like textually shes obsessed with these weird battery-powered christmas reindeer doll thinigies and places them all over her house, she owns at least three katana (black one in the bedroom, the kitchen one, and one she keeps on her person that she used to slash the office diaper guy's briefcase), has a secondary obsession with heart-shaped objects (???), preserves her daughter's arts and crafts project (snowflakes) by bronzing it. shes also fucking batman apparently, the scary reindeer ninja woman who eradicated crime in hometown and makes the car-benchpressing undyne look like a chump. and she has ice powers in the light world or smth bc she drops the temperature of rooms with her sheer presence.

outside of the text, she is very clearly some kind of fucked up mom lalonde-bro strider amalgamate. like next chapter we're gonna go into the holiday home to find the shelter code and shes gonna stalk us around the house by flashstepping and moving around one of her reindeer dolls to fuck with us. we break into her room and find an unholy stash of spiked eggnog and her laptop. "maybe she wrote it down in here!" susie says. noelle tries to guess the password and gets it first try (its ifuckinglovechristmash0h0h0). the laptop opens and we find that she hasnt logged out of her soundcloud account where she anonymously posts her Epic Christmas Raps. open the file search and theres nothing else on the laptop its just her shitty fucking rap wips and 5 Family Photos. susie thinks her raps are awesome but doesnt want to admit it. this is my official ch 6 prediction.

Anyone ever think about how Rose has probably watched CSEM of Dave? I do. Rose's semi-ironic predation of him through the lens of making him her patient, a notebook full of observations of him that she may or may not actually have. It's more intimate than any way he might feel about the fact that random people on the internet have probably jerked off to videos with him in them, in which he may or may not have been fully clothed. I don't think either of them understand how wrong the situation with Bro is here, and I wish it's something that had come up more seriously between them later on.

This is more parallels with Rose and Terezi too. Terezi watches Dave and so does Rose, probably. Of course, all the patron trolls watched their designated humans at specific points in their childhoods, but when Terezi does that specific attention is put to how cute she thinks he is as a toddler, being fed by a puppet. Dave annoys Terezi by telling her how he's going to remove his glasses for Rose as his dream self, which Terezi won't be able to observe. They each have had a different kind of intimate view of him.

I think the most acknowledgment we get of Dave's Canonical Puppet-Based Sexual Trauma post-Act 3 is when he claims that Rose got off easier just having an alcoholic mom because at least her mom never "shoved a puppet in her face." I really wanted to see it boil over properly, maybe have them both come to an understanding of how they both minimized the pain each one was feeling at the time because they were busy repressing their own. I've seen people say sometimes that Dave would have been better off with Mom Lalonde, and that while Bro should never raise children, Rose could have handled him better, but I'm not sure about that. I think Dave would have become horribly codependent with his mom, and probably had a much worse time dealing with her death than Rose did. And it should go without saying that being raised by such an awful misogynist would have massively fucked Rose up, probably make her feel like she has something to prove to everyone she meets. Which she already sort of does. But like, worse. That should be another post though, or maybe a fic.

Anyway also:

Minutely turning a big dial that says "Rose's capacity to rape somebody" on it and constantly looking back at the audience for approval like a contestant on the price is right.

truly believe that self-censorship is the death of good horror. i mean i know i’m biased because i am trying to get a fucked up book published, but i feel like so many good ideas are stopped in their tracks because the writers are so afraid of being judged. i mean, hell, i went through the exact same thing writing my book. my dad had to continuously tell me to stop self-censoring and to write from the gut, because i was terrified that other people would hate me or be disgusted by me because of what i wanted to write. i didn’t want to pour myself into the book and then have people read it and realize that i was secretly a bad person. and like, look. i’m not going to pretend that everyone in my life is thrilled about this book, now that I’m talking about it openly. there are people that mean a lot to me who think that writing about incest and sexual assault and gratuitous violence is fucked up. and guess what? we’re still friends. i respect that they’re uncomfortable around those subjects and will probably never read it, they respect that i wrote it and still hope that i find success, and we talk about other shit! at the end of the day, it’s horror fiction. they know my character and trust that I won’t push it on them. and there have been far more people that have been very excited about the book, people that i wouldn’t have expected! self-censoring is almost shooting yourself in the foot— you’re not telling the story you want to tell, you’re telling a watered-down version of it. readers can always tell when someone is really excited to be writing what they’re writing, and when they’re walking on eggshells. get more fucked up! push it to extremes! that’s going to be so much more interesting for both you and your audience. don’t censor yourself before anyone else gets to see it, you’re just doing the critics’ job for them. they think it’s disgusting? oh, you’ll fucking show them disgusting.
