Tumblr and I
Before I enrolled into this paper, I’ve never heard of a site called ‘Tumblr’. I know that because I enrolled in this paper called ‘Adolescent Development’, it is inevitable that I get to understand more about what adolescents do nowadays. After I checked Tumblr out regularly, I was immensely shocked.
Those images that made me so uncomfortable included: teenagers exposing their explicit body parts, words that were gloomy and depressing, clips that repeated actions such as slapping someone, shouting at someone, love-making actions, spitting on someone and so on. I couldn’t tell if this content was coming from our classmates or from outside. I couldn’t tell so I couldn’t delete them. All I could do was ignore and endure them.
Therefore, I thought of a strategy, which is I’m going to post something positive, meaningful and evocative. That was the foundation for all my postings. On one hand I posted information according to the curriculum of this paper, on the other I posted videos, photos and news that I thought could bring changes to this world. Especially the news of the subway killer in Taiwan, “It all started from a birthday present”. I’m not sure if anyone saw it, but at least I know that I have played a part in trying to change our dark society. A single spark can start a prairie fire. It is a hard lesson but I hoped at least we learned something from the tragedy.
