Happy Pride, all!
I've seen a lot of different scam/bot comments on AO3 lately, but this one has me stumped. What's the point of this?
is this a thing? has anyone done this yet?
I Don Recognize You Anymore
writing dialogue? easy.
describing where everyone’s standing during that dialogue and adding action tags? impossible.
The look that goes with the flat/deadpan 'really?'
god please someone tell me how to describe this expression in fiction writing without using the words 'pursed lips' and 'heavy lidded eyes' over and over again
(because sometimes the look doesn't even have pursed lips, and it's all in the eyes)
A few Team Avatar reminders (og series) because I think people tend to confuse canon and fanon a little too often:
- Aang was very mature and sensitive for his age (as he was forced to be). Most adults don’t have as strong and morally correct conviction as him, let alone most twelve year olds.
- Katara was a child. Regardless of how mature and strong she was, she was a little kid and a victim of the war, just like every other kid in the series.
- Sokka was incredibly smart, like ridiculously so (keep in mind he’s 15-16), and likely one of the smartest characters we encounter in atla. There are countless times the team would have been absolutely cooked without him (in most episodes, yes).
- Toph doesn’t hate being feminine, she hates being forced into a box. While she presents as a tomboy, the show also acknowledges her want to be taken seriously as a girl.
- Zuko is not reasonable or particularly smart. Most of his descisions are made based on emotion and his feelings in the moment. He’s not stupid at all, but he’s very much a passionate guy rather than a thinker (literally what his entire arc is based around, and imo what makes his arc that much better. He has to learn to he less impulsive).
Thinking about benders not being quite human
Firebenders with a slight glow to their eyes and whose body heat always seems just erring on feverish.
Waterbenders whose limbs are always cool to the touch who can stay underwater just a little too long without even aiding themselves with their bending
Earthbenders who are just a bit too resilient to physical blows, who can remain perfecrly still for just a bit too long
Airbenders who, no matter their physical frame, are far too light, whose voices effortlessly carry across vast distances
I was thinking about something really similar to this the other day. Like how bending might give people slightly superhuman resistance/defenses related to their element.
Firebenders being more resistant to burns (which would make Zuko's scar even more fucked up). Earthbenders having tougher bones. Waterbenders being more resistant to illnesses (and idk maybe their skin doesn't prune in water, which would be a pretty useless but funny superpower). Airbenders having better than average lung capacity or hearing.
What if the cataclysm that happened before Seven Havens takes place was Sozin's Comet returning, except the world leaders were worried someone might use it for evil again and coerced/persuaded Korra into trying to bend it away (yk, since it's space rock), but she lost control and it hit the planet.
Anyone interested in reading a 'Ruins of the Empire' fix-it fic? I mean, I'm writing it anyway lol, but just trying to gauge potential interest to motivate myself.

Wrangling Update - Avatar: The Last Airbender
Hello ATLA fans! With the recent changes to Fandom Metatags, a new change is coming to the way the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise fandom on AO3 is structured! Don’t worry, the existing fandom tags will remain as they are - this change will not impact your ability to search for works in specific fandoms (i.e. Legend of Korra, The Chronicles of the Avatar novels, etc.).
What is changing is that we are creating a new metatag for the fandom!
What is a metatag, you ask? Great question - think of metatags (and subtags) like file folders on your computer or in your Google Drive. In this analogy, the metatag is the top-level folder and the subtags are sub-folders that live inside that top-level folder.
New ATLA metatag: Avatar: The Last Airbender & Related Fandoms
All current and future ATLA-related fandoms will be sub-fandoms ("subtags") of the new Avatar: The Last Airbender & Related Fandoms fandom metatag. Currently, this includes:
Avatar: The Last Airbender (Cartoon 2005)
Avatar: Legend of Korra
Avatar: The Last Airbender: Chronicles of the Avatar Novels - Various
Avatar: The Last Airbender (Live Action TV 2024)
Avatar Legends (Roleplaying Game)
Avatar: The Last Airbender (Video Games 2006 2007)
Avatar: Realms Collide (Video Game)
There is no 2010 movie in Ba Sing Se The Last Airbender (2010)
As new ATLA franchise canon is released, those will be added as subfandoms as well. For more information on the hows and whys, keep reading below the cut!
Okay, so I'm writing something and I need to crowdsource an opinion. In past watches of LoK, I had the understanding that Suyin intended to assassinate Kuvira in her sleep (during Book 4 when Kuvira invaded Zaofu).
The phrases used are 'put an end to this' and 'take her out'. But the more I think about it, the more I really can't believe Su would enlist her teenage sons to help her kill their foster sister. Like, that's just fucked up. Su can be ruthless, and I don't doubt that she would go to extremes if there were no other option, but I don't think she would put that burden on anyone but herself.
So I went back and watched the episode. No one actually explicitly says she was going to kill her. The language implies it, but it also could be read that she was going to capture her. Remove her from the equation and force the army to stand down. Because killing Kuvira would be pointless?? Baatar Jr. would take her place and be hellbent on avenging her. Then Su would have to kill her own son lmao.
As a side note, Korra does say, "We have no idea where your mom is or what her plan is." So I think it's meant to be left open to interpretation.
Anyway, I'm just curious what other people think.
Was Suyin intending to assassinate Kuvira? Yes or no, no nuance.
Yes
No
Been thinking about Kuvira meeting Toph for the first time, as a kid living in Zaofu. Suyin couldn't get through to her, so she called in some backup.
Kuvira watched them talk quietly, heads together, probably about her. Adults always did that. Suyin still looked frustrated, but the old woman was calm. Finally, she nodded and approached Kuvira, though she stopped about fifteen feet away.
“All right, kid. Show me what you got.”
“What? I’m not going to fight you. You’re a blind old lady.”
“Oh?” One corner of her mouth turned up in amusement. “Not going to fight me, huh? Why not? Don’t think you’re strong enough?”
