Every week my friend explains the intricacies of his complicated clinical psychology research to me in perfect english and then we get to the german part and I do some shit like accidentally saying I pickled a book at the bookstore instead of saying I picked up a book at the bookstore or forgetting the word for "appreciate" and its just my weekly humiliation ritual but its ok

#every day i ask myself how i managed to con them into giving me a C2 certificate #i just. i mean.#i know i know i know also its a different situation. i started learning at 19 #he grew up being exposed from a young age english is so ubiquitous all this stuff i still think i speak more fluent german than probably #like most americans who didnt grow up there like i should be proud of myself and not beat myself up for somwtimes using the wrong word or #declining something wrong when nervous or using an unidiomatic phrase but it feels BAD i have such bad imposter syndrome #i think when im surrounded by it more i will feel better its just been really difficult having of course 95% of my life has to be in englis #still and trying to mantain it as best i can but i just always feel so stupid and mortified when i speak it #still. i need to compare myself to myself when i was younger and Not to native speakers.#i will cling to that fact that i didnt get 'englished' once for the 2 weeks i was in germany early this year that was HUGE for me #esp like doing things like negotiating with the car rental people or talking to the prople about how to get my sim card to work having long #convos with the lady who was running my airbnb etc etc like it was really good. but also that was long ago now and im not gonna have anothe #chance to be immersed to that degree again for many months and meanwhile my german just stagnates a bit which sucks andnmakes it so #embarrassing when i do my weekly Try not to fuck it up session. it just was rough today cuz we started with english which always throws me #off i prefer starting with german of course but . we have to take turns #anyways just. sometimes im like okay and i want to have people let me teach this!?#but then i remember how bad the vast vast vast majority of like high school german teachers in this country are at german and its honestly #well okay yes im fine. im gonna be fine. i need to just be confident and keep plugging away
