I don’t know if it’s healthy but sometimes I think of Toph Beifong and get uncontrollably emotional

I haven't watch the atla live action and honestly have no real desire to. I also don't have any desire to engage in the whole "is it good/bad" discussion. But I have to say this or I will perish:

Setting aside the fact that I've heard great things about the actress who plays Toph, I simply. cannot. make myself feel okay whenever I see screenshots with her in her travel outfit w/ a full face of makeup, including eyeliner. It looks so wrong.

It's not that I think Toph is too masculine for that, because I don't. She was shown to be perfectly okay with getting dolled up when the situation called for it, so long as it was on her terms.

But while they're traveling? Fighting? Roughing it more often than not? She stated clearly (at least in the og show) that her appearance isn't something she prioritizes so WHY would she care about having her makeup done every morning???

My mind went somewhere dark while writing an article about polling—which is entirely unrelated to the darkness my mind made up—but in an event where Toph experiences Sokka’s death in a battle in tandem with the Gaang and ultimate revival, because of course Katara revives her brother, Toph wouldn’t be able to recover from it for a while.

Her relief would be immediate after he comes back, but in those tumultuous moments between his being killed and Katara doing the impossible to wake him up and get his heart started in the middle of her own pain and fear of her big brother dying in front of her, dying while she’s working on him, Toph is numb. She can’t think, she can’t feel anything aside from the fact that she is confirming every millisecond that her best friend’s heart is no longer beating—the heartbeat that she can recognize within a split second the way she’d never clocked anyone else’s.

I think that contrary to popular belief, her response would be this muted; not loud or explosive because she’s just so focused on him, on trying to feel a heartbeat that she, for just a moment, isn’t sure she is ever going to feel again.

But when that heartbeat does return, her eyes pool with tears, and she feels Katara collapse in sobs over her brother, the relief is like she’d never felt before. Chest tight, head pounding, and all she wants to do is enter his embrace and tell him that if he ever did anything like that again, that she would make sure to be the one to bring him back just to kill him again—she wouldn’t disclose that the reason would be because of the fear of the spirits put into her.

She doesn’t do this, though. She can’t. She can’t move aside from leaving the premises entirely. Numb.

After this, even when he’s recovered and there is no danger, she wouldn’t know how to associate with him. She was just so scared that he wouldn’t make it, that she would have to find a way to just go on living without her best friend. And Sokka would project such nonchalance that it would irk her, make her resent that casual attitude with everything she has without even realizing it because doesn’t he know just how much this messed her up?

Lol I love this question. I think that he knows he needs to give her space; he’s known this for forever, from the moment he realized that there was no shaking her when she put something in her head (this, being whatever has her upset). That said, he would, indeed, give her the space, but will also be trying to figure out ways to make it up to her or try to make her understand his point of view—of course, this depends on whatever it was that made her upset in the first place.

I can see him trying to conjure up little gifts, little things to make her crack a smile in the middle of her irritation with him lol. For instance, I can imagine him trying to cook for her and failing epically because I feel like Sokka is the type to either do amazingly in the kitchen but whenever he fails, he fails. He will burn water on those days lmaooo

But in the end, whatever he does, it works. He’s always apologetic, and he tends to see her point while also doing his best to help her understand his. There’s a lot of compromise after all is said and done, and that’s what makes them work I think.

But what if Toph and Sokka are out for a drive or a walk or something and she is heavily teasing him. Nothing out of the ordinary for them, but Sokka is feeling a particular way that day, and she’s just pushing buttons and he lets her push them, until she drives a final point that makes him just turn to her and go, Oh, yeah? And she challenges him with a raised brow. Yeah. She’s got a bit of a ‘what are you going to do about it’ tone to her voice, and man, that’s just driving him right home, isn’t it?

That said, he just stops walking abruptly or pulls over or whatever applies here and plants a kiss right on her shit-talking lips. He shocks her into silence for the first time that he’d ever experienced because Toph always has a response to everything. And when they pull away, he just kind of says something like You were saying?

She blinks and opens then closes and finally opens her mouth again before pulling him back down and kissing him again, until their chests burn and they’re nearly gasping for air—but even that seems impossible because pulling away is impossible.

4 - is there an au or trope that you haven't written before, but would want to try?

Something I haven’t tried in actual earnest is enemies to lovers. Like, I think that’s something I’d really like to try, where the “enemies” part of it all is very much in play, so that the “lovers” bit feels worked-for, do you know what I mean? Don’t want it to feel like a mere rivals to lovers or just a very brief stop in enemies territory; I’d want it to be more serious and deeper lol

For Tokka, might be hard unless I give into the impulse of writing a villain!toph au or merely a very twisted au outside our source text lol. But it’s something I’d try if there was interest mayhap

12 - what's a song or two you associate with Unboxing Desires and Other Miscellanies?

Gosh this is one of my favorite fics I’ve written; I’m so glad you picked this one lol. But I have so many songs I associate with this fic, and I remember them well because I made a whole playlist for my own benefit LOL. Notably, the one I associate the most with it is “I Always Knew” by The Vaccines and “From the Start” by Laufey for the mere reason that is in each of the titles. She’s always loved him, and so has he only it took him longer to take note of that lol

I also want to note that “I Always Knew” SCREAMS Tokka to me. From the moment I heard it on New Girl lol. Very them. And it’s probably my theme song for them in my head, I fear
