“...Eeh. ....I made home made marshmallows for Jos-- ...Ahhh--- ...they’re a bit sticky...”

“Oh yeah! Chow chows are pretty nice. I like corgis and shibas though. If we’re talkin’ about small dogs. Big dogs.. I like ‘em all. Hard to decide.”

“But y’know.. There’s no such thing as a mean dog. Dogs are only mean ‘cause their owners didn’t raise ‘em right. Ducklings are pretty nice too though. I wouldn’t keep one as a pet though.”

Well the conversation certainly seemed to be going a positive direction, much to Josuke’s relief.

“If you like fuzzy things have you considered goin’ to the petting zoo? I know a few places have ‘em..– Oh! Seriously?”

She even offered to make him sweets.. Things were definitely going well. But shit– he hadn’t even introduced himself, or even learned her name.

“Ah! But before I forget. My name’s Josuke. And I would be pretty stoked if I got a dessert. Anything is fine with me.”

“Is that true? I’ve been chased by a big doggie before. He was biting at my heels and everything. I thought he was going to eat me. That seems pretty mean... I think I would keep a duck as a pet. Especially if I got to take care of it as a duckling. Or if it was orphaned.”

A petting zoo? An actual petting zoo?

“Do you think you know of a petting zoo that has bunnies? I’ve never pet a bunny, but I’ve heard they’re really, really soft. I want to touch one at least once!”

Yes, yes. Her greatest aspirations included petting soft things.

“Oh! I’m Minami Kotori. It’s nice to meet you Josuke-- ...Ah...I’ll keep it in mind that you don’t have a preference... You’re in high school too then? Did you-- ...Did you design your uniform yourself...?”

“Favorite fluffy animal?” He paused. Truthfully he wasn’t into them as much as girls– but there was one specific kind of fluffy animal he did like.. “That’s easy. I like dogs. Big ones, small ones– they’re all pretty nice.”

“I don’t think I’ve seen any alpacas in my life to have an opinion about ‘em… but birds are pretty okay.–……. Cheesecake. It’s not a fluffy animal, but I think it’s pretty good.”

“Dogs are...nice. Especially fluffy ones...like chow chows...or yippy Pomeranian... as long as they aren’t mean dogs, I like dogs too. ...And fuzzy ducklings. I really like to...touch soft things, I suppose.”

Phew. This felt much better. No more knife talk or fighting talk. Just fluffy animals and food.

“I like to make sweets...if I see you again some time, I could make you something other than cheesecake if you have a different type of sweet you’d like. Chocolate, maybe?”

She was laughing……. about knives? That wasn’t weird or anything.

“……. Ah……. yeah……. Ahahaha…….”

A bead of sweat ran down his face as he stifled a very half-hearted laugh.– Hold on.  She liked knives for buttering toast? So she didn’t like knives.

Knowing how people’s first impression of him always were, she more than likely assumed he was a deliquent. Guess that explained her weird behavior.

“…….. Uhh….. Actually. I don’t really like knives? Or knife fights. I don’t like poking innocent girls either! Listen….. I think… you might’ve gotten the wrong idea. I don’t like any of that stuff, except fluffy animals I guess? They’re pretty okay.”

He was either lying, or was less terrifying than she initially thought. Kotori figured only one question could reveal that.

“...Uhm...what’s your...favorite fluffy animal? ...I like...alpacas...and baby birds...I like...cheesecake-- ...Ah, wait. Cheesecakes aren’t fluffy animals....I’m thinking about cheesecake anyway, though.... oh, no...”

This was going horrible.  She was messing up, so was he– but if he could just compose himself for maybe a second… maybe the conversation would go somewhere.

Josuke took a brief pause, turning around as he fixed his hair with his comb– it was a small gesture, but it did help ease him somewhat.

Too bad her following words completely threw him off track.

“……… Knives?” 

“S-Sure? Do you….. like knives?”

The way he coolly combed up his hair-- it was totally clear to Kotori he must not have cared about his bad behavior at all! Kotori clutched at her chest, staring wide-eyed with horror at his comb. ...What if his comb was a cleverly disgusted knife?

“D-Do I?! Ahaha-- Ahahah!”

Oh, such nervous laughter.

“I--I like knives when they’re...b--...buttering toast....definitely not when they’re...used in knife fights... b--but if you like knife fights, that’s probably o-okay!! ...B...But not...when they’re used to...poke at an innocent school girl’s stomach or anything...”

Oh, no. Had she given him ideas? Oh no.

“I-- I love fluffy animals!!!”

She was causing a ruckus, and in turn– so was he.

“W-Wait wait! Please!” Josuke waved his hands in dismissal of her assumptions, pleading with her to give him a chance to explain himself.

“I’m– I ain’t gonna do that either! I just wanna talk to you!”

“...” Kotori faced away from him,  she then squatted down and cradled her face in her hands.

“...He....ain’t...”

His language seemed so strange. Really, really informal. Was this what high school delinquents were all like. After mustering up the bravest expression she could,she returned to a standing position and faced him once again.

“What should we talk about...? ...K--...Knives?”

Oh no, she noticed him staring. At first he tried to look away, but he found himself unable too. 

Obviously she was looking around for something in her uniform.. A paper maybe? Was she going to give him her number?

“…………”

“W-Wait… – H-Hold on! I don’t want your lunch money!”

“Aaaaaa....aaaaAAAAAAAAA---...”

He didn’t want her money?! That could only mean one thing!!

“Y--You’re going to...challenge me to...a wrestling...death cage...match.....uuuu--...uwaaaa....”

Oh. Oh no. He was looking right at her. And he was red in the face. What was that expression? Was he angry?

Kotori fished around in her uniform desperately before holding out a small crumpled bill.

“H--Here’s my lunch money!!”

Delinquents beat up girls for money, right?

[Judging by her reaction, his words must have been taken in a completely different light. Nevertheless, he didn’t clarify– certainly she was smart enough to understand what he meant. It looked like she was finally starting to process things in that tiny human brain of hers.]

‘At first, not. But eventually the avian species grew. Now there are more of us than of your own kind.– And no. I’m not rather fond of sweets, child.’

...Ah-- That doesn’t-- ....That doesn’t really make sense to me...I’ve never known anyone who could speak to birds...

[She huffed in surprise. No sweets? Really?]

...You like...more mature flavors then? ...Coffee? Tea?

[He typed away in response. It was a rather tedious thing to do, but it was better than writing or speaking to her.]

‘Address me as Doctor Iwamine. Frankly it’s surprising how underdeveloped you are. Most humans that remain are able to understand birds fluently.’

‘As for the treats that I like… There’s no need for such information. I was frustrated at your lack of understanding.’

...Under...developed?

[Of course, her first inclination is to look to her chest. ...But she soon realized that wasn’t what he meant.]

...Doctor...Iwamine. As far as I knew, people couldn’t understand birds at all...

Huh? ...But how can I make sweets for you if you don’t tell me what you like? I don’t want to get it wrong again...

I’m not upset, I’m annoyed. 

[She still didn’t understand. With an irritated expression, Shuu opened the laptop on his desk, using it’s keys to type out a sentence.]

‘My name is Shuu. Foolish girl.’

Ah. Shuu-san. It’s nice to meet you. I’m Minami Kotori. This was a really, really smart idea.

Could you type the name of the types of treats you like? I don’t want to bring you something you dislike again. You got so frustrated you left a little welt on my hand...
