Hey artists, C. Spike Trotman, founder of Iron Circus Comics, just posted an invaluable thread on depicting different types of black hair. I’d do the thing where you screencap the whole thread and post it but it’s just too long (which is great because it’s a whole lot of useful information!) Give her a follow while you’re there.
Anyway, go check it out. I just wanted to save it and share it because I didn’t know how much I didn’t know!
This is an amazing resource, not only for artists, but for writers too! I love this!
{ID - tweet from @/Iron_Spike that reads, “Black Hair for Non-Black Artists: a Cheat Sheet Thread. Hi, folks! Just spur-of-the-moment decided to put together some reference for folks who want to draw/model black characters in their work, but arent confident they won’t make simple, obvious mistakes w/r/t black hair. END ID}
I noticed in the comments that some people can’t see the thread, so I took screenshots for y'all!
More will come in reblogs, since tumblr has an image limit

37 and 55 for oc ask game
37- do they have any difficulties when it comes to intimacy
i think when in the beginning of a relationship absolutely. but as time grows nico becomes very like. needy. theyre kinda touchstarved, they like holding hands or hugs and they really like sex once theyve overcome their initial shyness.
but after death + resurrection nico definitely has a hard time being intimate. theyre afraid of touching people, or hurting them, and of being touched.
55- how much harm can your oc take from others before they put an end to it
a lot. nicos meek and shy and i think from growing up with their father and brother in an angry house of men, they really just. retract into themselves. as well, being just like an odd kid they have trouble standing up for themselves or putting them first. i think with a partner who is patient and understanding, nico begins to be able to speak up for themselves more as they become more confident
5 + 13
5- what's your oc birth order in their family and how has that affected them growing up
wonderful i can talk about nicos freak of a brother
nico is the youngest child! they have one older brother who is like, 15 or so years older than they are! per their families traditions, the youngest child (usually a daughter) is named for the previous one. so nico was name after their aunt (their deadname) their aunt was the previous sacrifice of the ritual they went through, tho ofc things were different with nico. so bc nico was 'special' and 'destined' for this path at the end of their life, they were like. i dont want to say coddled, bc it wasn't really, but to him, he saw nico getting special attention. he was jealous and angry at nico about it, and also weirdly obsessive. hes a freak whose always scared nico, and was the one who kidnapped and murdered nico for the cult ritual to offer their body up to the cults god
so uh. it affected them pretty heavily.
13- how important is hygiene and tidiness are in your oc's life
pretty important! nico showers often, and they like to keep their apartment neat and tidy since they rarely leave it sometimes
7 and 9 for the oc ask game? 👀
7- name one special and one mundane thing about your oc
special... im trying to think of anything other than the Cult Stuff, because its not really special. its more like... a designation of fate? the powers they get, the posession, its nothing special, something horrible was done to them in order for that to happen. i think... bc nico eventually gets magic due to the possession of the entity inside of them- the magic maniofests as death and rot- touching things can literally melt the skin off a body, rust a car- etc. i think eventually, as nico learns to use their abilities, it becomes more natural, more healing almost, as their magic shifts or they learn from a teacher or smth
mundane is that nico writes fanfiction in their free time! they really enjoy writing :-)
9- what is something your oc have too much of and something they have too little of
too much fear and too little bravery

i'd like to add that the shadow color isnt necessarily dictated entirely by the primary light source, but the bounce light! so for the example of a sunny environment, the reason the shadows are blue are because of the light from the blue sky reflects across the environment; but, if the character were to be under tree cover, the bounce light would be coming from the leaves and thus the shadow would look greener.
Yee yee!!! You got it right on the nose!
Bounce light is something I didn't cover but I adore it!
Gotta work on my bounce light 💪

James Gurney is an absolute master and gives really good clarity on colour techniques. Yes, it is traditional paint focused, but the principles are the same. Yes it is informed by the environmental colour but as a painting technique it is achieved this way!
I would also suggest that in digital processing, rather than apply a regular colour layer at a mid opacity, try out the different types of layers, Eg. Screen or Multiply. This can give you at least a starting point to help direct your colour palette.
Layer Blend Modes are so so so important to working in digital art. There's a ton of math that goes into figuring out how the layers should blend together, which is why some of the modes you can pick are literally called Multiply, Add, Divide, and Difference (that's subtraction). The graphics software takes the color values of your base and blend layers and runs a calculation to get your resulting layer appearance. The ones that don't have specifically mathematical sounding names are still doing calculations, but they're more complicated (think linear Algebra and higher). Some of them, like dodge and burn, are named for actual photo editing techniques.
While it's not super important to know about the mathematical side of blend modes, I think it's worth knowing at least enough about how each of the categories of blend modes works and why they do what they do; if for no other reason than having a starting point when you start experimenting with them in your work.
An overview of the basic blend modes and how they work from Genevieve's Design Studio: Accessible with minimal color knowledge; practical and illustration focused. https://youtu.be/kMc87hQrJd0?si=TWCB365pKSfWS8p0. (16 minutes) This creator also has a ton of free resources you can download, including a Blend Modes cheatsheet, but fair warning: you have to create an account to get them!
Want to learn even more about the math-y stuff? It has great film visuals! A video from FilmmakerIQ: You need some basic knowledge of RGB color models, understanding of values/luma, and at least a tenuous understanding of Algebraic formulas. Another tutorial I‘ve made, about digital brushwork this time!

I've opened a shop. Come take a look!
