i just wanna put this out there so everyone who sees my blog knows how my mind forms Z-A thoughts

this whole sequence:

informs my beliefs about the Z-A's plot.

From the trailers, Z-A has two sides:

Wild Zones - Meant to encourage unity between humans and pokemon by letting them share Lumiose (limited resource/space)

Battle Zones - Discourages unity between trainers, as they all fight and claw their way to the top so they can have their wish granted

Battle Zones represent Lysandre's idea that humans are inherently selfish and will fight and steal from one another, while Wild Zones oppose this idea, showing that humans are willing to share, so they and pokemon can live in peace and harmony. (or, should i say "Paxton and Harmony"?)

At its core, I think Z-A is about proving Lysandre's pessimistic view of the world wrong, and that everyone in the future can live peacefully without fighting over resources. Any predictions I make about the plot of the game will be based on this.

I work with kids and I've had two occasions where a little boy straight up won't listen to anything I say because I'm a woman. and like yeah he's gonna continue to be raised by terrible role models and probably grow up to be a sexist douchebag but I have three hours a week to get through to him and so far I'm crushing it. I got six year old boys who previously didn't listen to a word I said telling their shitty dads to not speak to me like that. yeah that's right I'm the teacher making your kid woke. go fuck yourself about it.

honestly there's nothing that's going to work for every kid but I've found just turning kid behavior back on them usually works pretty well. like if they say something about "girls are like this and boys are like that" be like why. why. why. why. exactly the way little kids do. they'll try to come up with an answer but usually after like five rounds of me asking why they'll eventually be like huh. idk.

in my case it definitely helps that I teach kids martial arts classes at a boxing gym with a lot of women. so little boys just factually cannot tell me that girls can't fight or aren't strong or something, because they're constantly surrounded by proof that isn't true. also rules are very different in a boxing gym so if a kid is being a little shit I'm allowed to pick them up and put them in upside down air jail. you probably can't do this in most contexts.

I think the biggest thing is that they need to see men and other boys listening to women. they're following the example that's been set for that. at home maybe their dad never listens to their mom, but when they show up at my class all the other boys are following my instructions. peer pressure is real and you can use it to your advantage. I make a point to tell the biggest buffest manliest dudes what to do in front of the little boys. now this works because those dudes already listen to me, but getting any dudes to follow your instructions could probably work.

the best punishment is the natural consequences of your behavior. if a kid isn't going to listen to me, he doesn't get to do class. this works because class is fun and he wants to kick stuff and hit people with noodles. kids want to have fun more than they want to misbehave. as long as listening to me is more fun than misbehaving, they'll listen.

because these boys are learning this behavior from their dads, the dads also tend to be the kind of tough strict emotionally distant parents that would yell at "girly" behavior or crying. even when I'm strict with the kids, I never yell, I obviously never hurt them, and I always listen. they want to yap at me about pokemon or youtubers. it can be tough when they're really sexist at the beginning but eventually they will show you something that their dad wouldn't approve of, whether they want a pink noodle or quietly mention they like a girly show. this is the part where you simultaneously act like it's no big deal while encouraging it. you need show it's completely normal for a boy to want or like that. if you can, bring up another boy or man they know who likes the same thing. I always show off my nails to the kids and bring over the guy who also paints his nails. you'll probably get "boys can do that?" comments and I usually just go "well he's a boy and he did it, so unless his hand falls off right now I think it's okay"

for me, it's always eventually gotten to a point where the boys realize that everyone else thinks it's normal to listen to women, and that if they want to have fun they need to listen too. they also realize that these people and these women are nicer and listen to them more than their dad does. they notice how all these nice people that make them happy talk to women very differently than their dad does. when those boys yelled at their dads for being rude to me, I made a point to thank them and say that they were right and their dads were rude.

encouraging the behavior you want to see is even more important than punishing the behavior you don't want to see. you can't tell kids what not to do without giving them something to replace the behavior with.

Bad sex scenes are fun to make fun of but I think one of the easy reasons they are frequently awful is that there's no narrative energy to them. I picked up on this by studying combat scenes and I think the problems that show up are really similar; there's this thing writers do where they treat these kinds of sequences differently than the rest of their work, the scenes feel like they exist outside the regular narrative and writers just pause the story while they happen. People are always complaining about fighting and sex in stories being "boring and a waste of time" and that's not an inherent function of these mechanics, that means writers aren't approaching them with the same thoughtfulness as the narrative, and the audience can feel it.

The sex is an interaction, and interactions should illuminate things! It's still beholden to the plot/characterization/worldbuilding rule, we should always be communicating some kind of new information or reinforcing what is already understood. You are having 2+ personalities strip down and communicate with their bodies what are they SAYING. It doesn't have to be anything profound, even just communicating to the audience "i think this person doing this thing is hot" counts; wanting the reader to get off to something is a perfectly respectable goal that can keep us on track if you're aware of it. But the writer so frequently has NO IDEA what they're actually trying to say, what the goal of the scene is beyond fucking or fighting, so we end up with bland interfacing between characters who could be replaced by any other characters doing the same thing anywhere else. It isn't hot or interesting to be directionless, pick an intention and go.

Klavier continues to become more interesting to me. I really like that they deal with how his fame affects him (people bombarding him with stupid comments about him supposedly singing people to death) and that he gets genuinely pissed about that. That he's shown to be an utter perfectionist (likely because he's aware of the consequences for his reputation if he fucks up), and that he gets very protective of lamiroir at certain points because he really looks up to her

And he doesn't want her to have to deal with that same backlash.

And then when he mentions that the truth matters to him more than anything (though I'm sure it's also related to more of his backstory I have yet to uncover) and that he likes to keep relationships civil, it makes sense why. And it also makes sense why he can appreciate Apollo despite their differences, because he recognizes that that's what matters to Apollo too.

A lot of the time I've seen people's interpretation of Klavier (ESPECIALLY regarding Apollo) they totally left out just how much this guy actually cannot stand Apollo in the beginning.

Like he's SUCH a condescending dick to you (especially in court itself) and it caught me completely off guard playing the games myself for the first time.

He hides it between backhanded compliments and charismatic smiles but he has the same vibe to me as AA1 Edgeworth has where he just. Sucks the absolute worst and loves belittling you for no reason, even if Klavier is somewhat more mild and fair about it in my eyes (because dear god fuck pre-redemption arc Edgeworth no offense I love him <3)

And you can tell it's because he's stressed. Klavier tries to appear very laid back but he's SO not. He gets pissy very easily because everything matters a lot to him even if he tries to act nonchalant about it.

And he does slowly warm up to Apollo over time (which is truly the best part to me) so now I'm sat here wondering why so much of klapollo content is just Klavier being openly smitten with Apollo and is not. Capitalizing on the very clear rivals to lovers "I can't believe I like THAT fucking guy" on both sides.

Like Klavier would not be very willingly in love with Apollo, he would throw a fit about it— and it would be hilarious and I would love to see it.

I don't think he's the the type to be genuinely flirty when he likes someone (the flirting is mostly a tool to keep up his image for him) I feel like he's the type to become way more annoying with his bullying of Apollo instead.

Because that way he can both kind of distance himself from his feelings and also get Apollo's attention at the same time. Like the real bitchiness gradually becomes secretly affectionate bitchiness you see my vision

I don't know how to explain it but I feel like a lot of Klavier's mannerisms are based on making himself appear desirable and important and you know. A rockstar. It's why he acts so arrogant (even though he's fully aware of all the mistakes he can possibly make) And so I feel like he wouldn't go for direct flirting (because that's not an amount of vulnerable he's genuinely ready to be).

So instead I think he would basically just dial it up to eleven with the "I'm so out of your league" basically unsubtly inviting Apollo to prove him wrong. Which you can play two ways:

1. This does in fact work on Apollo and proving himself hijinks ensue so now they're suddenly on a date

OR what I think is the infinitely funnier and also more interesting option:

2. This DOESN'T work on Apollo and Klavier starts grasping at straws and is gradually forced to admit that he actually really likes this guy the more desperate he feels himself become, and is subsequently forced to be genuine for once– which is what does end up working on Apollo, since truth and sincerity is what the guy is all about.

Anyway I've been talking for too long. Yeah

ohhhh my gosh yeah Klavier is one of my favorite guys to talk about ever so I have to add back on.

I think one of the most important keys for understanding Klavier is to look at Kristoph. they are older and younger brother by an 8-year margin, yet they wear their hair exactly the same. even if it's not explicitly shown to such a degree on screen (in large part I would say due to their limited interactions), I believe they are deeply intertwined with each other, and in fact you can see similarities between them in how they behave.

Klavier and Kristoph both have Reputations that demand careful management of them. Kristoph is 'The Coolest Defense in the West' and feels the need to maintain an atmosphere of cool composure and competence. Klavier is 'The Rockstar Prosecutor' and feels the need to keep things 'cool and loose,' rarely truly allowing himself to sweat things out even when his nerves are frayed.

Klavier and Kristoph are both intelligent, cunning people who like to toy with the people around them. Kristoph is... well, I don't think I even need to go into it, really. Klavier sits back with a smile on his face and lets people make fools of themselves, teasing and taunting them the whole way through. I know it's quite overplayed at this point for AA to call its lawyers 'geniuses' and 'prodigies' etc., but to me, Klavier really acts the part of someone who is used to being 'smarter' than the people around him: he loafs and amuses himself by watching others because his brain worked faster than theirs did. That's how I see it, anyhow.

Klavier and Kristoph both hold their true emotions and motivations very, very close to the chest. Kristoph would rather say "I killed Shadi Smith with a bottle because I am an evil human being" than give the slightest hint anything deeper or more human might have motivated him; sympathy could not matter less to him. Klavier, again, is all smiles and roses and flirts shamelessly with someone he hates. He also has very little to say in response to being deeply betrayed by the two strongest bonds we know him to have. I honestly think most of his mannerisms are in place to avoid him getting hurt. To avoid anyone getting too close to him too easily. His behaviors seem quite guarded and bordering on the paranoid to my eyes.

Klavier and Kristoph both seem to only be able to be rattled by losing control. Being in control of a situation, having things proceed as expected, soothing their own perfectionistic expectations — this is what is required for them to avoid freaking out. Kristoph lost control when a variable he thought he could write off reappeared in the picture. Klavier lost control at a few different points, but most tellingly to me is when his performance went badly awry and he'd lost his keys. now, of course, it's very understandable to freak out when your guitar bursts into flames onstage... but looking at the rest of the picture, Klavier doesn't always act in understandable ways. of all the things that happen, this is what he shows the most emotion about, and why I think his control issues are deeply tied to a sense of paranoia. the other instances of him losing control? well, sadly, those are likely examples of paranoid fears he already had being confirmed. so in a way that's 'easier to bear' on the face of it.

okay, so where am I going with all of this? Klavier is a lot like Kristoph in a lot of ways. where he strongly differs is in the sense of what drives him, what he holds deeply important at the core, his truest disposition. what Kristoph comes to care about most of all is winning. as Klavier himself points out, this is not his own top priority. what he cares most about is truth. yet, of course, despite valuing that so much, sincerity does not seem to come easily to him. what gives?

I think you have to understand a lot of the way he behaves by understanding that he is Kristoph's brother. Not just in the sense of, they are similar because they are related, but in the sense of, who is the likeliest to have been the earliest target for Kristoph's manipulation and control and sinister behavior? Klavier, of course. you start to wonder if all of these dodgy behaviors are maybe manifestations of the adaptations Klavier has had to make to protect himself from his brother. I certainly wondered that, at any rate, and I became more convinced of it the more I pored over everything again and again.

yet, Klavier loves his brother. Klavier trusts his brother. Klavier hates Apollo to begin with because he knows he is responsible for his brother's arrest, and he believes that APOLLO MUST HAVE CHEATED TO ENGINEER THIS OUTCOME. he hates Apollo because he has become the disciple of Phoenix Wright, the 'Forgin' Attorney,' and not only that, he went from being his brother's employee to being his accuser. this looks very bad for Apollo! this looks suspicious as all hell! of course he hates Apollo!

and over the course of the game, Apollo grudgingly gains his respect. he proves that he can win cases fairly, that he is intelligent and skilled, that he has a sense of integrity — even that he is cooperative to the point Klavier straight up wonders aloud "are you just naïve?" !!!!!! this relationship is DEEPLY FASCINATING and merits careful attention!

so the upshot of all this is that I think more attention needs to be given to exactly how pivotal of a role Kristoph played in Klavier's life and just how the aftermath of the game would affect him. just because the pretty boy plays it all cool during that last trial doesn't mean he's holding it together inside. and when he inevitably starts to break the fuck down under the weight of all that's revealed, what will Apollo do? because there's serious room for a gap to be bridged there when two people that Kristoph used and manipulated have to reckon with the promise of his utter absence, and the connection they cannot help but share as a result of shared proximity to someone so monstrous.

and THAT could exhibit a really fascinating push and pull. I do think Apollo would care about how Klavier's doing afterwards because he notices and empathizes with his visible pain mid-trial, musing in his thoughts about the "darkness" that's tormenting him. and I think Klavier would probably rather peel his own skin off than fully lay his emotions bare to Apollo at a time like that. honestly, my favorite light to see any dynamics involving Klavier in is that provoking him into an argument is the best way to get his honest truth out of him. let him lead the conversation, and he'll just flirt and embarrass and divert you away from the topic of interest like it's his job. but if you can fully get under his skin and put him on the back foot and get an argument to happen, well, I think very fascinating and delicious things can start to follow from that.

so uh, yeah. admittedly, the whole Klapollo dynamic thing is not usually my wheelhouse, but that's (a selection of) the thoughts I have to offer on Klavier and how his unique set of traits would impact the progression of his connection to Apollo. may this provide even further food for thought

My name is Chatot. As you know, I’m the head of intelligence, and the Guildmaster’s oldest pupil. Just recently, Team PokéPals was asked by the Guildmaster to investigate Waterfall Cave. However!

After Team PokéPals completed the job and returned, the Guildmaster realized that it was a place we had already been to. In that case, there was no need to go there and investigate... really, that is so like him… (sweats)

However. This is the Guildmaster. And so, there must be some reason. He may simply have forgotten about it (sweats). Hmm. I don’t know. After all, he is like a fairy.

As the head of intelligence, thinking about it kept me up at night, and so I decided to take the plunge and visit the Guildmaster’s room. Of course, I did not forget the Perfect Apple.

"Guildmaster, sir, I have brought the Perfect Apple. I’m coming inside."

"Yes! The Perfect Apple!! Thank you, Chatot."

And so the Guildmaster looked at the bright red Perfect Apple, and with a wonderful smile, spoke slowly to me in this way.

"…I think it was around the time that I evolved into Wigglytuff, and decided in my heart to strive to become a Guildmaster. By coincidence, I happened to hear a rumor that someone saw my old master. I have talked about my master before, haven’t I? I could not stay still, and went to all of the rumored places, and gathered information from the explorers. But. In the end, I wasn’t able to meet my master."

"Some time after that, I heard a story about my master being seen in Waterfall Cave. And so I headed there immediately. As I was still quite inexperienced then, there were several trials waiting for me."

Those memories are a precious treasure to me, because memories of friends can be an unexpected power. Difficult adventures and tough trials can surely be overcome if you are with friends. Those memories will shine within your heart, and become a treasure."

"Still, I did not expect them to uncover the secret of the Hot Spring so easily. But that’s Team PokéPals for you. I hope the day comes when those two realize that they’ve discovered a great treasure. An extraordinary treasure that cannot be seen with your eyes."

After leaving the Guildmaster’s room, I spent a long time looking at the round moon. And this is what I was thinking about.

Even if you return from an adventure, and the treasure chest you brought back with you is empty, it might actually be filled with the treasures called memories…

The round moon was like a ring of everyone’s smiles, and I felt as if I could hear the Guildmaster’s voice. Saying, "memories, memories, YOOM...TAH!"
