Dear fellow castaway, the boats are going down with spouting belches all over the Atlantic. Someone’s years are sinking over there; another’s sense of self is splintering like a wooden boat. And we have gone down too to where even the phosphorous eels can’t light the way, nor the Gulf Stream warm and soothe the choppy bottom.

We alone have buoyed up yet. This rubber raft we’re bouncing in is like a trampoline. 0 shipmate, my shipmate, there are no search planes but we can build a magic boat— a submarine with code books, escape hatches, clean sheets, and maybe some fresh air.

Surely by the end of summer the sea will be all tuckered out and we can rise whale-wise and spout out our balms. Our magic boat might be a lunging nuclear Enterprise launching us like high-flying admirals to parachute on the capitals of gaiety.
