For this post, expand on today's freewrite that got you thinking about your potential podcast audience. Who will care most about your topic? How will you appeal to them? Remember to try to avoid generalizations when identifying your audience. For example, "UK students" are comprised of many different kinds of people.

Your post should be about 150 words and is due by class time on Tuesday, 10/10.

In your response to a classmate, offer suggestions to help them think more critically about their audience. If you are a member of the target audience, does their plan to appeal to you sound like a good one? Why or why not?

Post # 5: Research

As you start to think about narrowing down your ideas and research questions, try finding a scholarly (peer-reviewed) article pertaining to your topic. Remember that you’ll need to broaden your search terms at times-- it’s highly unlikely to find a scholarly article specifically about any of the buildings on our campus.

Post the MLA citation for your article along with a brief summary of about 150 words. Your post is due by class time on Tuesday, 10/3.

Post # 10! Podcast Reflections

Congratulations! Your presentations are done and hopefully, your podcast recordings and transcripts are nearly ready.

Although several of you addressed problems during your presentations, take a few minutes here to reflect on the process and end result. What are you most proud of about your podcast? You have all worked hard and I know there are many successes to celebrate. If given more time, what would you improve or do differently? Even the most experienced and accomplished writers and speakers have things to work on. Is there anything besides more time that would have helped you accomplish your goals for the podcast?

Your post should be about 150-250 words and is due by class time on Friday, 7/14.

Post # 9: Introduction Planning

For this post, begin drafting/outlining your introduction for your podcast.

-How will you lead in? Music? Sound effects? Jump right in with your voiceover?

-How will you get your audience’s attention? How will you introduce yourself and your podcast?

-What will you say about your space and topic? How will you let your audience know what the podcast is all about? (It’s a good idea to have a thesis statement-- not necessarily an argument but a statement about what your main point/overall idea is-- and a preview of what you will talk about throughout your podcast.)

-How will you transition into the body of your podcast? More music?

At this point, you can create a bulleted list that addresses these questions, OR begin drafting your intro in paragraph form-- whatever works for you. Focus on content, but also take some time to think about the more technical elements: what music will you have, if any? Will it play at the beginning only, as background underneath your voiceover, during transitions as an interlude? Consider the podcasts we’ve heard and what you liked and didn’t like about each one to help guide your thinking.

Your post should be 150-250 words long and is due by class time on 7/7.

Note: although the word requirement for the post is the same as always, keep in mind that a full introduction to your podcast will likely be much longer.

For this post, talk about these episodes you’ve heard and discuss the qualities/strategies you want to emulate in your own podcast. What do some of these episodes do well that you want to incorporate in your project? Is there anything you didn’t like about these podcasts and want to be sure to avoid?

Post # 7: Interviewees

Think about one person you could potentially interview and do a bit of background research on that person. Why do you want to interview them and what could you potentially learn from them?

In this blog post, you do not have to identify any personal information, especially if your interviewee is a friend/roommate. However, talk as much as you can about their background and why they are qualified to speak with you on your topic.

This post should be about 150 words and is due by class time on 6/29.

Post # 6: Academic Sources

Finding, reading, and understanding academic sources can be difficult when you’re just starting out, and even when you’re a veteran of the process, but they are the best sources for the most accurate, specific, researched information about your topic. Try your hand at finding a reliable, academic source that pertains to your project.

Include the MLA-format citation of the source (see https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/06/ or https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/07/ for examples!)

Explain here how you found it and how you know it’s an academic/”scholarly” source.

Then, use the strategies we discussed in class this morning to find and summarize the main idea/argument/point of the source. [Besides that, are there any interesting or useful quotes or ideas you found? Write about them here so that you can come back to them later as you’re putting together your podcast.]

Finally, briefly evaluate the source overall: is it one that you think will be particularly useful in your project? Why or why not?

While not required, also feel free to list other sources you come across in your search for the one you write about here. Keeping a list will save you time and frustration later when you return to your research.

Post # 5: Podcast Pitch Ideas

For this post, begin brainstorming your ideas for your podcast, and the pitch you’ll give to the class next week about that podcast.

After listening to a couple of examples of podcasts, what do you think are the main elements you want to include in your own?

What do you find most interesting about your chosen space that you want to talk about and present to a podcast audience? Who would your target audience be for your podcast and why? What research do you still need/want to do about your space? Who would you like to interview? What do you think your overall goal for your podcast will be?

Your post should be about 150-250 words and is due by class time on Wednesday, 6/21.

Post # 4: The Writing Process

You’re in the thick of your first writing assignment for college... how’s it going? What has your writing process been like so far? What has worked out well, and what hasn’t?

What is your plan for revision after peer review today? Did you get some helpful advice? Contradicting advice?

Also take a minute to reflect on your topic so far: are you still happy with the space you chose? Why or why not?

How is your writing coming? It can be difficult to get started, but if you just get something, anything, on the page, you’ll at least have something to work with!

Post # 3: Campus Inquiry

Today in class we spent some time exploring campus and noticing details. Hopefully, you collected a lot of ideas for your double entry journal. For this post, complete your double entry journal using at least two details you observed on campus today (post pictures if possible). On the other side, engage in some critical inquiry about those details that caught your eye. Why did these things stand out to you? What questions do you have about what you observed? What research ideas and potential project topics could come from your observations? Where do you think you would turn for that research?

After you’ve completed your double entry journal, look over it again and take some time to reflect. What space are you most interested in pursuing for your essay you’ll be writing this week? Remember that it can be a building or an outdoor space, but it should be somewhere that you’ll be able to visit and observe a couple more times this week.

Post # 2: Speech Reflection

Congratulations! Your first speaking assignment for this class is DONE!

Enjoy your weekend, but also take some time to reflect on the experience.

I’ve asked you to have your speech recorded on your phone, so now take some time to watch yourself– more than once, if possible. As you watch, be proud of the courage you showed in getting up in front of an instructor you’ve known for less than three days and classmates you’ve known for less than a week! Also be -constructively- critical. Even the most confident, practiced public speakers can improve in some way.

So, this blog post should be about your reflection on your speech performance. How do you feel about it overall? What do you think you did well? How were you successful with this assignment? What do you think you could improve? How will you take steps to make those improvements next time? What can your instructor, tutors, and even classmates do to help you make those improvements next time?

Use the guidelines on the speech rubric to help you assess/reflect on your work, and be sure to use specific examples from your speech video to support your answers. If you want, post your video along with your reflection so that others can admire your bravery and hear all about the interesting places in your lives!
