@melody-ofthe-stars
Happy Tuesday internet, today I got rejected for a job 24 minutes after applying and now I am going to take a nap.
An update! I sent a very carefully worded email to the recruiter (note this is an internal job posting which def factors into the dynamic) and spouted some corporate-ese about how I was puzzled by this rejection as it's in the same job family as my current job, and asked for feedback so I can take it forward and incorporate it into my "growth plan" (blech)
That afternoon the recruiter got back to me and offered to review my resume with the hiring manager and get back to me with feedback by the end of the week.
Today, she reached out and said the hiring manager would be "scheduling some time to talk" and a half hour later I got a meeting invite for a job interview next week.
Now, I don't know if I was initially rejected by The Algorithm or if my resume was just skimmed and tossed aside because of regular ol human nonsense, but here's the lesson learned: advocate for yourself once in a while. Be the squeaky wheel.
This isn't a one on one social situation where a friend says no and you respect their boundaries. You are being churned through a massive machine that'll crush you without slowing down if you let it. Push back, ask why, and ask for it in writing. You don't have to be mulch. You can also make the wheels turn.
I'm adding to this again! I had my interview today and found out that the manager (who prefers to review resumes himself) was overwhelmed because they got nearly 400 applicants for this role, and the recruiter was helping him review resumes. So I literally just got lost in the shuffle.
Despite that, a polite check in was enough to put my name back on the radar, and I now have a second interview later this week. I've been informed I'm in their top 3 picks.
I have whiplash but also hot DAMN does this reinforce the importance of self advocacy at work.
One more joke hate: You may claim to be a woman but biologically you are a featherless biped and thus a man.
Finally a good argument for why I'm actually a man
if you told diogenes the cynic about being trans he'd be like "lol that's a sick troll you're epic" and you'd be like "diogenes no i'm serious" and he'd be like "lol that's even better lmao those guys are so mad about it" and then he'd start going by new original neopronouns every single day specifically to piss off the whole symposium
I just had an idea for a really dumb comedy sketch where a transphobe starts ranting about what really makes a women a woman, and diogenes returns each time with a different cis woman or outwardly femme intersex person that doesn't meet the criteria saying "behold, a man!"
"a woman has XX chromosomes"
*Diogenes with an androgen insensitive XY cis woman*: behold, a man!
"Nono, a woman can bear children!"
*Diogenes with someone who has medical complications associated with pregnancy*: "behold, a man!"
"nono, a woman produces the large gamete"
*Diogenes with a postmenopausal cis woman* "behold, a man!"
Trans Rights With Diogenes! coming to PBS
This is so wholesome
Update: he finally got the cat to the vet to see if she had a microchip

CAT DAD IS BACK
aww, the kids grow up so fast. ;-;
HHHHHHHH I LOVE CAT DAD!
This is, by far, the single most adorable fucking thing I have ever seen.
update:
I love that he kept …. All of them.
I’ve reblogged the earlier part of this thread before, and the new stuff makes it even better.
This is the Tumblr equivalent of a warm hug on a cold day.
You’re welcome.
I remember this thread, but I never saw the grown-up pics ❤
@every-n-anything
All hail Catdad
I saw Catdad for the first time today, and my day instantly became exponentially better.
I’M CRYING!?
CATDAD HAS REVIVED MY WILL TO LIVE
I live for cat dad-
Cat dad has saved us all
CAT DAD!!
I had not seen the updates. I am so happy that the Cat Gods smiled upon this person and their new family :)
He’s got more recent pictures (and is also an INCREDIBLE artist), but this is the fam circa May 2020 :>
It’s been over a year? Where is cat dad? Where is he?
Fear not, CatDad is still happily with us:
Cat Dad 2022 pic.
It’s been far too long since I saw these guys. “Heartwarming” doesn’t begin to touch it. :)
@forests-green
i didnt know people were insecure about their eye colour until i came on this website
hey man is everything all right at home ?
"i assume bad things about people based on their physical characteristics and think they should be bred out" Hey. hey say that again slower this time maybe you'll realize something funny
Hey are you offended by the word bitch? I'm going to send you a hate anon, but I saw that you go by she/her and I respect women
don't let anything stop u from being a hater king
take your time
When vampires are portrayed as mainly preying on women that's so unrealistic like I'm sorry but they're too careful especially around strange men. Dudes are much easier. You could literally lurk in a bush in the park at night and call out "whoa look at this fucked up looking squirrel" and have 3 grown men climb in immediately
Also almost every woman I know has low blood pressure and so many are anemic. Men make for much better prey because 1) easy to catch yes and 2) so much more blood
people love extolling the virtues of ball-and-socket joints and how it makes us more advanced and all that but I don't see any fucking octopuses in slings now do I. Bones are overrated and I want a refund.
how dare you lay this curse upon my home
you don't frighten me
Everyone in the notes saying "this is a 10k post to me" "posts that have 100k energy" "posts that are 30k to me" or whatever - alright, fine! Put the fuckin' work in then! You'd better have this queue'd up every day for the next six months! You'd better have all your friends queue'ing it up too!
You want me to suffer?? You want to treat me like my own goddamn bones do??? MAKE AN EFFORT
imagine if doorways grew back like scabbed over with fresh drywall and you had to keep carving them back out with a jabsaw to keep the doorway clear etc
Imagine if the membranes recoiled in pain every time you did this. Imagine if over time, some doorways became accustomed sensation. Imagine that very rarely, some even seemed to enjoy it.
*sleepover host voice* imagine if you two went to sleep
Oh for gods sake kids it’s like piercing an ear - that’s why you put a doorframe in - you don’t hang a door in drywall, you gremlins. You frame the door. It’s like those gauges that people put in their ears - the hole stays. It won’t scab over with a doorframe in it. You’ve lived around doors you whole life, you little clowns. Lights out
As someone who took etiquette lessons, politeness is an incredibly effective tool for disarming bigots. You can either force them to reconsider their words/actions by directly and calmly confronting their behavior (by using the rules of society in your favor), or you can dip entirely while they appear to be in the wrong.
Both options are great.
Because the thing is, when bigots pick fights, they are 100% counting on you to get louder than them. Or meaner. They want you to react emotionally and provide fodder for their 'You're Too Emotionally Immature To Understand' cannon.
What they aren't expecting you to do is say one of the following phrases in a polite, concerned tone:
Are you okay?
That's not the kind of language I was raised to use with others.
Do you need a moment to think on why that wasn't acceptable?
This is no way to engage in intelligent conversation. Please try that again in a kinder tone if you'd like this to continue. (I really like this one because it lets you turn their public-shame rhetoric around)
For those of you who'd are spiteful and/or dealing with Fundamentalists/Evangelicals/generally shitty Christians:
What's happening in your life to cause you this much anger? I can't imagine hurting so badly that I need to hurt other people.
Who taught you it was acceptable to treat other people this way? Certainly not the Jesus I remember.
Whatever happened to 'judge not lest ye be judged'?
If I talked like that in front of my parents or grandparents I would be ashamed.
I think there's something you need to pray on before we try and have this conversation.
And my all time favorite:
"It sounds to me like there are some seriously dark and angry forces at work in your heart."
(Nothing stops a Christian bigot in their tracks faster than implying the Devil is causing their bigotry. But you MUST be calm, polite, and gentle with your tone and wording. It is absolutely fair to twist the rules and play them at their own game, but you gotta play hard.)
TLDR: It's much faster to use etiquette, politeness, and rhetoric reversal when eviscerating idiots online and in person, because they aren't expecting you to weaponize their behaviors back in their direction. Don't get angry, get spitefully polite! :)
vampire oc who enjoys roleplaying as his vampire oc in forums online
he finally meets the middle aged housewife who is his long-term writing partner in person and they fall in love so it’s a romance between an eternally 25 6’3” 400 year old German vampire who learned modern slang online and his now wife, an eternally 50 year old stereotypical Minnesotan mother of 5 who he treats like a goddess (he ate her lazy, entitled first husband)
he comes into the room after eating her husband and is like “It Is Done” and she’s like “oh sweetie, you’re such a messy eater 🥰” before licking her thumb and wiping blood off the corner of his mouth
her eldest daughter returns from college to find her mother is more spry and happy and energetic than she has been in years and has to awkwardly sit across from her new stepdad who looks the same age as her. she notices her mother and stepfather refusing to eat any of the Minnesotan culinary delights her mother has prepared. she says nothing. she likes seeing her mother happy. even if her stepdad is weird and quiet.
after the kids mature, the vampire and his bride go on a world tour. they’re at every luxurious spot in America and then back to continental Europe. the odd couple. the striking young man who looks like a model and his wife, a very normal looking woman who is twice his age with a strong midwestern accent. more in love than any two people anyone has ever seen.
oh! and they still write their vampire OCs together. they publish their joint authored bodice-ripper vampire romance novels for money.
I'm turning 30 this month, and for some reason have become suddenly interested in material possessions. like what if,,,,,,,,my couch was nice. what if my sheets were nice. is this what happens to you??
I think a couple of things combine: you now have enough experience in the persistence of material objects to understand that if they don’t actively fail, they continue to define the shape of your material existence. The four stainless steel forks you randomly bought for your first place are now the forks you might, conceivably, have for the rest of your life.
You also have experience of the world around you. You realize, by comparison with your friends who like nice things, that your forks are shit. Incidentally, you also realise that despite having made choices that were defined by being broke or frugal, you do not actually get points for having shitty thin-handled forks that are annoying to use. You don’t get respect or appreciation or comfort or pleasure. After ten years of use out of $5 cutlery, you have inarguably gotten your money’s worth. You will get nothing else from them. You only get, forever, the experience of using shitty forks.
You have probably lived on your own for a few years now, perhaps even for more than a decade. Some items have fallen behind and been lost, thrown away, broken or failed; both others are still your companions. Depending on how nice they are, this is a source of comfort and frustration. Love to the hiking boots that have lasted! Affection and allegiance to the 20 year old band t-shirt! Disgust to the t-shirt bought last year that is sent to recycling for being so shit. Increasing admiration to the grand-grandmother’s mixing bowl, especially compared to the 2016 purchase of a mixing bowl that couldn’t handle the fast-paced lifestyle. Annoyance, disappointment and sorrow to smartphone case number 241, what the fuck. Smug pride in oneself for having the foresight, in an earlier house move, to splash out on a decent new mattress. As these items persist, you cannot help but notice that quality of materials/items is now obvious and visible, because you’ve spent more time with them. A 22-year old newly in possession of two knives - a cheap shitty kitchen knife and a good one they inherited - will have spent the same amount of time with both objects; when you’re 30, you’ve worked for 8 years with the good knife, while the cheap one (if you even recall ever having it) was thrown out in a fit of annoyance six years ago.
You have, at this point, in addition to using them, also handled and cleaned most of your possessions several times. You have realized, very materially and fundamentally, that you must care for these items for the rest of your lifespan, or theirs.
You are (possibly) out of the early desperate scramble to suddenly, instantly furnish an entire independent life (sheets, mattresses, winter coat, forks) with no money. This naturally led to restrictions on what you chose.
You are (possibly) out of the eaves of how you were raised. Many people spend their early twenties reconciling how they were raised with how they want to live. Perhaps you were raised to feel guilty for wanting things, such as toys or attention, which you later dutifully applied to things like education or new forks. Over time, you will have surprised yourself with how you met, identified, addressed, and reconciled these tensions from your upbringing; through conflict and resolution with parents/teachers/church/internet/social media, you have now arrived at what you have. If you had big things to confront, like coming out as queer, you may have thought this work was done. Now you suddenly find yourself confronting the weird beliefs you have that “you don’t NEED new forks” or “it’s bourgeois to want things” or “NOBODY spend £200 on HIKING BOOTS, what are you, rich?” And you might find yourself feeling like, well, actually, I’m grown-up and I hike and eat, actually.
So yes, I think that when you are 30 you are in the danger zone of getting a new couch.
happy new year, y’all
shoutout to everyone who’s also dealing with the longest year of a week this week
what I really like about all these vintage couple’s portraits is that there is a very certain romatic decorum kept up – certain themes and poses – which, while of course being the mainstream preferred view of couples repeated throughout many studios, are just… so nice to look at.
this staged affection, a mix of theatricality and intimacy, the couple holding still for a couple of moments and now immortalised in a very set sequence of embraces and kisses. there is a charm to it even when I can’t tell whether this was a genuine couple portait or just actors hired by the photographer.
the kiss on the bare shoulder (eyes perfectly averted), the cheek caress, the piano and the violin, the interrupted embrace, the woman tilted back as in a half-stopped dance…
I simply must torment you a bit with these, let us see some of my personal favourites! (part one due to the image limit)
let us start with the kiss on the cheek (eyes averted! oh the pose! these were taken between 1910-1940)
or the nearly opposite energy (how daring!) of the kiss or caress with direct eye contact (1910-1930)
and then the innocent – yet so flirty – classic of the park encounter! (1890-1920)
and then the famed kiss on the bare shoulder – what an idea, what a vibe, such intimacy! (1910-1930)
and oh, I am not done, look at this – the adoration of the woman! look at this expression, this pose, this decorum! (1910-1940)
and then some of my favourites from the more playful or direct category, enjoy (1910-1930):
and, at last (thank you for still being here and witnessing my recent fascination with vintage polish photography) my three absolute favourites outside of any particular categories (1910-1930)
just look at her. just look.
