What's kept you from ever giving up?
At the point where I decided to really see where life would take me if I followed photography giving up wasnāt really an option. Having already been fired from a job, being thousands of dollars in debt to creditors, months behind on my mortgage payment for my condo (which I nearly lost) I was ready to take a chance to see where I would end up. I could have easily ran out and got another job and filed for bankruptcy and just did the typical safe thing.Ā
But at this time I was just fed up. Fed up with working a job I lost interest in,fed up with stressing about owing money and fed up with not being sure of what to do.I then realized nothing in life is permanent⦠you make it what you want it to be. Sometimes things happen faster than others although usually they donāt. I think if you find something that makes you happy just doing it then that is a start.Ā
For me it was now or never. How much worse can things get? At the end of day regardless I have photography. Just taking pictures makes me happy. I knew I could do this rich or poor old or young. When you discover something like this in your life why would you want to give it up?
How do you think social media has affected today's photography? Do you think it has tainted the perception of what good photography is? Or do you think it has stimulated photographers need to go above and beyond to get a great shot?
Fun question. I think it has had a positive and negative effect on todays state of photography. I wouldnāt say tainted but it has had a impact⦠good or bad that is up for debate.Ā
Anytime you bring a social aspect into a art form the landscape changes. I can see why some people who have been photographing for years.. even decades would be upset at the current state of things. These are artists who were shooting long before instagram flickr tor tumblr. They shot because photography itself drew them in. Not the likes or the status one can achieve but the art form. So it makes me wonder⦠take away the instant satisfaction of sharing your images and how many people today would keep shooting?Ā
I feel while a lot of them are developing photographers they donāt have anyone pushing them. Pushing them to shoot for themselves. Instagram is a great crash course into photography. And it is only natural that they would want to emulate an image that gets a positive response they need to see there is more to it.
The problem with this is you have thousands of people all shooting photos that are almost exactly the same. From the photo itself to the processing. While this is great for practicing of a technique wether it be long exposures, depth of field, action shots or working with props something is missing. With no one to sayĀ āgreat use of that technique. Now I want to see YOU utilize it.ā Meaning o.k. I have seen you mimic someone elseās photos now I want to see you⦠show me a photo that speaks from you. I feel there are people who shoot this way but donāt share their work because it is not going to getĀ ālikesā and that shouldnāt be happening. You shouldnāt be afraid to share work that truly speaks to you.
In the end social media is here to stay. It has done a lot of good for photography but also some bad. It is just going to come down to the photographer and what they want to make of it. If they are content shooting the same stuff as everyone else forĀ ālikesā then that is their choice. The ones who will thrive are going to be the individuals who stop to and think about what they are shooting.. what they want their message to be⦠what they are actually making a photo of. Who use their imagination to challenge and push themselves beyond what they simply see on the popular page.Ā
