You walked into the pristine laboratory, the warm lights low and your shoes making gentle clicks on the linoleum floor. You anxiously looked around the room, taking in each piece of lab equipment. This was the latest you had ever been to the research area.
A voice snaps you from your observations.
"What do you want?" His voice was deeper, more tired than what you were used to hearing. "The girls are already asleep." He leaned against a countertop, his labcoat folded and hanging off his arm.
"Oh, uh..." You stammer. His tie is undone, each end draped over his chest. "I was just coming to see if there was anything to clean up. And to check on the spore specimen you developed." He sighs once you finish speaking.
"Leave both of those things to me." He says. He sets his lab coat down on the counter, then continues to lean against it, gazing at you with tired gray eyes. "You shouldn't have come here this late. You know it's out of your permitted hours."
You sigh. You look down at the ground for a moment, waiting for the words to come to you. It takes a moment, that's for sure. "Well..." Your voice trails off. "I know. I just, uhm, need a place to stay for a while. Is that okay?"
He pauses. You can't quite read his face.
"So, you came to my lab?"
"And not to my doorstep?"
You didn't know what to say to that. Of course you didn't. Why would you? You try to talk, but it comes out as incoherent stammering.
After a moment, he sighs. He looks tired, almost defeated. He pinches the bridge of his nose.
"Come on, let's just go to the house, if you really need a place to stay for the night." He grumbles. "You can sleep on the couch. Just, don't disturb the girls. Please. Some nights it's hell trying to get them to sleep."
