#i awaken from my slumber because SOMEONE is WRONG on the INTERNET and this CANNOT STAND #(i mean ok mostly probably wrong according to my knowledge)#(if anyone knows any better please let me know all of this is from a hobbyist calligrapher's pov and i believe #that for example the paleographers probably have a different organizational scheme going on and perhaps different names for scripts)#(at least this graphic calls them scripts +1 pt for that)#ANYWAY #FIRST #as much as i love the rustic capital representation #and i do seriously love it #it stuck out to me because surely that is not a medieval script?#mr. stan knight puts rustic captials as starting in the 1st century #continuing to be used for manuscripts through the roman period #and then used as a contrasting script up to the start of the gothic period #so like i guess ok my first instinct was technically wrong #that specific image though is from mr. knight's book and is of the Codex Vaticanus (ms. lat. 3225) c. AD 400 #so like VERY early middle ages though #i am side-eyeing its inclusion anyway #ok SECOND #to my eye the scripts marked “uncial” and “insular” both look like what i have always seen referred to as “insular half-uncial”#“insular” is not a common name for a script to my knowledge #and “uncial” is a little less ornate--mr. knight points to the St Cuthbert Gospel as an example #the “m” form and the suggestion of thickkk tasty wedges makes me lean toward insular half-uncial on the “uncial” marked manuscript #anyway THIRD #i am fully unqualified to comment on the remaining 5 images as the extreme number of subtly different gothic scripts confounds me #HOWEVER #this DOES mean that i am qualified to say that simply naming a script “gothic” and calling it a day #is NOT RIGHT #of all the complaints i am most on solid ground with this one #i would probably label that a batarde although like honestly what do i know i see a slightly bendy gothic and say: is this a batarde #anyway i am truly shocked that rustics made it to the list and not gothic textura

Ugh. Chiyoh. I do get frustrated sometimes with the way she’s relegated to nothing more than a helpmeet to Will and Hannibal, because I think even the meagre arc she gets in canon still offers more potential than is generally acknowledged in the fandom. But I do think the question of how she might aid Will and Hannibal’s escape and be something of an accomplice to the shady stuff they get up to, and what kind of dynamics that might bring up with both of them, is genuinely interesting!

And the thing that lingers on my mind is her presence at the end of Digestivo, where she watches Hannibal get taken away through her rifle scope but doesn’t interfere. Which makes me think she must have had some sort of conversation with Hannibal after their conversation clearing the air about Mischa, and after Hannibal leaves the house post-Will Breakup #2, because he must have informed her of what he was going to do. And he must have reassured her that he had faith that Will would eventually come around and break him out.

Which is really fascinating, because we see her get Will’s side of the story re: his relationship with Hannibal onscreen - she learns, broadly speaking, that Will accessed a part of himself with Hannibal that he’d never been able to understand before, and that he feels that he must resist the pull of that identification. And I can only imagine that what Hannibal tells her of his relationship with Will, in this context, is similar to the tack that Hannibal’s leaning on throughout Wrath of the Lamb - that Will can’t live without him, that he can trying to walk away but he will give in eventually.

And because Chiyoh is wavering on what to do throughout her arc but repeatedly settles on saving and protecting Hannibal, on honouring her bond with him, it stands to reason that she believes him about that. @menciemeer and I have discussed in the past the fact that Chiyoh seems very drawn in by the narratives Hannibal weaves, as evidenced by her devotion to Mischa’s memory despite never having met her in life. My assumption is that she’s drawn in by Hannibal’s narrative of who and what Will is in the same way. Mencie also raised the possibility in this thread that Chiyoh is very invested in stability and very wary of chaos and uncertainty - and with that in mind, imo it’s possible that she’s invested in Will giving in to Hannibal’s influence because she believes that Hannibal might steady him and keep his more impulsive side in check. (And it also means that more emphasis within their group dynamic is on Will accepting the parts of himself that Hannibal brings out in him, so that she doesn’t have to think about the parts of herself that Will forcefully drew out.)

The last part is why I can’t really buy the post-canon dynamic of Chiyoh being antagonistic towards Will specifically because she still thinks he’s a threat to Hannibal’s safety. If Will has joined Hannibal, then that threat has been more or less neutralized. She’s got plenty of reasons to be wary of or outright antagonistic towards Will, but I’m convinced those would be much more related to Will destabilizing the little environment she’d built with the prisoner and coercing her into violating her most stringently held rule about taking a life.

#ah ok allow me to experience some chiyoh thoughts #there's something about the fact that #her imago of hannibal is also incorrect #(especially if you are as invested as i am in the Prisoner Was Innocent theory which is: very)#but also just like #the way that she has devoted so many years of her life #to a guy that she could not possibly have known very long #there's some kind of spell that she's taken in by #a perception of hannibal made of more truth than will's first one was #but which is ultimately another story she's telling herself (/that was told to her)#there's got to be some kind of friction there if she does end up in close orbit with them post-fall #and of course will's fear of her is about how much he likes to tap at where she is brittle #magnified because of all the ways in which #what he wants to do to her is exactly what was done to him #there's several things in secondo specifically about will poking at her perception of hannibal actually #he seems invested in a destabilization(!) of that worldview #beyond “just” making her a murderer #chiyoh made the mistake of making hannibal a source of her stability #and boy does will know what that does to a person #anyway is all of this coming together i dunno #i think they should be terrible to/for/around each other about it #hannibal

the thing abt nbc hannibal is when you are pointing to moments of hannibal being kindly and affectionate to will in season one and being like 💕THATS LOVE its so so important to distinguish that in point of fact 100% of what was just shown is central to and emblematic of the psychiatric abuse plot and all the affection being shown has a clear proprietary edge a la this-is-my-favorite-lab-rat, he-does-every-trick-blindfolded-on-his-hands-and-knees. he's checking in on him not because he cares for his plight but because he is maintaining control. causing more problems and presenting reliance on himself as the clearest solution. he's doing abuse. and you have to be reading it on that level you can't just fall for the mask and insist upon its being the true face. he's unspooling will graham into strands and crocheting him into a little hat.
