And yet, the truth is, while there is an exaggerated version currently on display, this is simply a reflection of how New York lives generally: out loud and together. (Which is obviously not the same as harmoniously.) When I read people saying things like, “don’t tell me this city doesn’t have spirit” I think, what city are you referring to? Of the things New York struggles with, lack of spirit never comes into the mix. New York is always like this to some degree. The perception it’s not, I think, is rooted in some version of the city that culturally took hold during the bleak years of the seventies but hasn’t actually been true in decades. New York is forever coming together even in small ways — have you ever experienced a tourist asking for directions on the 6 train during rush hour? It’s practically a Broadway chorus.

But I think the real reason the idea of New York travels is simple: it is the most human of places. And this makes it universal. It is a metropolis, the whole world, and a small town rolled into one.

In this regard, it is similar to many high density, walking cities. I often come home through Paris at night, for instance, past cafés showing sports events to local cheering crowds congregated in front of a screen on the sidewalk. I felt it in Marrakesh when I was there. In Roma. Definitely in Naples. When you shove people up against one another you eliminate the space that in other places is taken up by cars, and screens, and whatever other buffer technology has created to “connect” us but is actually making us more isolated and less human by the minute. It’s simply writ larger here.

The videos emerging from the streets around the five boroughs are so thrilling because they are evidence of real life, of the joy communion makes possible. We are, all of us, starved for human connection, yes, but also reality. To be completely in the real world even when it’s overwhelming (I got stuck in Times Square the other day during an impromptu Madonna concert and believe me I wanted a lot less reality). I’ve felt similar levels of aliveness in the most remote parts of Wyoming, where instead of human nature you get mother nature. It is the experience of being fully present. There’s just a higher concentration of people doing it here at the exact same time. Currently about the same thing.

And I think that the easiest life I have found has been on the outside of Eden, living in the places they told you were bad and told you were ugly and hard. It's the life of Lilith, the one people say is a demon. The most joyful life is the life of the cast out and the renegades. The one you build, brick by brick, on your own terms. Not fulfilling a fantasy. Not building a castle for other people to admire, but an honest-to-god, jailbreak, Shawshank Redemption on the outside. To be the cousin everyone says is a little too wild. The chain-smoking aunt standing in the alley behind the wedding reception.
