[Amy Dentata tweeted: “If you really hate ‘self-diagnosing’ maybe you should support universal healthcare. Just an idea. Also, like, the only reason I got my #EDS diagnosis is because I did my own research. Docs didn’t suggest the diagnosis, I did. And it fit. We live in a world where, sometimes, people have to House MD themselves. That’s just how it is. Deal. My episode of House MD lasted 17 years, but goddamn it, I solved the mystery. If I’d just let doctors do their own thing, it wouldn’t be so. But universal healthcare would make it a LOT easier. My healthcare has often been substandard b/c we have a two-tier system. Would I have found the diagnosis sooner were I not funneled into ‘poor people insurance’? Yes. I would have at LEAST had treatment for my allergies, which are incapacitating and year-round without some kind of symptom management. Instead, I have to try and finagle insurance coverage for allergy treatment. Why? Cuz the poors don’t get that level of care. So if MCAS (a common EDS co-morbidity) can’t get me coverage for allergy treatments, I’m basically screwed on that front. Because poor. If I’d had this crap covered from the start, I wouldn’t *be* poor right now. But the US loves to *create* poverty and then blame the poor. Just as we put people in situations where they have no choice but to self-diagnose, and then blame them. It’s nonsense.”]
