Return of the Translated LAGG Epithets

It is I! The owner of the former wepwawet.org Wiki and all it’s associated pages.

I have laid low for awhile, busy with various projects. No more!

I have 190 translated pages from the LAGG (Lexikon der Ägyptischer Götter und Götterbezeichnungen (Dictionary of the Egyptian gods and Titles of Gods)). I will be posting them again. I have not and will be repurchasing the wepwawet.org domain name or running the wiki again. I will be posting to Google Drive and limiting access to people I trust.

The only deities that are not finished at this time are a number of pages for Heru-Behdety and the Kemetic transliterations for Hethert.

Heru-wer Mekhenty en Irty

All the pieces are falling together slowly. I’ve always liked Heru-wer. I didn’t have a formal relationship with him until recently.

There’s a nice lake near my house. It’s about a 5 km (3 mile) walk around it. Nicely forested around with a raised boardwalk. Over the edge of the boardwalk is the natural greenery of my area. The epithet, “The lord of the great green” suddenly came to mind one day walking through the area. I stopped to take a picture of the greenery.

I thought about which deity this epithet could belong to... my first thought was Wesir/Osiris; my next thought was Sobek.

I was translating the epithets of Heru-wer Mekhenty en Irty today from German to English. Some of his epithets are these:

The husband made a really good New York Striploin steak on a bed of sautéed onions, garlic, red table grapes, and red wine vinegar with smashed potatoes with green onion. I set aside a piece of steak with the mashed potatoes and offered it informally to him, then ate it at the end.

It’s sad. I have the entire thing translated from German to English. Beautifully formatted, with the hieroglyphs from the LAGG. 117 pages of just Aset. You could have it. But oh... you burned me... so nah-uh

Bast more than the Queen of Cats

Bast is one of the oldest Gods and isn’t often given the credit she deserves. Commonly loved but rarely truly respected. She is usually worshipped as the Queen of Cats but that is merely a small part of who and what she is. She is Protector of Ra and defeater of Apep. She is so powerful that she was the “Body Guard” for the King of the Gods Ra, defeater of evil incarnate. She is the last line of defense against oblivion.

She is no defenseless kitten but one of the most powerful deities of the Ancient Egyptians. She is a first Kingdom goddess with roots tracing to pre-dynasty tribal chieftains.  She was a Lower Kingdom Goddess with her temple city Bubastis being just north of modern-day Cairo. So devoted to her worship were her people that when the Upper Kingdom came down and conquered the Lower Kingdom, thus uniting the two Kingdoms that though many of the Lower Egyptian God’s were replaced with Upper Deities, as conquerors are want to do, Bast could not be replaced. Bast and Sekhmet respectively held the same position. However since there could only be one Warrior Goddess and protector of All of Egypt, Bast was shifted into the role of Protector of Ra, the royal family, and creation as they knew it. Through the thousands, yes thousands of years, the two started to become syncretized together and were often interchangeable. However, Sekhmet’s role was always to protect Egypt from outer forces while Bast main focus was that of inner troubles.

It wasn’t until much later, when the Greek’s conquered Egypt that Bast was defanged and declawed much of her power given over to Dionysus and her name changed to Ailuros. Thousands of years after she was the Captain of the Guard to the Royal family of the God’s, Defeater of Apep, She Who Devours, The Greeks made her Queen of Cat’s losing her dual form of Cat-Woman she would only now be depicted as a small black cat.   Much of power and worship having been stripped away given to the male Greek God’s of the conquering kingdom across the seas.

Egyptian’s didn’t have the same feelings about sex as we do in this modern society. Bast is just as much a Warrior Goddess as she is the Sex Kitten, Mother, and Magician. She doesn’t need to be either or, she is all and more. To trivialize her is insulting. If you want to work with her don’t be lazy. Get to know the depths of her story. Know that she is more complicated, knowledgeable and powerful than you could ever imagine.  Like most of us, she likes boxes but doesn’t want to be trapped in one. Do not limit your perception of her; she will not thank you for it.

You can’t mention Bast and Queen in the same sentence and not get my attention. There is a much lesser-known goddess known from the New Kingdom onwards and only in Karnak and Medinet Habu. 

Her name is Bast-Mut or sometimes reversed as Mut-Bast. This is a fusion of Mut, the consort of Amun-Ra in Karnak, most often depicted as fully human with the vulture cap and the double crown.

When Bast and Mut are fused together to create this new goddess, she takes the place of Mut as Amun-Ra’s consort and the mother of Khonsu.

Personal gnosis of Bast-Mut: She is the Queen. The consort of the great Amun-Ra. She doesn’t like people putting themselves down. Offerings to her bread, water, chai tea, dark chocolate with bits in it

Just curious; are there any kemetics out there that use/want to use Natron for rituals? I've started making some (scented and unscented batches) and wanted to see if anyone would want to buy some. It's pretty easy to make so I can definitely write down some recipes I've done + link the OG if anything wants to make it themselves. If I do start selling it I'll probably do small, medium, and large options so you don't have to get a ton/very little. Just wanted to check before anything else!

@the-corvids-creed Natron is a naturally occurring soda ash salt found naturally in Wadi Natroun (and other places) in the western desert of Egypt. Historically the people of Kemet used it to purify objects, themselves, and the deceased. It was also used in mummification. As well it was the flux for Egyptian faience.

A few epithets of Bast from the LAGG (Lexikon der Ägyptischer Götter und Götterbezeichnungen). I’ve done the translations from German to English myself. I wanted to try my hand at recreating the hieroglyphs. So with Vygus’ dictionary and a hard copy of Faulkner’s “A Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian” I tried my hand at two of them.

Epithets of Netjer

I have 192 pages of translated epithets of the Netjer on my hard drive. I’ve also translated most of them to Portuguese and working on Spanish at the moment.

I’ve been burned in the past and am hesitant to open myself up again. I really wish I had a copy of Book 8 though. Google Books is very limited. And the university library is closed due to covid-19 and over an hours ride on transit even if it was open.

Hello! I’m really glad you asked this because I realized I’ve never translated Taweret’s epithets from the LAGG. So I spent the last hour doing that for my own purposes - this is the first time I was able to view Taweret’s entry in the LAGG and I had no idea she has so many more epithets. So below is what I have for epithets for Bes, Taweret, and Wenut! They’re pretty much all my notes/translations from the LAGG, and I do not speak German at all, so take them with a grain of salt! :D

(There are two epithets I left in German because I haven’t seen an English translation for them and they’re way too complex for me. Maybe someone else will have a good translation?)

I hope I’m not too late to be of assistance here, but the first epithet in German: Die vorsteherin des schönen Ackers im abgegrenzten Gebiet des gerechtfertigen nb mHyt is “The chief/head of the beautiful field in the demarcated area of the justified nb mHyt.” The second one for Wenut: “Die die wache hält, um den abzuwehren, der hinter das Haus des großen Gottes kommen wird” is “The one who keeps watch/guard to ward off the one who will come behind the house of the great god”

Statuary

This is my commissioned statue of Bast-Mut, made circa 2007 from polymer-based clay. The artist’s name is Nebra, and I can no longer find her website on the internet. I later had a custom Wepwawet made to match her.

Bast-Mut

I have been working with Bast-Mut as my spiritual mother for 14 years and have uncovered some information about her. She is still rare to find historical attestation to, but there is some. 

First is from Oriental Institute Publications (OIP) Volume 83 page 36, (Medinet Habu Volume V - The Temple Proper, Part I The Portico, the Treasury, and Chapels adjoining the first hypostyle hall)

This is from the Second Court, Column 32, South Face (A)

We have Ramses III offering clothing to Bast-Mut. Bast-Mut here is fully human with the double-feather crown often seen on Amun, and the Hethert crown (cow horns and a solar disk)

Next up is from OIP 93 (Medinet Habu Volume VII - The temple proper, part III, The third hypostyle hall and all rooms accessible from it with friezes from scenes from the roof terraces and exterior walls of the temple).

This is Plate 558 from page 148 - this is actually a very wide image, and I am cropping it to just Bast-Mut (the full image is available upon request).

Here we have another fully human Bast-Mut, wearing the vulture cap and the double-crown. The text in the OIP says: “Ramses III thurifying an offering to Amun-Ra in the presence of Bast-Mut, Khonsu, and Amunet” from the Temple proper, roof terraces, south wall, east end

I’ve partially recreated the glyphs in the 7 beside her head.

Next two are both from the OIP 116 (Reliefs and Inscriptions at Luxor Temple Vol 2 - The Façade, portals, upper register scenes, columns, marginalia and statuary in the collonade hall)

This is the king presenting the temple to Amun-Ra in the presence of Bast-Mut.

First is plate 144 on page 147. It reads: “Words spoken by Mut, lady of heaven, Bastet who resides in Asheru: "O (my) beloved son, lord of the two lands Djeserkheperure-Setepenre, I am your mother. I am giving you your suck, that you may you suck fr[om] my m[ilk; may] it (lit. they) en[ter] into y[ou] in life and do[minion...] jo[y...] (I) have given to you millions of jubilees like Ra"”

Here we have a lioness-headed goddess with the solar disk on her head and a staff in her hand.

The last historical attestation might be Bast-Mut or Sekhmet-Mut, but the part with the name is damaged. This lioness-headed goddess is represented the same way Bast-Mut was depicted in the previous image.

This is plate 149, on page 152. It reads: “[Words spoken by Mut...] who resides in Opet: "You are my beloved son, [...] I have fashioned your members of [electrum and] all your [limbs] of biA-metal. [I have] created/distinguished [you as the heir] of Re, you remaining upon the [throne] of Geb. (I) have given to you millions of jubilees like Ra"”
