Heres the thing you gotta understand about statistics.
“Increases your chances by 80%” does not mean “there is now an 80% chance”.
If your chances were previously 10%, your chances are now 18%, not 90%.
if your chances were roughly 1%, they’re now just slightly less than 2%.
thats how that works.
Wow I don’t understand math at all
‘if you have a baby after 35, the chance of deformities goes up by 100%’ is a line I hear alot.
It goes up from .5% to 1%
For those of you confused, here’s an explanation. 😁 Hope this will help!————————————————————————
If your chances have “increased” by 80%, this means you have an additional amount added to your initial “value” (or chance), prior to the increase.
Essentially, you’re adding 80% of what your current chances are, to said value.
This process could be compared to discounted items from the original price of an item - only, this time, it’s addition, and not subtraction.
Let’s refer to one of the percentage examples given by the OP.
Example 1:
Your initial chance of an event occurring was 10%. An 80% increase would result in your chance now being 18%.
How?
Take 80% of your initial value. So, we multiply 80% to 10%
80% x 10% = 0.80 x 0.10 = 0.08
Add this calculated percentage value to your initial percentage for your final value.
(0.08 + 0.10) x 100% = 8% + 10% = 18%
Example: Comparable Scenario - Discounts
Find the discounted price of an item originally valued at $80 with a 30% discount.
First, take 30% of your initial item cost.
30% x $80 = $24
Meaning, our discount would give us $24 off the original value.
Now, subtract this value ($24) from the initial item cost ($80) to get your discounted price.
$80 - $24 = $56
Therefore, our value of our item would be $56 (before taxes) with the discount.

Well, that sure explains a lot!
Back in the old days, Kenneth Branagh actually involved Tom in the process of creating Loki. He asked Tom for all the aspects that he’d wish to explore. Tom kept a scrapbook where he wrote down all his ideas. The actors of Thor met to discuss the dynamics between the characters. That’s when Tom and Rene Russo came up with the backstory of Frigga being the one who taught Loki magic, and decided that they would share a tic. After filming Thor, Tom met Joss Whedon and they spent a whole afternoon discussing Loki, and what happened to him after his suicide attempt.
And now, actors have no idea what’s going on when they’re filming and reciting their lines. It’s no wonder the films feel so soulless. It looks like Marvel completely missed the fact that Loki became so popular because the guy who played him always knew what the character was feeling and how he would be moving.
Damn, I can’t imagine how weird it’s gotta be on set with no fucking clue what you’re doing
