Once again, my dear friends, the Points are ten! For the tale of a thief and a cobbler which verdict, in the end?
Here in Italy a group of YouTubers managed to work together for a voicedub all dedicated to the cobbled version of “The Thief and the Cobbler”. I actually was more aware of just some of its elements: two versions exist, with the full edited version being the most complete and praised, and that there’s this ZigZag guy that talks in rhyme, voiced by none other than Vincent Price (of course, not that surpising!).
So, how was it? Let’s find out!
1) Ok, you sure this guy is not related to Wile E. Coyote? Everytime he’s on screen, it’s like watching a longer version of a Road Runner cartoon!
(Seriously, that’s a Wile E. Coyote pose right there!)
2) Wow, “By the Book” bandits! You don’t see that everyday!
3) Kid, you sure get tanned fast! As someone as white as mozzarella cheese, I can relate.
4) Man, live women are being used as a throne! Ok then! o_o
5) You big bad one, that army is so pointy that it’s a safety hazard! Sure it’d be a shame if something happened to it… *Tack does his thing* Told you.
6) *25 minutes later* Oh my gosh, it’s still going?? Ok, either Tack was incredibly lucky, or you One Eye dude just over did it with your army! I’m going with the latter.
7) Gold over girls; that thief’s got his mind straight! …or maybe he’s aromantic.
8) That old lady kinda reminds me of Mama Odie: same kind of kooky wisdom.
9) One Eye’s death: I sleep
Zigzag’s death: I’m looking!
You can’t even see him getting eaten alive: you just see his eyes and mouth. This only makes it even more surreal! He died as he lived: rhyming all the way. Truthfully, a death befitting of a Vincent Price’s character.
10) For being such a pipsqueak, kid’s got a deep voice! No wonder he was using it sparingly: takes everyone by surprise! ^_^
Ok, so the movie’s over! How was it?
You can definitely see how much ambition there was behind the project: the animation is incredibly fluid and detailed, especially considering everything was hand-drawn! Which is kinda its weak point: sometimes the story takes a halt to focus on ways the characters (especially the Thief) can interact with their surroundings, kinda padding the story, which is a simple tale, albeit one that works.
Ok, I could be VERY biased, of course: the thing is, I really enjoyed Zigzag’s character, and everytime he was onscreen, he was always captivating, for the way he moves, and his rhyming, and I wanted the story to continue so I could enjoy his presence some more.
(BTW this guy’s got six fingers… HE’S THE AUTHOR OF THE JOURNALS!!)
There’s amazing work on Tack and the Thief: since both characters are mute, character animation is everything, from the eyes to their movements, making their performances really enjoyable and endearing (even tho’, admittedly, I often felt the Thief’s scenes were stretched a lot, but usually those were the scenes where the animation gave its all, so that’s a good point to make) and this movie is very good if you’re searching tips about animating silent characters.
Anyway, in its own rights, this movie deserves to be watched: while the story is simple and panned, the animation and work behind it is so amazing that anyone in the art field NEEDS to watch it, either for artistic or historic means. If you are able to watch it, please do: it’ll be a very worthwhile experience!
