TOA Canon [Black Eagles Faculty at the Officers Academy/TWISTD Member]

She does not know how she was brought to Fodlan, but she knows that she must make the most of this second chance that she has been given. Awoken by the Agarthans, she hides herself in plain sight as a member of the Black Eagles Faculty. She is intent on finding a way to bring Lord Sombron to this place as well, using the Agarthan facilities and allying with them for the scientific ability they can bring her. Other than that, she intends to pass on the magic she has learned throughout her long lifetime onto the students, even if she is not the kindest at most times.

Broken Pieces Never Fit Again [Four Hounds]

Her spine has long since gone rod-straight, gooseflesh taking claim of her skin. She had seen both of them in separate spaces; knew, in a distant sort of way, that they were all here. That this was possible.

Though that didn't seem real at all. This doesn't. Marni shifts her weight from one suddenly too-heavy greave to the other, eyes darting from one's godawful grin to the other's somehow worse glower.

"Uh, yeah... Yeah. I got it."

Grateful for the distraction, Marni pivots on her heel as directed. It's a real mess in here, all smoke and rubble and noises of pain too near to be ignored. She tries not to think too hard about the way her fingers tremble as they curl around a smaller chunk of what probably used to be a wall, to prevent herself from turning back and looking long enough at her old family to remember that she misses them.

With a huff, the debris is hefted up and into her arms. Eyes straight ahead, she walks it a few yards away before dumping it on the floor and returning for another.

Rinse and repeat. Easy. Just tune out their voices, pretend they aren't there. They aren't there. They aren't there.

Her fingers slip, the splintered corner of an old shelf falls from her arms with a crack. It's instinct to jerk her head to the left, to draw her shoulders closer and wait for someone to chide her.

For one miserable moment her gaze locks with Zephia's. Marni swallows. You're not hers to scold anymore.

She fumbles to find her hold once more, to look at anything other than her.

"What does it matter?" She grumbles, kicking the freshly discarded piece of wood. "We're not here to heal them, anyway. We're here to move all this crap."

Lips screw into a frown, staring down at where her boot has added another crack to the wood's grain. "Not like anyone else is helping."

"Is that truly why you think we're here, Marni?" Zephia sneers down at the girl, trying to bury away remaining affection that she may have held for her. Just because that was what Mauiver had told her to do, did not mean it was the only thing.

"Or do you all just think me not kind enough to want to help?" She feigns a sorrowful expression, before starting to laugh, "I mean, we do not even have a full grasp on their situation here. They can't exactly... talk if they are so injured."

And she needed them to talk, if she were to be able to acquire their little experiment here for her benefactors. It certainly would not do her well to return empty handed. Beyond wanting to acquire this power for those aforementioned benefactors though, Zephia herself was quite curious. No one could blame her for that, could they?

"If you wish to dig about in the rubble all day, then by all means, don't let me stop you. I, however, do wish be finding some answers, at some point." She leans down, idly picking up a charred piece of rock and throwing it a few times between her hands. Not for no reason, of course, though it may have certainly looked like that. Magic still remained, left behind in the ruins of the failed experiment. Not enough to get a clear idea of what had happened without talking to someone, but enough to know that the spell that had caused all of this had been devasting - even if she had not already known that information beforehand.

She sighs, moving to lean against a piece of wall that remained (somehow) standing amongst the rubble. She waves a hand lazily in Griss' direction, gesturing towards Marni and her sad little attempt to clean up all of that debris by herself. Zephia almost felt bad, just almost. Not enough to go help with her own hands, of course, but just barely bad enough to direct Griss to help her. The faster it was done, the faster she would be able to focus on her true intentions here. And time was something that she did so hate to waste.

Valter never really rested. If he wasn’t out on a mission, he was training. If not training, he was preparing himself to train—that, or he was sleeping. There were meals also, but those were brief. Very little time was spared for anything else (unless, of course, he found it interesting enough).

From what he understood of this mission, it was to uncover the specifics of some weapon smuggling—first if it was true and what the mechanics were if so. It was interesting enough to him, though he could admit there were better uses of his time. (At the very minimum, it may lead to some degree of conflict, and that was always alluring.)

So far, he hadn’t picked up on much, but the darkest parts of people never showed themselves to the light. It would certainly take more than a cursory glance to bear witness to illegal activity, and that meant hunting for clues—trying to find incriminating evidence. (Not to invent something as an excuse for bloodshed, of course, but to do his job. As he always strives to.)

He can’t stand his partner though—if he may compare, she was even worse than Glen. (At least that man had an idea of his place.) She takes charge of the situation as if it is her rightful position, and the very notion irks him; he has the sense to remain quiet though, merely simmering from a distance.

“ Don’t call me that, ” he seethes, before brushing past the woman. “ And I know what to do—I’m not some fool like the rest of you. ”

"Don't talk back to me. If anything that for sure makes you the fool." Was she not the one in charge of this mission? (Though that certainly made those at the monastery trusting her with something so... serious quite the fools indeed. She certainly had no intention of returning with the weapons and giving them to her employers from the light.)

Heels click against the stone of the alleyway, a return to form slinking about in the shadows coming easily back to her. She would be all too eager to destroy the little operation they were after, once they found it of course. Zephia did not care if her knightly companion would be inclined to agree with that approach, because he would have no say in the matter. Not that she would care to obey if he did.

"Hmph. Does such a noble knight not question what a woman like myself would want out of this? Or do you simply... yearn for the bloodshed as well? I do not intend to leave a single one of those arm dealers alive, once we are to find them. Such little rats, scampering around where they don't belong should be... exterminated."

As if she was any better. Once the clearing of the den was done, she would provide her more... secretive employers with the weapons, a mere price to pay for being able to continue her work. But what did this man want out of this? Zephia was all too curious to find out.

So she truly isn’t a human. Strange… What could someone like that possibly stand to gain from a simple teaching position? It makes little to no sense to her. Any motivations she can come up with don’t seem to line up quite right. Despite her efforts to give this one a fair chance, she still can’t help but feel unsettled.

Continuing to completely withhold information is getting her nowhere, though. Her lack of humanity is obvious enough even to the most normal of people, even if she herself doesn’t know exactly what she may be instead. If this stranger is as motivated to find out as she seems to be, it’s only a matter of time before she hears it from someone else if she doesn’t from Sothis herself. It’s not much of a secret anyway.

“What I may or may not appear to be is another matter entirely, but no, I do feel ‘human’ is one thing that can be easily stricken from the list of possibilities.” She sighs, absentmindedly fiddling with one of the ribbons in her hair. Every time she has to have this conversation is just another painful reminder of how little she actually knows.

Perhaps this one may know something. Maybe that’s why what she’s sensing that’s so familiar, but the one before her rings no bells at all. “…but you do not seem to be of a life form native to Fodlan at all, to my knowledge… What exactly might you be, if I may ask?”

Zephia pauses in shock for a moment, staring down at the small girl. She was not human, but oddly enough, she did not seem to know what she was. Zephia frowns, twirling a long stand of hair idly in her finger as she contemplated what to say. Was it not obvious to anyone else that this girl had some sort of divinity? Even herself? Zephia would have thought that not noticing such a thing about your own soul would rest well within the realm of impossible.

"Mn. Yes, I am... not from Fodlan, but it will remain my home for the forseeable future." Not as if she had anything waiting for her back in Elyos anyway. Not that she ever wished to return there.

"As for what... I am a mage dragon of some renown in my homeland. Not as if such a thing means anything here in Fodlan, but I still wish to remain proud of such lineage."

She is much too close- her nails dig into the small of his back as he lifts his chin slightly to avoid shrinking away from her attempts to intimidate him. It doesn’t quite help- it would always be easier to instigate violence than ease concerns, and she has proven to be quite enthusiastic for the former… and detrimental to the latter. 

He does not fight when she tugs him forward, already feeling that coming onto this particular mission was a mistake. She tries to incite the crowd, and he remains silent even as the villagers murmur amongst themselves with this new information. Surprisingly, they remain calm… perhaps it was due to her own horns that they simply assumed that they were similar.

He smiles, calmly, as the villagers turn to him for a response- perhaps that was what they were searching for, mere entertainment in the form of two bickering on how to best help them. He does not rise to the bait- he knows when to take a step back and conserve his energy. Though, one hand rests on Creiddylad, at the ready.

“Then, do tell. What action do you promise?”

Zephia clicks her tongue softly in annoyance. She had rather hoped that the crowd gathered would have a bit more of a reaction. Or that they would at least be convinced that standing around talking about for all eternity wasn't going to provide any concrete results.

"Well, for starters, a little less talking about the situation would do a little good." She towers over Sephiran, hand on her hip as she cocked it to one side. They just kept arguing and arguing around in circles (in that odd little way that humans did), and by the end of this, they would all probably just go home in disappointment and stew while doing nothing about it.

"Is my opinion already not quite... clear? Must I repeat it again to get it through to you?" She had already been annoyed, but she was beginning to lean closer and closer to being truly angry. Lightning crackles at the tips of her fingers as her annoyance continues to grow. At this rate, she would much rather kill all of the villagers than listen to them continue to argue. If all of them were dead, there would be no argument about which deserved the water - or whatever this squabble was about in the first place.

"Is it that hard to make a decision anyway? Just pick one and be done with it. Does it even matter?"

Sothis frowns as well, just barely holding herself back from lecturing this strange individual on her manners. Who does she think she is, laughing at her like that?! It is an insult to her in every sense of the word, and only further fuels her suspicions that something isn’t right here. What sort of teacher would laughat someone just for asking a question? An extremely poor one, at the very least.

“Excuse you! My comprehension of humanity is perfectly adequate! More than adequate, thank you!” The answer is a little too quick. She doesn’t know why the professor would ask her something like this, but she’s not about to confirm whatever it is she’s thinking. “I… just do not understand the obsession with stylistic choices that will fade into obscurity within a matter of months at the most. I had assumed this was an attempt to ‘get ahead’, as it were.”

Though… maybe if her horns are as real as she claims, she may not be human herself? Maybe she’s just looking for someone who can relate, and is just going about it in an accidentally suspicious way. There’s nothing wrong with that. The Academy would never hire anyone who could potentially be a danger to the students, would they? She’s probably just being paranoid.

But forcing out that assumption could go wrong in too many ways, and she can’t completely let her guard down just to give someone the benefit of the doubt. That’s idiotic. Best to give her the chance to admit the truth herself, if that’s truly what she wants. “Though I will admit… Humans coming with horns such as yours is a concept that I am unfamiliar with… That is what you are, yes? A human?”

"Human?" Zephia scoffs. If this girl could see her, and still think that she was anywhere close to human, then she must have been more daft than Zephia orignally thought, "I am about as far from human as one could get." She would far outlive most of the humans that she could think of, especially after being revived by the power of the Agarthans. (Which she could certainly argue brought even further away from being considered even close to human.)

"I have never seen a human with horns myself, and I have lived for a... terribly long time. I believe it simply must not be possible, dear." With how divine this girl seemed, she most likely wasn't human either. They could have that at least in common in their misunderstanding of humanity.

"You're not human either, are you? I would not believe that you possibly could be. Am I... right in that assumption?

No matter where you go, everyone seems convinced that these are unsafe times and everyone wants a little extra security— some want it directly in their hands even. It’s no shock then that there are rumors of an arms dealer smuggling weapons through the port. If left unchecked, something could happen between civilians or worse, all these weapons could be used to outfit a nearby noble’s independent army, giving an opportunity for a more widespread assault. Finding out where these weapons are coming from and who they’re going to might be in the continent’s best interest then. [Grants Reason +1]

Zephia sulks between dark alleys in the port town, a not so little shadow along with her. Fine, so they wanted her to uncover this arms dealer and accquire the weapons for them. That was fine. She could do that. It was simple, truly, compared to many of the things that she had done for her Lord Sombron.

However, what she truly dislikes is the man who she has dragged along with her, out of the pretense of needing someone else on such an... important mission. She had not been truly paying attention when picking her companion, just grabbing the first knight she had seen and going before anyone else could complain or stop her.

She had certainly not anticipated how... rancid his aura would end up being though. She's almost tempted to go back to the monastery, and find a new partner. But she is too stubborn to even think of doing so, so she is stuck with him. Perhaps she shall be able to find an excuse to get rid of him. For now though, she had to focus on finding those weapons. It would not do her... well to disappoint her masters in this world.

She stares down at the man, magenta eyes boring into his own cerulean ones. And she humphs softly to herself, creeping further into the alleyway while gesturing for him to follow. "Come now. We don't have any time to waste, darling."

“Mage… dragons?” Dheginsea’s brow furrowed as he squinted at her. Not out of any scour or scrutiny but rather, out of puzzlement. For Dheginsea could not fathom a laguz using beorc magic of any kind. Let alone a whole lineage...

Perhaps, in Elyos, the term ‘mage’ is one used to describe those with an affinity to magic of one’s own kind. Surely she was referring to this… and not that of the beorc invented one. Surely… right?

“Could you clarify what you mean by mage? In Tellius, it’s not a term… associated with us laguz. So I am unsure if you mean magic of our own kind or magic of, what most here refer to as, humans…?”

Zephia pauses to think for a moment, wondering silently about this man's country. Perhaps mage meant something different there than it did within Elyos. Of course, there were human mages, but they occupied an entirely different space than the mage dragons that had once been.

"I suppose the closest would be magic of our own making," She pauses, letting lightning crack idly at the tips of her fingers as a small showing her capabilities, "Latent magic runs through our veins from the very moment we are born. It is an inherent mastery of magic without even needing to train. Unlike human mages."

"Does that perhaps make more sense to you?"

The voice makes her inwardly cringe, the words spoken sickeningly sweet to the point of feeling more like a poisonous inflection than a comforting one. Coupled with the ominous feeling she got from merely looking at the professor, it’s nearly enough to make even her slightly uneasy. 

She doesn’t like it.

Yet without any reason as to why, she isn’t exactly in a position to do anything about it. Running would not only be rude if she ended up being wrong in her feeling and this really was just an innocent faculty member, but it would also prevent her from gathering more information if her intuition later proved correct. To her, the smartest thing she can do is feign ignorance to anything being amiss. Which isn’t exactly hard, since she doesn’t even know what ‘amiss’ means in this context.

“Ah— I— uhm… yes, I do have something of an inquiry, that is correct.” She only hopes her voice isn’t shaking. “What exactly is that… thing, atop your head? I’m afraid I’ve… never seen anything quite like it before. Is it a part of some sort of new trend I have yet to hear about?”

Zephia does not hold herself back from bursting into laughter, the magenta tassels hanging from her horns swaying in the breeze as she titled her head back. This girl was truly strange.

"It's not a piece of headwear, dear," She gestures towards the horns that decorate her head. She presumes they were not there when she was born, and simply grew in as she aged, but she did not have enough memories of her early childhood to say for certain. Nor did she remember if this trait had been unique in her village or not, "They are simply a part of my body. Not so easily removed as a piece of clothing or the... like." She swats at one of the tassels, like some of the playful cats at the monastery liked to if she knelt beside them as she passed, still chuckling softly to herself.

"Why... whatever made you think it was some sort of trend? Do you see anyone else around with anything of this manner? Or is it something more... mysterious?" She frowns, still unsure why the idea of this girl felt familiar. It felt as though she should be doing something with her (of the variety of her... other employers), but she was completely unsure as to what.

"Perhaps you do not... understand humanity?" The little girl did seem terribly divine in one or another. Zephia swore silently to herself that she would get some sort of answer as to what sort of divinity by the end of this little chat. She would be entirely unsatisfied if she did not.

The assumption was fairly right, everyone needed an obedient mount, but for what interested Minerva the most, was the strong bonding that you could create with a creature such a wyvern: they were bizarre animals, had their own attitude and favouritisms and despite they couldn't communicate by words, they always found a way to manifest their needs and love. They truly were incredible creature and the redhead couldn’t renounce to their company, even comparing to humans.

“Obedient, but also very trustworthy and loyal” she added, staring at Zephia’s wyvern, who actually was very calm and relaxed, comparing to Frejya, who was a very free spirit most of the time, but she knew how to behave in front of strangers, especially if mommy wanted her to be cautious and attentive: even if they were two and well-equipped, you would never know if anything dangerous might happen all of sudden. Yet, besides that, the travelling was proceeding fairly good, no interruptions, no stops and midday was slowly approaching, as well as the hunger in her stomach.

As she gave a look around, she spotted a small clearing on the right side of their path and since they were highly on time for their schedule, she deemed to be wise and profitable to stop by to make a quick food-break. She halted the movement of her wyvern and as her companion noticed her sudden stop, she gave a small smile, pointing out the clearing.

“Look, since we’re marching for a while now, maybe we can get advantage of that clearing for a small break?” she tempted, not exactly knowing if her companion actually needed a break from their travelling or if she wanted to go on with the advancement –in the end, she was the one who wanted to stop by and have a quick lunch on the way.

“Our wyverns can certainly take advantage of that little pause too, since they’re doing all the hard-work for us” she chuckled with a slight smile, caressing the long neck of her beloved creature, perfectly knowing she would actually enjoyed a little eating break – and to be honest, it has been a while since Frejya had been observing and sniffing  the jerky meat in Minerva’s pocket.

Zephia wonders: how long had it truly been since she hatched Cherche's egg with her own two hands? Certainly a great multitude of years. Cherche was certainly not young, but she was nowhere near the end of her lifespan either. Middle-aged, at best. The old girl was not as rambunctious as she had once been in her youth, experienced and having seen many battles during her time with Zephia.

(It was easier to care for her at times than anything else. A purpose, something to care about - long before Griss (and the other Hounds) had been there, long before they were even born - other than a wholeheartedly loyalty to a Lord who had not even been within the living world at the time.)

"A break would be lovely, dearest." She smiles down at the redhead, keeping a careful eye on their surroundings even as she walks to the clearing, leaves crunching underneath her feet. Cherche - ever the obdient girl - also stays on alert, sticking close to Zephia as she took a seat upon the stump of a fallen tree.

"Ah. Say, have you heard the... rumors? Of petty thieves and ruffians making trouble in this area? I suppose we should stay on guard, even as we rest."

"For you, my lady." Sigurd presented the tray to the woman before him with a bow. The platter is displayed with a variety of finely roasted poultry meats, cooked in a traditional Chalphy style of one-within-the-other. The skin of the turkey is crispy, and the fats from the duck have marinated both the chicken within and the turkey without. There are cloves and lemon slices studding the plate, combining to form a melange of rich flavors. The choice of which piece to take is up to the feaster – there is plenty to go around!

He did not know this woman - not intimately, although she had approached him once before, long ago after the Battle of Eagle and Lion. If his memory was fresh and fuzzy as peach skin then, then what he has gained since formed a static around his mind. Still, he recalled her, thanks in no small part to the curved moon horns ornamenting her crown.

"I must thank you for coming, my lady. We may not be friends at this moment, but I have seen you move around the party. You are striking, if I may say, and the respect you command is admirable. I hope this, and everything else, has been satisfactory, and that you've enjoyed your time this evening."

"My, my, you're quite the sweet talker, aren't you Lord Sigurd?" Zephia was familiar with his visage, as the emblem Sigurd. It was rather odd to her, to have made his acquaintence here at the academy. The real thing was quite different from the silent emblem she had grown used to. Though, would that not be the case with any of the emblems?

"Your own presence is quite palpable." She smirks, tapping her fingers idly against her arm. If the real Sigurd was even half as strong as the emblem, then he would certainly command her respect.

"Thank you for hosting, my lord. It was quite... enjoyable."

As Freyja takes a seat, she looks over at the dragon woman with slight confusion "That dish must be incredibly important... don't take this the wrong way but, it reminds me of the children I would-.." Freyja hesitated on weither or not tell Zephia the truth of her origin "-..The children I would take care off. I was a... temporary mother for most of them" Was that even more suspicious than what she was originally planning on saying?

She decides not to take it back as she stares at the ingredients being placed out on the counter. Freyja stands and walks over, pointing at the "stove". She sighs "That thing sparks from time to time, I suggest lighting it from a far to reduce the chances of being burned. I could do it if you like" Freyja's hand hovered over the opening. She closed her eyes as small wisps of magic travel towards the center until a small flame appears.

The childern who were there still applaud at such a feat!

"Important... yes I suppose it may have been once." Zephia can only vaguely recall her mother, through blurry memories long left to rot and moments that she didn't care to remember. (Sometimes there was a longing in her chest, for the family that she had lost. To feel that love that was now foreign to her again. She tries to ignore that longing, to the best of her ability.)

Zephia smiles as Freyja lights the oven, a small hum of approval escaping her lips. "I could have done that dear. I do not fear being burned." Her talents laid much more with the crackling of thunder, but fire was not an abstract concept to her. Magic came far too easily to her anyway.

She grabs a small, rather dented bowl - nothing seemed to be in perfect shape down here, but she didn't mind all that much - tossing her dry ingredients inside and beginning to mix them.

"You mentioned being a mother to some children. Was it that you were simply taking care of them, or was there... more to it?" Freyja's words had almost reminded her of her own dear little hounds, the children - excluding Mauvier, because he was far from being anything close to her child - that she had cared for so dearly. Perhaps Freyja had once been similar to her.

How intriguing, Sara muses. All sorts of interesting beings had deigned to gather for the evening.

This one, however, is dangerous in the way of poisonous fauna decorated in bright patterns and inviting colors that command attention. Enchanting like the ephemeral apparitions conjured from the oldest tomes. She reaches forward merely to pat an arm and retracts her touch as though burned when skin meets skin.

"Ah, because of your beauty, I mistook you for a spirit." Something bound to an ancient book and summoned by powerful mages. "You have that aura about you certainly. I sense formidable magic."

"A spirit? My, how flattering." Zephia smirks down at the girl, though for once she does not mean (much) ill will. It's rather cute, actually, that this young maiden would think her so worthy of complimenting in such a manner.

“B-but anyways… Where is anyone else like you? I don’t just mean like in terms of more like you around the monastery, no. I’m pretty sure you’re not native. "Rude? Me? Never." Zephia says, smirking. Not that she cared what this little boy ended up thinking of her by the end of this. She was simply not in the mood to be lectured by mere babies compared to her.

"... My village is gone." There is no need to say more, if this child has any ounce of brain in his head, it would easy enough to infer what she meant from her words. There had been other mage dragons, of course, like Lady Veyle's mother, but she had never felt a sense of kinship with them, not truly. (Not in the way that she wanted.)

"It does not bother me though, that I may be the last of my kind in this world. It is meaningless to not just live instead of being weighed down by guilt that you are alive and other such useless feelings."

"I am from Goldoa, a country of dragons. Within the continent of Tellius. Though, I've only lived the majority of my life there..." He paused for a moment. Looking down at the dark beverage he held. Stirring it in contemplation.

"I was born elsewhere. Somewhere that's been swept deep within the ocean for several centuries now." He took a brief sip, His face remained neutral. As if a past tragedy was a simple fact and nothing more to him in this conversation.

"I am Dheginsea, The first and former king of Goldoa. And, you?" He looked at her expectantly. For It did not fail his notice that she had not mentioned her name yet...

The idea of a country inhabited solely and competely by dragons was fascinating. She had no memory anymore if Gradlon had once been like that, not that it mattered anyway.

"Mm. So your home is gone as well." Not that Zephia held any nostalgia or lingering regret for the village of her childhood. It was long gone, thousands of years in her past. (She wished she could forget entirely, that she had once had a true family, even if she could no longer remember what their love had felt like. She didn't need such feelings in her life anyway.)

"Zephia," she swirls her cup around casually, staring down at the wine inside it, "I have no... fancy title, but my lineage comes from that of powerful mage dragons."
