at me.” Y/N quickly grabbed his hand and placed it on her throat so he could feel her pulse. “You feel that, I’m fine, it was just a nightmare. I’m here. You saved me.”
Jack took deep breaths, as he hand shifted from her throat to her cheek as he ran his thumb gently over her cheek.
“You are ok,” He said mostly to himself as he pulled Y/N into his embrace.
“I am ok.” She comforted as she felt him kiss the top of her head. Her head was resting on his chest and she could feel how rapidly his heart was beating.
They just lay together in silence as Jack tried to calm down.
“Clearly you aren’t the only one in this relationship who is a hot fucking mess.” Jack sighed.
Y/N playfully gasped. “You said I wasn’t a hot fucking mess.” She teased.
Jack laughed. “We can be hot fucking messes together.”
“I love you Jack.” Y/N said as she snuggled into his embrace.
“I love you too Y/N.” He sighed happily, and it wasn’t long before sleep found them once again.

Trigger Warnings: Discussion of Blood, and injuries. angst
“Jesus fucking Christ.” Robby yelled as he rushed to Y/N side. “Go get Langdon!” He yelled at Dana.
“Y/N, keep your eyes on me baby. Keep looking at me. You are going to be fine, you are going to be just fine.” Jack pleaded as he scooped her up into his arms. The room was swarmed with police, most of their focus was on Driscoll’s body, but some had surrounded Robby and Abbott. “I need you all to fucking move!” Jack screamed as he pushed past them running to trauma one.
“We will need to interview…” One of the officers said.
“Not now.” Robby snapped as he followed after Jack.
“We need to get people back, she is going to need…” Jack started when Langdon burst in.
“Jesus fuck,” He gasped as he rushed to gown and glove up.
“The bullet punctured her lung, there is no exit wound so we need to retrieve the bullet we…” Jack’s mind was realing, he was trying his hardest to stay in doctor mode to distract himself from fully spiraling. Y/N quickly reached out grasping his hand tightly.
“I’m so sorry.” She mumbled.
“Y/N, no you have nothing to apolgize for.” Jack’s voice cracked as he leaned over the bed, he could feel Robby and Langdon rushing around behind him. “I love you so much.”
“Kiss me,” Y/N pleaded knowing there was a possibility this may be the last time she would kiss him.
Jack let out a soft sob as he leaned down and pressed his lips to Y/N. The minute their lips connected, Y/N couldn’t help but remember their very first kiss.
They had been friends long before they had even felt anything more. They worked along side each other flawlessly. It’s almost as if they could read each others mind. If Jack was going to try something on a patient, Y/N was next to him with everything he would need without him ever even saying anything. And vice versa, he would appear in the moments when she started to feel overwhelmed, and all it would take would be his whisper of “You got this.” And she was filled with confidence.
And their friendship wasn’t just a work. He often invited her out after a shift, and they would talk for hours. Jack wasn’t one to let people in easily. He was a quiet person and he liked his quiet life. But she surprised him. She showed up and turned his world upside down. She was smart and funny, and being around him made him feel so much lighter. Y/N brought some light to his dark world.
He knew the exact moment he fell for her. It has been a normal day nothing super eventful. She was sitting down charting her latest patient and she had pulled out her glasses, ones she didn’t like people seeing her wearing, and she was heavily focus. So much so, that she had her tongue sticking out slightly. His heart swelled and he knew his feeling towards her had changed from friendship to more. But he didn’t want to ruin what they had. She was far to important to him to lose her. And he knew that he wasn’t the easiest to be in a relationship with, if his long list of exes were any indication. So he was respectful, he kept his feelings at bay. Plus he didn’t think she felt the same.
But little did he know, she had fallen for him around the same time. Every single thing on her shift had gone wrong, not in a bad way but just little things that were annoying. She misplaced her stethoscope, her badge stopped working and everytime she needed to buzz in anywhere, she had to ask for help like a child, and she got vomited on. After changing into new scrubs she headed up to the roof, just to clear her head. She had barely stepped out when it started to rain. She groaned and reached back for the door handle when it snapped off in her hand. She froze for a moment not fully believing that it had actually happened. The small drizzle of rain quickly turned into a downpour. She tried putting the handle back, she pounded on the door hoping that someone would hear her, she even thought about trying to jump down to the other balcony that was a story down. Finally in desperation, she tried to use her badge to try to shimmy the lock open and miraculously it worked. She rushed inside and back down to the Pitt.
“What happened to you?” Shen asked.
Suddenly there was the sound of someone laughing. Like gutteral laughter the kind that is absolutely addictive and hard not to laugh along with. As Y/N looked up she could see Abbott bent over in laughter. Normally she would be annoyed but with Jack she found it endearing.
“I’m glad you find this so hilarious Doctor Abbott.” Y/N sneered.
“You really have had the worst day.” He laughed as he walked past her. He was gone for only a second when suddenly she felt a blanket wrap around her. “Come on let’s give you dried off.” He said and her heart skipped a beat.
They day of their first kiss had been horrible. There had been a multiple car pile up and they lost 5 patients in total. One of them was a four month old baby. At the end of it all all Y/N wanted was to curl up in a ball and stay there forever. But she also knew that Jack needed her. And she needed Jack. They are the only ones who could possibly understand the pain they were feeling.
She knew exactly where he would be, and made her way up to the roof.
When she got out there she found him in his usual spot, he was standing on the other edge of the railing staring down at the ground below.
He turned slightly acknowledging her and then turned back.
“What are you doing up here?” He asked but Y/N didn’t say anything as she made her way towards the railing. When she reached it she quickly climbed over. “Whoa, what are you doing. Y/N you are afraid of height you…”
He went silent as he hand found his and she gave it a soft squeeze. They both just stood there taking in the world before them, finding comfort in each other’s presence. Nothing had to be said. Her head slowly lowered onto his shoulder, and he felt like he everything bad that happened that day didn’t matter, not when he had her by his side.
“Can I kiss you.” He suddenly blurted.
Y/N’s head lifted off his shoulder as she looked at him eyes wide.
“I don’t know why I said that, I have never felt anything like what I feel when I’m with you. I don’t feel like I have to pretend to be someone else when I’m with you I…”
Y/N cut him off by pulling him in for a kiss.
When they broke apart it was Jack’s turn to look surprised.
“You ramble when you are nervous.” Y/N smiled. “I find it very adorable.”
Jack pulled her back in for another long kiss.
As Jack pulled back he found that Y/N eyes were shut and she had a slight smile on her face.
“Y/N,” He called as he shook her slightly. “Y/N baby, open your eyes.” He shook her more vigorously this time. “Baby, open your eyes.” He quickly checked for a pulse. “She doesn’t have a pulse!” He screamed as he started compressions.
Robby moved quickly. “Langdon take over on compressions. Jack you need to back up.”
“No, Robby I got this, get the defib ready.” Jack insisted.
“Jack you can’t do this.”
“Micheal please. I need to do this. I will not lose her.”
Robby looked one more time at Jack before he sighed. “Intubate her Langdon.”
“Come on Y/N, come on.” Jack pleaded.
Robby worked around him as he got ready for the shock.
“Clear,” He snapped but Jack just kept working. “Jack,”
Jack threw his hands up and watched as Y/N’s body convulsed with the shock, but still no pulse.
“Starting compressions again.” He called and he could feel Y/N’s ribs cracking under his pressure. “Y/N, come back to me, please, come back to me.”
“Clear.” Robby called again, and Jack flew back, watching, waiting for the sound of the heart monitor to go but it still remained silent.
“No,” Jack said tears streaming down his face. “No!” He screamed starting compressions again. “No, that asshole does not get to take you from me. We have a life waiting for us baby. Hell we are just getting started. Y/N please. Don’t leave me.”
“Clear,” Robby called one more time and he hoped and prayed they could get her back. He knew Jack would be devastated, but also he knew the Pitt would never be the same without her.
Jack never thought the sound of a heart monitor beeping would bring him such joy, but as the sound filled the room, he let out a loud sob as he brought Y/N’s hand to his mouth.
“Oh thank god,” He breathed kissing it over and over.
“Garcia is ready for her.” Langdon said as he hung up the phone.
“Jack,” Robby started.
“Please let me stay with her as long as possible.” He pleaded.
“Ok, come on, I’ll go with you.” Robby said as the two of them rolled her up into surgery.
“Micheal, if something happens, if they can’t save her, I need you to be the one to tell me.” Jack said as the rode up in the elevator.
“Jack I can’t I…” Robby’s voice cracked.
“Please, if I hear it from one of those surgeon assholes I’ll lose it on them. Please.”
“Ok, Jack I can do that. Do you want me to stay up here with you? I can call Shen, see if he can come in early?”
“No, it’s ok, the staff is going to need you after everything that happened. Plus one of us is going to have to talk to Gloria and it cannot be me.”
Robby chuckled slightly. And as the doors opened they found Garcia and her team waiting for them.
“We’ve got this now.” She said giving Abbott a sad look. “We will do all we can.”
“She’s pregnant, 8 weeks, please try to save the baby as well.”
Garcia just nodded and Robby could see she had tears in her eyes. As they vanished, Jack crumble,d and Robby quickly pulled him into his arms and held him up as he sobbed.

TRIGGER WARNING: Violence against women, gun violence, suicide.
“Do you both think I’m an absolute idiot?” Driscoll sneered. “I know you two are either married or related. And by the way he keeps looking at you, I’m going to say married. It was a nice touch with the fake name. But you forget. I have been here for fucking hours! I was getting checked in when you came out into the lobby and people called you Doctor Abbott. I just wanted to see how you both thought this was going to play out.” He sneered and Jack’s jaw clenched.
“We are helping you, you are getting the help you think you are so entitled too, now can you let her go. She needs medical attention.”
“Well she can wait, just like I fucking had to.”
Jack was seething when suddenly there was a knock on the door. He turned to see Dana standing standing there with a piece of paper held up to the window.
“I have Mr. Driscoll's test results.” She said. “He’s clear to go. Looks like it was nothing but some severe heartburn.”
“Is that true?” Driscoll asked. “Mr big shot senior attending read those results, and tell me she’s not lying.”
Jack carefully opened the door grabbing the piece of paper from Dana, and he watched as she looked at Y/N, her eyes full of concern.
“Yep looks like it’s correct. Just a case of some severe heartburn, which can be treated by over the counter medication or tums.” Jack snapped.
“You are telling me I have been here for hours just to find out it’s fucking heartburn.” Driscoll screamed as squeezed Y/N neck tighter causing her to whimper.
“Would you rather you had a heart attack and died.”
Driscoll sighed. “Well take these stupid fucking things off me. I want to get the fuck out of this hell hole.” He shoved Y/N and she slowly started to peel the nodes off.
“Was this all worth it,” Jack said helping Y/N. “Taking someone hostage just to find out you have fucking heartburn.”
“Jack, stop.” Y/N snapped.
“Yeah listen to your fucking wife Jack, it’s not smart to antagonize the man holding a gun to your pretty wifes head.”
“Mr Driscoll, you are free to go.” Y/N said.
“You see, you are a lot more level headed than your husband. A lot more agreeable.”
“Don’t think that I am not seething inside you piece of shit.” She spat as he stood up and wrapped his arm around her chest again roughly.
“Oh you are feisty. I like that.” He whispered in her ear causing her to flinch a look of disgust on her face.
“You got what you wanted now let her go.” Jack snapped.
“No, not yet. Not until I am out of here with no issues. She’s my insurance.” Driscoll said yanking her out of the room with her with him, Jack following behind.
“Mr Driscoll, this has gone on long enough.” Robby snapped his eyes locked on Y/N’s injury. “Dr. Abbott is injuried, and I must insist that you hand her over.”
“You are in no position of authority to tell me what to do. She is coming with me to make sure that I am not going to be bothered by anyone else.”
Jack shook his head, as his breathing started to get more shallow as the panic and anxiety was becoming overwelming. His gut was telling him this wasn’t going to end well. And he knew, if he didn’t come up with a plan and come up with one soon, he was going to lose Y/N.
It felt like time stopped as Jack’s thoughts went back to their wedding.
He could feel his hands starting to shake as he stood at the make shift alter. Their wedding was being held at a botanical garden. He was standing under a gazebo that was surrounded by tulips. It was a small wedding. The only people there was Dana and Robby. And their dog Cooper of course.
“How you holding up?” Robby whispered as he stood next to him. Jack was wearing his military uniform and Robby was standing next to him wearing a classic black tuxedos with a red tulip boutonnier.
“I’m trying to convince myself I’m not going to cry when I see her.” Jack said straightening his tie.
“God you are so whipped.” Robby teased.
“She’s my whole world Micheal. I’m so excited that I get to spend the rest of my life with her.”
Suddenly the sound of the the acoustic version of Shelter by The Talbott Brothers started playing, and Jack felt his stomach tighten with anticipation as he turned to see Y/N come down the aisle. His heart felt like it was going to explode when he saw her. She was wearing an off the shoulder dress with lace flower details and a flowing skirt. She wanted something that had a very boho vibe to it and her hair was down and curled lightly. Jack’s favorite way she ever wore her hair. Around her neck, she wore Jack’s dogtags along with the infinity knot necklace he bought her for their one year anniversary of them dating. On her finger she wore her moss agate engagement ring.
Jack cleared his throat fighting back tears as he watched Dana walk arm and arm with Y/N.
“Hi baby.” She smiled as she she reached him her hand quickly finding it’s rightful place within his.
“Hi,” He said his voice cracking.
“Oh Jack, you said you weren’t going to cry, you are going to make me cry.” Y/N laughed reaching out and wiping away the tear that fell down his cheek.
“You look so beautiful.” He smiled.
“Thank you,” She beamed.
The ceremony was short and sweet but he couldn’t ask for a more perfect day.
“You may now kiss the bride.” The officiant said and Jack didn’t wait a moment to pull his new bride into his arms and pull her into a long kiss.
“I love you Y/N.” He whispered.
“I love you too Jack, so much.”
They had decided to keep their ceremony small, but the reception was where the party was going to be. That was where the entire staff of the Pitt were waiting for them and where the alcohol and fun would really be flowing.
Jack and Y/N had also decided that they wanted to be less traditional when it came to their first dance. Instead they waited until the end of the evening when the celebration was wrapping up.
“How are you doing this fine evening Dr. Abbott?” Y/N smiled as they danced together to their song Wondeful Tonight by Eric Clapton.
“I am beyond happy, what are about you Dr. Abbott?” Jack loved the sound of calling Y/N Dr. Abbott.
“Incandescently happy. Today could not have been more perfect.”
“Y/N,” Jack said his emotions taking over. “Every day with you is going to be perfect. I know I don’t deserve you but thank you so much for choosing me.”
“Jack Abbott you self deprecating little asshole,” Y/N teased. “You deserve the absolute world and I hope that I can provide you as much happiness as possible. I love you more than anything and I can’t wait to see our future together.”
He pulled her in for a long kiss again as they swayed together holding each other tightly.
He could feel his eyes filling up with tears, he wouldn’t lose her.
“There is an entire squad of police waiting outside for you.” He blurted out and Robby and Dana turned to look at him horrified.
“What!” Driscoll snapped. “I told you no police or I would kill her!”
“Did you actual believe that we wouldn’t call the police. You shut down an entire Emergency Department. You can’t seriously think that the police weren’t going to get involved.” He snapped as he inched forward making sure to keep his hands up and visible. “But I will get you out of here, without the police ever seeing you. Under the condition that you let Y/N go.”
“You would switch places with her?”
“I would die for her if I have to.”
“Jack,” Y/N let out a cry. She was exhausted emotionally and physically, her head was ringing from the injury and her mind was spinning from everything that was happening.
“I have an alternative plan.” Driscoll said. “I keep Y/N here with me, insuring that the police don’t kill me. And she stays with me until I can get someone and get hidden. Or maybe I’ll just keep her.” He sneered and Jack felt like he was going to vomit.
“Don’t you get it, you piece of shit. I’m not letting you take her anywhere.” Jack snapped his eyes darkening. “You either take me up on my offer, or I put you in a body bag.”
“You are going to threaten me right now. Are you stupid?”
“I was an army doctor. And I work night shift in the ER. I don’t crack under pressure. I’m meticulous and I have incredible patience. How are you going to feel in 2 hours let’s say, when you are hungry, thirsty, or have to take a piss. You think you are going to be thinking clearly. Not a chance. And that’s when I will best you. And I’ll claim it was self-defense.”
The room went deathly quiet. The look on Jack’s face was absolutely terrified. Y/N had never seen him look so angry. He looked like a whole different person.
Y/N could feel Driscoll grip on her start to relax, as his hands started to shake. The reality of the whole situation finally hitting him. Y/N took her chance and pushed herself away from Driscoll lunging for Jack.
Everything seemed to slow, and Jack watched Y/N push away from Driscoll and he quickly reached his arms out to her ready to grab her up and pull her into himself protectively. But he could see Driscoll turn the gun and point it at Y/N’s back. Suddenly a gunshot went off and Y/N’s back arced as she fell into Jack’s arms.
“No, no!” Jack screamed as he could feel the warm blood on his arms. “Y/N!”
“I love you, I love you, I love you.” Y/N kept repeating her eyes filling with fear as she stared up at her husbands face. She just kept repeating it as blood filled her mouth.
“I didn’t… oh shit I…” Driscoll panicked as he watched the police start to rush in. “I’m sorry.” He said as he turned the gun on himself and fired.

Trigger Warning: Violence against women. Our boy is stressed.
“Robby,” A voice called and Robby turned to see Jack rushing into the room. “Where is she?”
“Jack,” Robby quickly grabbed Abbott by his shoulders. “I need you to take a breath. You cannot come in here guns blazing ok. Right now, we need to figure out a plan.”
“How long has she been in there with that fuck.” Jack growled.
“Only about 10 minutes.” Dana said as she came up and put her hand on Jack’s back. “I got a glimpse when I was moving some patients. She looks good Jack, she seems calm.”
“Dr. Robinavitch.” A voice said called. And the trio turned to see Gloria coming in. “Did I hear correctly, do we have a doctor held hostage?”
Robby sighed grabbing onto his stethoscope and pulling on it. “Yes, I was in the process of getting our other patients and staff safe, then I was going to call you.”
“Have you called the police?” Her eyes darted to Jack with a questioning look. “Dr. Abbott, what are you doing here.”
Jack opened his mouth to speak but Robby quickly cut in.
“It’s Dr Y/N Abbott who has been taken hostage.” Robby said.
“Shit,” Gloria sighed. “Ok well, I am going to call the police we need…”
“He said if you call the police he will kill her. You can’t call them.”
“Jack I understand you are scared but we can’t let…”
“I’m more than just scared Gloria, I’m livid. This shouldn’t have happened. Robby and I have been asking, no begging you for more security. And now my wife is trapped in a room with a crazy man whose threatening her life.”
“We can have this discussion later. Right now we are going to get the police involved. They will know how to handle this situation and make it so Y/N gets out safe.”
“I need an Echo machine.” Y/N voice called out.
“I’ve got it.” Jack called as he gave Gloria one last glare before he went to grab the machines.
“Robby, you know how Abbott is, we can’t have him here right now, we need to get him out of the room.” Gloria said.
“Gloria, we both know there is no way I’m going to be able get Jack out of here. At least not without Y/N by his side.”
Gloria sighed. “Just make sure he doesn’t do anything stupid. I’m going to talk with the police figuring out what the best course of action is.”
As Gloria left, Dana and Robby watched as Jack threw on some scrubs as he made his way over to the room with the Echo.
“Here you are Doctor Abbott.” He said as he greeted Y/N at the door, his eyes darting between her eyes and the man who stood next to her the gun digging into the side of her head.
“Thank you.” She smiled her eyes filling with tears when she saw Jack.
As Jack passed off the machine, their hands brushed and Jack fought his instinct to just grab her hand and pull him to safety.
“Alright let’s get back to it.” Driscoll snapped as started to pull Y/N back.
Y/N mouthed I love you before she turned back to Driscoll.
Jack stormed away heading back to Robby and Dana.
“What are we going to do?” Jack said his whole body was shaking. He hated that he couldn’t do anything. He needed to have a task or he was going to go insane.
“Gloria is calling the police.” Robby sighed.
“What!” Jack snapped. “That could get Y/N killed we…”
“Jack, we can’t do anything. We aren’t equipped to handle this. And you know that you aren’t thinking straight right now. The police will know what is best to do. They will help Y/N.”
Jack sighed as he ran his hands through his hair. He knew Robby was right.
After 15 agonizing minutes Gloria returned. “I have talked with the hostage team, they are going to stay outside but will move in if things turn bad.”
Jack let out a dry laugh. “So we are just going to wait.”
“Doug Driscoll has no priors, the police are confident that once he gets what he wants, he will let Y/N go.”
“And what happens if the tests that Y/N is performing turn out bad. What if he get’s bad news. Do you think he isn’t going to get a little emotional. And can you confidnetly tell me he won’t take that emotion out on my wife!” Jack screamed.
“Jack I think you need to take a walk.” Robby said. As he placed his hand on his friends back and started to walk towards the trauma bay.
“I can’t deal with her.” He growled. “She doesn’t give a shit about anything but her fucking money.”
“Jack, I know you are terrified right now. But blowing up on Gloria, while hilarious, isn’t going to help anything. Y/N is smart. And she is a fucking badass, she’s not going to let this bastard do anything to take her away from you ok.”
“I’m surprised she hasn’t kicked his ass already.” Jack joked slightly.
“Oh just wait until he let’s his guard down, that fucker won’t know what hit him.” Robby laughed and the two laughed today. And for the first time since he got there Jack felt like he could breath slightly.
“Never a dull day in the Pitt.” He sighed.
“So a kid huh,” Robby said changing the subject. “How are you feeling about that?”
“Honestly more excited than I ever thought I would.” Jack beamed. “You know how she told me. She bought Coop a bandana that said big brother.” Coopers was Jack and Y/N geriatric black lap.
“How far along is she?”
“About 8 weeks.” Jack sighed and the fear started to set back in. “I tried to convince her to stop working. I was worried the stress wouldn’t be good for the baby.”
“Jack, you and I both know Y/N is going to be working until she is ready to pop. And she is far too good at her job for us to lose her.” Robby smiled.
“I’m really hoping its a girl.” Jack smiled. “I just think having a mini Y/N running around will be the greatest thing.”
“Oh you won’t stand a chance if it’s a girl, Y/N already has you wrapped around her finger, and if you have a girl, you will be completely outnumbered.” Robby teasaed.
“That sounds like heaven brother I can’t lie.”
“I’m happy for you man.” Robby smiled.
“Jack,” Dana said popping in. “Y/N just called for an EKG.”
“I’m on it.” Jack said as he rushed to gather everything he needed. He also grabbed his pocket knife and hid it in his pocket, hoping he might find an opportunity to get Y/N out.
As he got to the door he found Y/N waiting with Driscoll still behind her.
“Dr. Abbott here says that she needs two people to do this EKG that I need, is that correct?” He snapped and Y/N locked eyes with Jack.
“Yes, you need two people to run the machines.” Jack lied.
“Alright, well come on in then, but no funny business.”
Jack just nodded as he walked into the room.
“Are you a doctor?” Driscoll asked as the two of them worked on setting up the EKG.
“Yes, I’m Doctor Y/L/N.” Jack said not risking saying that he and Y/N were married in case it set him off.
“Good. I don’t want any nurses not after having waited for so long to get seen.”
“Mr. Driscoll was complaining of chest pains, he is concerned that he may have had a heart attack.” Y/N said as she stood on one side of Driscoll attaching the nodes. “Nothing showed up on the Echo. But we want to get as many tests as possible.”
“All I want is to get the care that I deserve.” Driscoll snapped moving the gun from pointing at Y/N’s head to pointing at her stomach.
“Hey!” Jack snapped before he even could stop himself. Y/N looked at Jack eyes wide and Driscoll just smiled smugly moving the gun back to Y/N’s head.
“You got a problem with what’s going on? Huh tough guy.”
“If you want to get the care you deserve, I’m your guy. I’m the Senior Attending. I outrank Doctor Y/N.”
“Jack, don’t.” Y/N snapped.
“Well then you should have volunteered buddy. Doctor Abbott here took one for the team, and I’m sticking with her. And I hate to break it to you, she’s a lot easier on the eyes than you are.”
Jack fought back a growl and he stuck his hand in his pocket wrapping his hand around his pocket knife, opening it in his pocket.
“Hey!” Driscoll screamed as he pointed the gun at Jack, “What do you have in pocket!”
Y/N took the opportunity to lunge for the gun but Driscoll was fasted and he slammed the butt of the gun into the side of Y/N’s head.
“Don’t fucking touch her!” Jack roared.
“Hands up! Let me see you hands!” Driscoll screamed as he grabbed Y/N by the back of her neck roughly and shoved the barrel of the gun roughly into the area where he just hit her, causing her to yelp in pain. “Get your hands out of your fucking pockets or I will fucking shoot her.”
Jack threw his hands up quickly. “They are out! Jesus, I have nothing in my pockets!” He looked at Y/N and could see the blood coming down from her temple, and she had tears streaming down her face. “Please just let her go.” He pleaded, his voice cracking.

The aftermath of Pittfest hit you hard. Never in your life had you imagined you’d find yourself in that scenario. The screams of the wounded, the smell of metal as blood poured from gunshot wounds and pooled at your feet, and then silence. When you walked out of The Pitt that night into a world that kept on spinning, it felt like a punch in the gut. The air was cool and crisp yet you struggled to take a breath. Before you knew it, your head was in the nearest trash can, Jack holding your hair and rubbing your back in soft circles.
“I got you. You’re safe.” Your husband assured you as your stomach revolted against you. Jack had been to war. He had seen the carnage on the battlefield, the worst man had to offer. Hell, his own caravan had be hit by an IED leaving him with a prosthetic. To him- tonight, this was nothing more than a Friday. But to you… well that didn’t happen here. That didn’t happen in Pittsburgh. Not the place you loved. Not the place you want to raise a family.
The drive home was quiet. Jack turned his police scanner off when you jumped at sound of radio chatter. The sound of his truck engine was drowned out by constant ringing in your ear. Jack glanced over at you, to find you almost shell shocked. Your eyes were wide but glazed over, your hands trembled in your lap, and his heart was breaking at the mere sight of you. He kept quiet though, knowing you weren’t in any frame of mind to discuss anything beyond who would shower first- which he already decided would be you.
He helped you out of the truck, stopped you before shutting the door.
“I love you.” He grabbed your arm, giving a squeeze. You didn’t answer. Not that you didn’t reciprocate those feelings, but you didn’t exactly know what you felt in the moment. You were completely numb, and he didn’t take it personally. You walked up the sidewalk into the house you two had just bought not long ago. The walls were still bare and it lacked the warmth you planned to give it. The place felt sterile, just like the hospital you just wanted to escape from.
He ran your shower without saying a word and helped you undress from your bloody scrubs. For the first time, he undressed you in a way that wasn’t sexual. There was no hunger. There was no desire. Just gentle precision and care. As you showered he brewed you a cup of tea and laid out some pajamas on the bed. He picked out one of his old Army t-shirts, the one you love to wear because you say it smells like him- no matter how many times it’s washed.
You two laid together that night. The adrenaline still high. The gravity and weight of the situation still not totally hitting you. You couldn’t cry, as much as you wanted to. He kept his arm wrapped around you, resting his hand on your hip. “I love you.” He told you again. This time you answered.
“I love you too, Jack.”
The weeks that followed were tumultuous. You took the role that once belonged to Jack and found yourself waking up each night in a panicked frenzy. Each night Jack talking you down from your own head and lulled you back to sleep. You looked exhausted. Your eyes were sunken and grey, just like the walls of your home that still remained bare. Jack tried to his best to bring you back to life again.
“We should hang one of our wedding photos above that fireplace.” He suggested one morning after coming home from a long shift. You had taken time off from work. You didn’t have it in you to go back. He hates leaving you alone, but you didn’t let him take time off, knowing he’d go stir crazy at home.
“Yeah that would be nice.” You replied solemnly on your already third cup of coffee. The nights Jack was gone were the hardest. Waking up to find his spot in bed empty, it was impossible to fall back asleep.
———————————————————————
When Jack came home one morning to find a picture hanging in the kitchen, he smiled. It was small, just some watercolor painting of fruit, but it was you.
He looked for signs. He tried pulling you out of your slump. He suggested morning walks together, no matter how grueling of a shift he just had. No matter how badly he wanted to take off his prosthetic and put his leg up. He'd watch you, the way the morning sun illuminated your face.
It started subtly.
"Those flowers are pretty," you pointed to an azalea bush on one of your neighbors gardens, "I always like azaleas. It's a shame, our house gets too much sun. They need shade."
"Since when did you know anything about gardening?" Jack asked, raising his brow. You always had a little hobby on your nightstand to calm your mind, one month was crossword puzzles, another was knitting needles, but you never mentioned you had any interest in gardening.
"I always liked gardening. I just takes a lot of time I dont have. My grandfather had a huge vegetable garden I used to help him tend to." you shrugged and started listing off flowers you loved. Dalias, poppies, peonies, hydrangeas, ranunculus, allium, geranium, petunias, portulaca. The list went on and on as you told him about all the different flowers. It was all foreign language to him, he had a better understanding of Latin than whatever you were going on about. But it was the first time in weeks he saw a spark in your eyes again.
Next he found your laptop left open on the bed as you showered. You had beens scrolling Pinterest, looking at different gardens and green houses. He smiled and snapped a few photos of the screen with his phone before climbing into bed to get a few hours before his shift.
When he came home the next morning he came holding a little bouquet of flowers. You were already up, making him some breakfast.
"Hi Ja- what are these?" your eyes instantly lit up at bouquet in his hands.
"I stopped and got these on my way home, you said you like pee pees or whatever these are called." he kissed your cheek.
"Peonies Jack. Peonies." you belly laughed and kissed him back. "And they're beautiful. Thank you, baby." you interlaced your fingers for a moment as you admired the flowers. "Now go shower, you stink."
When Jack came back to the kitchen no longer smelling of urine and other bodily fluids, he sat down at the table.
"I booked a trip."
"What?" you asked him inquisitively. "Where are we going?"
"Not we, you. I booked you a few days at The Lodge at Woodloch. Its a bit of a drive but they have some spas, horseback riding, hiking, and lots of gardening classes. We were slow last night and I had time to look at everything. You leave tomorrow."
Your mouth hung open and your stomach churned. What was it you were feeling? Could that have been excitement? You wanted to argue but he seemed so happy. Plus, he had been putting so much time in lately to make you feel yourself again- you figured maybe he needed a break too. You agreed and began to pack until you looked at the price, $1,200 a night? You didnt care he was sleeping soundly, you barged into the bedroom and flipped the light on.
"Jack, have you lost your mind?" he shot up dazed and confused, waiting for his eyes to adjust to the light.
"What? What happened?" he said in a tired panic.
"The price of this fucking hotel, are you insane? $1,200?" you both were pretty modest with your money despite living more than comfortably on two doctors salaries. You both preferred to save your money, plus you two were always too busy to spend it anyway.
"Baby, just let me do something nice for you. We have the money. Now can I go back to bed?"
"No, you cant." you argued, sitting at the edge of the bed, "I cant believe you would spend that much money without talking to me first."
"That would defeat the purpose of a surprise." he glanced over at the clock, 12:03 pm. He had only been asleep for about 2 hours.
"Jack..."
He grabbed your arm and pulled you up towards his chest. He buried his nose into your hair, smelling your rose scented shampoo. "Baby... you deserve this. I wanted to do this for you. I just want you to be happy." He rested his head against the headboard, his eyes fighting to stay awake. "Plus its nonrefundable. Now can I go back to sleep?"
You looked his face. His eyes were bloodshot and puffy, his skin was slightly pale. Brushing your hand along his cheek you kissed him tenderly.
"You're a pain in my ass, you know that?"
"And yet I remember you accepting my engagement before I could even get down on one knee."
"Because I love you."
"I love you. Now please. Enjoy yourself, yeah?"
"Yeah..."
"Now will you get the fuck out so I can sleep?"
The next morning you kissed him goodbye and made your way towards your all inclusive resort. But that was just the start of the surprise, and where Jacks project had just begun. Remember those photos he took from your Pinterest board? He spent all his free time writing plans, researching all those strange flower names, the best dirt to use, how much sun the backyard got. With his plans in hand, he got to work. As you were in the middle of your massage, Jack spent the first of his many hours garage, cutting and staining wood. You were right, although the massage felt heavenly, no one knew your body as well as Jack.
You'd occasionally send him a text massage with photos of your trip. He opened his phone to a photo of the floral arrangement you made.
"I added some pee pees in there just for you." you sent with a winky face, making fun of the fact he can never remember the name Peony. It made him smile.
"It's beautiful. When you get home I'll have another pee pee for you."
Hours later his hands ached, covered in splinters but he did not stop. Another text message.
"Making infused oils with stuff from the farm. Made this garlic rosemary infused oil. Cant wait to cook something for you with it. <3"
"Sounds Delicious"
"Going Hiking"
"Be careful, text me when you're back. I love you."
A selfie of you with a horse
“Her name is Petunia.”
“Beautiful… you aren’t so bad either.” He was such a sarcastic little shit.
Your 5 days of pure bliss had come to an end and you pulled into the driveway to find Jack sitting on the porch, covered in dirt and sweat. You looked amazing. Your skin had a sun kissed glow from your time outside, eyes sparkling with a glint of hope, hope that you’ve begun to heal.
“What’s all this? Have you been working outside?” You asked, wrapping your arms around his sweaty frame.
“Just a bit.” He smirked. If only you knew. Only knew how many hours he had spent working while you were gone. His body ached, his arms felt like jello, but a part of him came back to life with you in his arms, kissing you. You smelled like pine and citrus. “I have a surprise for you.”
“What?” You lifted your head from his chest. He lead you through the house, covering your eyes and guiding you towards the back door.
“Okay… you can open your eyes”, you heard the latch of the door and your eyes shot open, your breath hitched in your throat. The backyard had been completely transformed into a gardening oasis. Beautiful raised garden beds with cobblestone paths between them. Two greenhouses stood in the corner with ample shelving and pots full of seeds. The smell of the flowers filled your nose as you took a step forward, your mouth hung open in complete disbelief.
“I uh… I was reading that marigolds help keep pests away from fruits and vegetables. I got some of those over here.” He pointed to some of the pallets of flowers that still needed to planted. The thought of him researching all of this for you, when you thought he didn’t care. When you thought he wasn’t really listening. That whole time he was taking notes, reading articles, and asking people at the store for help. The whole time he’s been working day in and day out building your own sanctuary. You looked at him, he was nervously rubbing his hand on his neck. But there was a sense of pride of his face. He liked working with his hands. He liked creating. He liked creating for you.
“Jack…” you whispered, your eyes were full of tears as you walked around and took in everything, trying to find the words. He didn’t miss or skimp on any detail, I guess being a doctor helps. He hung lights, he even built his own irrigation system.
“Do you like it?” He finally asked, your silence was deafening.
“Jack… yes…” you choked, your voice shaking. “I love it. I don’t know what else to say… I-I-…it’s perfect.”
He came up behind you, looping his arms around your waist, resting his chin on your shoulder.
“You’re perfect. You’re my world. And you deserve the world. My little wildflower.”
You picked up a pair of garden gloves from the table and got to work, a smile never leaving your face.

Trigger Warnings: Talk of Mugging, talk of injuries and blood.
“Alright, that’s it for me.” Robby said. As he stood up her eyes couldn’t help but be drawn to him.
“Beer for the Road?” Abbott asked.
“Yeah, why not.” Robby replied as Donnie threw him another beer. “Goodnight,” He said to Dr. Mohan, “Get some rest,” He looked at Javadi. And then his eyes locked with Y/N’s. She could feel the blood rush to her cheeks. Her body always had an involuntary reaction when it came to Robby. “Tomorrow is another day.”
Y/N waved as Robby walked off, her eyes trailing after him as he disappeared into the darkness of the park.
“You should go after him. Lord knows he could use some stress relief tonight.” Abbott whispered.
“Jack!” Y/N gasped as she smacked him hard in the arm.
“What! You have been pining over Robby for years now, when are you going to make a move.”
Jack had been Y/N’s best friend for as long as she had lived in Pittsburgh. They worked the nightshift together and they bonded quickly. When they were on shift together, it felt as though they could communicate telepathically. He always knew when she needed a break, and she would beat him to the roof after a patient loss hit him hard. So when she started covering some day shifts, and began to develop feelings for a certain Chief Attending, who just happened to be one of Jack’s closest friends he knew instantly. He also knew that Robby felt something similar.
Dana and Jack had been trying to set them up for years, but everytime they broached the subjects both Y/N and Robby would have an excuse of why they wouldn’t never work as a couple.
“I do not pine over him!” Y/N whispered, grateful that the rest of the group was preoccupied in their own conversation.
“You were making puppy dog eyes at him Y/N.” Jack teased. “You two are impossible, it’s like watching a soap opera I swear to God.”
“Oh and you and Dana’s matchmaking isn’t pulled straight from a 90’s teen drama.” Y/N snapped back as she started to gather up her items.
“Well don’t storm off like a toddler.”
“Oh don’t give yourself that much credit Dr. Abbott, you are not the reason I’m leaving. I am craving a shower, I feel disgusting.” Y/N laughed.
“Do you want me to walk you home?” He asked as he started to put his prosthetic back on.
“No, I’m totally fine. Plus didn’t you say you are coming back around 2. If you walk me back you won’t be able to get any sleep.” She reached out and pulled him into a hug. “Are you going to be ok?”
“Yeah I’ll be fine. What a hell of a way to spend our day off huh.” He teased but she could see how tired his eyes were.
“Try to get some sleep, I’ll see you tomorrow.” She said as she stood up waving goodbye to everyone.
“Y/N.” Jack called as she started to walk away. “Do you still have that pepper spray I gave you.”
Y/N laughed. “You are impossible Jack I swear to God. Yes I still have it. I will be fine.”
“Ok well text me when you get home.”
“Yes Dad!” She teased flipping him off as she started to walk home.
Y/N’s walk to and from work were probably her favorite part of the day it gave her time to think and either decompress from a shift, or mentally prepare herself for a new one. She had just popped in one of her headphones when she felt something sharp at her back and a hand wrapped around her chest.
“Give me your purse and phone.” The voice said her in ear.
Y/N screamed both from surprise, and in hopes that someone was around to hear her.
“You bitch!” He screamed as he put his hand over her mouth. However the minute he did that she took the opportunity to bite his hand. With this shock she also added a stomp to the guys foot and an elbow to the face. “Fuck!” The guy screamed as she started to run away. He lunged at her and she felt a sharp pain across her forearm.
“Hey!” A voice called and both Y/N and the man froze. She recognized that voice. She would recognize that voice anywhere. “Get the fuck away from her!” Robby bellowed and the man only had to take a moment to take in the full six foot one figure before he bolted.
“Micheal,” She sighed tears forming. Y/N barely had time to blink before Robby was in front of her his strong hands grabbing her arms looking her up and down checking for any life threatening injuries.
“Are you hurt?” He asked his eyes filled with concern.
Y/N held up her forearm her jacket sleeve already soaked with blood. “I think he had a knife.”
“Jesus. Ok let’s get you back to the hospital we can…” He started his hand falling on the small of her back.
“No, please.” Her plead came out more like a sob as the adrenaline of the ordeal started to wear off and the terror and fear she felt set in. “I don’t… I don’t want to go back to the hospital, not after everything that happened today. I just want to go home. I have a suture kit, I can patch myself back up.”
“Isn’t that your dominate hand?” Robby said.
“Fuck,” Y/N sighed and then she began to cry.
“Hey, hey, it’s ok.” Robby soothed pulling her into his arms. “Listen I have a suture kit at my place to. We can head back there.”
“No, it’s fine, really I don’t want to put you out.”
“Y/N, I’m not going to leave you standing in a park bleeding. Now it’s either my place or we go back to the Pitt.”
“Ok,” Y/N squeaked and as she pulled away from Robby’s embrace, she used her good hand to apply pressure to the injury.
The whole walk to Robby’s apartment they walked in silence. His hand still hovered over the small of her back. All he wanted to do was pull her into his arms and never let her go. The sound of her scream still echoed in his head. He couldn’t help but think about what could have happened, if he hadn’t stopped. If he had just walked straight home. Robby shuttered at the thoguht as he led Y/N up the stairs and into his apartment.
“This is me.” He said awkwardly opening the door. “Have a seat on the couch.”
Y/N just nodded as she took in the scene before her. Robby’s apartment was exactly how she thought it would be. Sparse but what furniture and trinkets he did have clearly meant something to him. She could see the photos of Robby and Jake on the mantel. Another picture of a woman who Y/N thought was probably Robby’s grandmother. She couldn’t help but feel like she was seeing a private part of Robby that only a select group of people got to see. At this should couldn’t help but smile.
“Let me see what we are working with here.” Robby said, as he pulled the coffee table up closer so he could sit in front of her. He watched as she winced in pain as she gingerly took her jacket off. Along the outside of her forearm was a nasty gash, nothing some quick stitches wouldn’t fix. But just seeing the pain she was in, made him think he should head back to that park and track the fucker down. “This is going to hurt.” He said and Y/N couldn’t help but laugh.
“Why Doctor Robby, I think we need to work on your bedside manner.”
Robby couldn’t help but smile, her laugh was infectious. Whenever they worked on the same shift, which was rare, he went out of his way to try to hear that laugh. He could be having the worst day imaginable, and that laugh could brighten his whole attitude.
“I think they honesty is the best medicine.”
“The people who came up with that, have never been honest a day in their life.” Y/N winced as Robby started to sew her up.
They stayed silent again for a while, before Y/N spoke again her eyes never leaving Robby.
“How did you hear me in the park? I thought you were well enough ahead of me?”
“I uh… I had stopped, found another bench and was just sitting, thinking. Trying to forget about everything that happened today.” He said finishing up the last stitch.
With her good hand she brought it up to land on his bicep. “I’m so sorry Micheal. I know you tried so hard to save Leah. There was nothing you could have done.”
Robby could feel the tears start to build up again as he looked at her. Her eyes were soft, even after everything she had seen that day, Robby could see it didn’t harden her. There was still hope and light behind her eyes, and that thought shattered him.
“I should have…” He started his voice cracking.
“Hey,” She snapped her hand now moving up to his cheek. “Don’t you dare do that. You have always told me that we can never play the woulda, shoulda, coulda game. It will drive you insane if you do. “You were everyones rock down there. We only lost 6 patients Micheal. Six out of over one hundred. Do you know how amazing that is? And I can promise you everyone down there will attribute that to you.”
“But I wasn’t there for everyone, I broke, I had a breakdown Y/N.”
“For what 40 seconds?” Y/N asked and Robby couldn’t help but smile as she mirrored the words Jack had said to him earlier. “After we had finally gotten everything calmed down, I vomited and then hid in the bathroom for 10 minutes. You are allowed to feel things Micheal, you are allowed to break. What maters isn’t that you broke, it’s that you got back up.”
Robby stared at her, really taking her in, even after a full day of work, handling a mass shooting, and almost getting mugged, he still thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world.
“Can I kiss you.” Robby said and he watched as Y/N’s face turned a light shade of pink.
“I… uh…” She stumbled over her words.”Y…Yes.” She said and Robby slowly leaned in placing his lips on hers.
It started off as a soft and sweet kiss, the two of them cautious seeing how it would go. But as they became more comfortable, it became more passionate, more desperate, needing to find connection with one another. After everything that happened they needed to forget about everything else around them, and get lost in one another.
Robby’s hands found her waist as he pulled her slightly closer to her.
“Y/N” He sighed as her fingers twisted into his hair.
“Micheal, I need you.” Y/N whimpered. “Make me forget.”
In an instant he pulled her fully into his lap, her legs wrapping around his waist, as he lifted her before laying her back down on the couch.
They made out for a while their hands exploring one another, holding each other tightly.
“Oh shit,” She said as she pushed Robby back just slightly but the minute she did Robby instantly sat up, his eyes wide.
“Are you ok? Was that too much?” He asked panicked.
Y/N smiled as she grabbed his hand. “No, not too much.” Quickly she pulled her phone out seeing that she had multiple texts and calls from Jack. “I forgot to text Jack, he probably thinks I’m dead. Do you care if I call him?”
Robby laughed. “If you don’t he is probably going to end up showing up here.”
She had barely pushed the call button before Jack picked up.
“Are you ok, you didn’t answer any of my texts or calls.” He said in a full panic.
“I’m so sorry I…” She contemplated not telling about the attack, but she knew that she wouldn’t be able to hide it from him at work. “I almost got mugged.”
“What!” Y/N had to hold the phone away from her ear with how loud Jack yelled. “Are you ok, I’m coming over.”
“No, wait I’m not home, Robby was still in the park, he uh… he saved me.”
There was silence for a moment, before Jack spoke again. “So you are at Robby’s place.”
“Yes, and he is looking at me laughing because he can hear this whole conversation.”
“Well I guess I will let you get back to it.” He laughed and Y/N could almost see his smug face.
“You are the worst human.” Y/N sighed her face flushing pink again.
“Be safe Y/N.” He teased as he hung up.
“You know he is going to call Dana now.” Robby laughed.
“We are never going to live this down. We will be the talk of the Pitt.” Y/N sighed but her face was still beaming with a smile.
“Who says I care.” Robby said in almost a growl as he leaned forward kissing her again. As they broke apart, Robby held Y/N’s face in his hands. “Y/N I really like you, I have for a while.”
“I like you too.” Y/N smiled.
“Will you stay the night. I don’t want to be alone tonight.” He pleaded.
Y/N pulled him in for another long kiss as she intertwined her fingers with his. “You took care of all of us today. Let me take care of you tonight.” She whispered in his ear.
Instantly Robby was on his feet holding Y/N who was still wrapped around his waist as he started to make his way back to the bedroom.
“Micheal your back.” Y/N laughed kissing his neck.
“Worth it.” He growled back as they disappeared into the bedroom, and they disappeared into each others embrace.
