We’re combining with a Waldorf school for summer programming and the director of their program was giving us some heads up about how the Waldorf kids are different from Mainstream educated kids. And like a lot of it was fairly understandable, albeit interesting (no plastic, screens, no music with lyrics, use of chimes and bells instead of alarms and whistles) but the thing that got me is that she said that the kids aren’t on the same reading level as mainstream students. That’s something to take in stride and you know, be aware of during summer, but the way she described it was that “they want to preserve children being children. So a kid can’t look at a tabloid and see war and bombs and start asking questions about it.” And look, maybe there’s an actual, scientific reason to start kids reading later, that could be a thing but I think it does a disservice to children to protect them from the troubles of the world on the basis of them “being kids”. Kids in places like Palestine, Ukraine, Iran, etc don’t have the luxury of blocking out war, why hide it from kids here?

One time when my dad was in the hospital they were testing his orientation to time and place and said "Okay and what year is it?" and he said "1995" (he had dementia). And the doctor and I unconsciously exchanged a Look because it was in fact uhhh 2024 😐 and dad saw that and so when the next doctor did the test a few hours later he said "uhhhh...nineteen...nintetyyyy.......seven...???" and I was like okay, well, that IS closer, you do have to give him that
