DETECTIVES a tensei iida + rooftop squad oneshot
warnings: set during their ua years, mainly told from oboro’s pov (sorry i love him and it shows), fem!reader, oboro being a little genius, “secret” relationship, use of y/n, fluff + crack

it started with the way you immediately dropped everything to listen to him.
you were sitting in your usual seat behind oboro and talking to him about the cat he picked up, when tensei iida shushed everyone for class to start. now, before this point, you usually would’ve continued your conversation, just in a whisper instead. you always had to finish the conversation first before you honed in on what you were supposed to be doing that day.
however, this time you immediately shut up. you started to listen intently to what iida had to say. oboro raised a brow. he knew this behavior wasn’t super weird seeing as you had always respected the class rep. but the way you listened and nodded along when nobody else had paid any mind to him? yeah, there was something fishy going on. and with oboro being oboro, he had to get to the bottom of it.
he looked around to see if anybody noticed this weird behavior. he looked to the side to shouta, but he had his head down with no care in the world about iida or even the professor. oboro scratched him off the list.
he then looked towards hizashi, who was doodling on the desk and not paying attention in the slightest, letting out hums of satisfaction at the drawings.
oboro bookmarked this interaction in his mind to hopefully tell them (and nemuri) about what he saw while they weren’t paying attention. (or, in nemuri’s case, a grade above and not in any of their classes.)
the next day, you came down with something and weren’t at school. the whole squad was bummed out and lacked their usual enthusiasm. instead of talking when iida quieted everyone, they zoned out. not oboro, though. he watched iida like he could read him like his favorite manga that he always talked about with you, like he was trying his best to figure out what was happening with his best friend.
but that’s when iida’s eyes swept over your empty seat. and oboro swore he saw a small frown and disappointment shine in his eyes.
it was in this moment that oboro knew something was up.
lunch that day was a little less boring than the rest of their classes had been, thanks to nemuri.
“-and that bitch has the audacity to say ‘sorry, kayama’ with the most sickeningly sweet smile like she hadn’t meant to kick my bag!” nemuri huffed, complaining about something her ‘enemy’ did, per usual.
when silence had followed afterwards due to food-filled mouths, oboro let slip what he had been seeing.
“i’m not the only one who has noticed something going on with y/n, right?”
everyone else looked up at him slightly curious.
oboro sighed, “apparently, i am. well, y/n has been actually paying attention to iida recently. part of me thought that it was weird but i brushed it off because she had always respected him. but! i saw iida look almost sad that y/n wasn’t here today…”
nemuri’s eyes went wide, “no way! what if she has a crush on iida?” nemuri fake-fainted on oboro, “oh tensei, my love!” she stroked oboro’s chin with a laugh.
oboro chuckled with a slight flush before hizashi said, “we HAVE to get to the bottom of this!” he fist pumped.
“or we could leave it alone. it is her business,” shouta deadpanned, even though he secretly wanted to know.
everyone promptly ignored him and proceeded to make a plan to keep a watch on them. shouta could only sigh.
you reappeared in your seat the next morning, and oboro and hizashi could have cheered upon seeing you. they were stopped, though, when they saw iida standing by your desk with a smile.
“are you feeing any better?” iida asked, same kind tone with the same kind smile.
“yes, i am! thanks for the soup, tensei. it meant a lot that you would bring me some. how could i ever repay you?” you responded with a grin of your own.
oboro and hizashi looked at each other with a comical wide-eyed-and-wide-mouth look.
“first name?” hizashi whisper yelled.
they heard iida laugh and say, “it’s really no problem. there’s no need to repay me, i just wanted to make sure you were okay.”
“what are you two doing?” shouta said from behind them causing them to jump four feet into the air. the two only laughed before dragging their feet (and shouta) to their seats.
they expected your usual greeting when they sat down, just to get nothing besides you talking to iida still. iida was now sitting in the desk beside you while talking, even though his actual desk was towards the front.
the three glanced at each other. they would have to let nemuri know what happened.
the day had come and gone, meaning that it was time to leave. everyone began packing their stuff up while talking excitedly about their plans for the weekend.
hizashi was just talking about having a sleepover when he looked over at you. you weren’t packing up. instead, you were listening to what hizashi was saying and getting your pens out.
“why aren’t you packing up, y/n? it’s time to go!” hizashi all but shouted.
you looked up at that, “oh! iida offered to tutor me in english, so we’re staying after for a little while. don’t wait up for me,” you grinned.
the three glanced at you, looking shocked (even shouta had an eyebrow raised). “on a friday?” oboro raised a brow. they began to walk out of the class.
sure enough, iida came over and sat in the seat beside you, pulling out an english textbook and a pen.
they met up with nemuri, informing her of what happened on the walk home.
“-and she had, like, this huge grin on her face! it was one of those smiles that could only show up on someone’s face when they just had the best day of their life!” oboro stated comically.
nemuri listened intently, nodding along like she was forming a thought.
“my guess is,” nemuri started, “that they’re already dating and we just don’t know it yet.”
oboro and hizashi stopped in their tracks, looking at nemuri like she’d grown a second head. shouta simply tilted his head either in concern or curiosity. who knows?
“what do you mean ‘already dating?’” hizashi ran his hands down his face.
oboro’s face then lit up like a light bulb, “oh! nemuri, you’re a genius! that makes so much sense,” he nodded excitedly like the golden retriever he is.
nemuri smirked and pointed towards herself, “thanks, i know.”
their next course of action was getting actual proof that you two were dating. however, this was easier said than done.
you had skipped lunch and stayed after school, letting out excuses all week that somehow included iida.
today, they were ready. today, they were determined.
when you told them that iida was once again tutoring you and not to wait for you, they did that very thing. they waited outside, hiding in the bushes as inconspicuous as possible.
an hour passed, and they were still there. shouta was currently asleep against hizashi’s shoulder. nemuri was getting antsy and wouldn’t stop complaining (“can we just leave already?”). hizashi nodded along with nemuri every time she complained. oboro, however, was determined to see this through.
another thirty minutes had passed before they saw the doors opening. hizashi jumped at the sound, shoulders raising and waking up shouta in the process. nemuri and oboro smiled.
however, iida exited alone. the group frowned.
iida walked a few steps before stopping. he looked almost as if he was waiting for something. for someone. that was until you came skipping out a few minutes later. they couldn’t hear the interaction, but they could tell that you were profusely apologizing while iida was shaking his head almost endearingly. he said something, before grabbing your hand and pulling you closer to him. he kissed you on the temple, starting to walk. he pulled you along with him and smiled at your red face. they watched as your figures retreated, holding hands and talk animatedly.
for a few moments, the only things that could be heard were silence, their own shocked breaths, and the slight sound of birds chirping. their faces were utterly flabbergasted. nemuri and oboro smiled with an ‘i told you so’ look with wide eyes, hizashi had his hands on top of his head with his mouth so wide he could fit his fist in it, and shouta was expressing the most shock anyone had ever seen from him.
you were dating tensei iida. and they would’ve never known if it weren’t for oboro.
