▼ SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES
Meredith Harding was born and raised in Niagara Falls, New York, along with her parents and younger twin sister Madison Harding. While her father is human, her mother has the werewolf gene and passed it on to both her daughters, which was something that Meredith never knew about. Her mother had always managed to remain untriggered, just like her twin sister who had found out about the werewolf gene by accident. They never saw any reason to worry Meredith when it wasn’t necessary to do so, so they kept their werewolf gene a secret from the young girl. People don’t usually notice Meredith right away though, because she’s a quiet girl who keeps to herself most of the time, someone who’s been interested in medicine ever since she was ten years old. She prefers staying home instead of going out to parties with friends and during high school and college, Meredith was very studious. She enjoyed living a quiet life and never felt the compulsive need to be in the spotlight - the background always worked fine for her, just like her twin sister. Though she did always feel like she was different, she just never figured out why that was. Why did she have aggression issues more than her friends and classmates did? Why was she different than them? Was there something wrong with her? These were all things that the young girl intended to ask her mom, but the woman died when Meredith was eighteen years old, the day of her high school graduation. Not having her mother there was about the hardest thing she ever had to do, but at least she had her father there as well as her twin sister. This just meant that she could never ask her mother about what it means to be a werewolf and she could never tell the woman how much she loved her. There were so many things that she still wanted to say to her mother, but it was too late and there was no chance for her to say them anymore. For years, Meredith beat herself up over it and never forgave herself for her mom’s death. If it hadn’t been for her graduation ceremony, the woman would still be alive, so naturally, Meredith blamed herself. Meredith’s mother had been running late to her daughters’ graduation ceremony and she had spoken to Meredith right before getting into her car. She was angry at the woman for running late since she didn’t want her mom to miss anything - it had been an important event to her and Madison after all and both girls needed their parents there. Because Meredith was upset, her mother ran a couple of red lights in hopes of making it to her daughters’ graduation quicker. However, a truck soon came out of nowhere and hit the female’s car, right as she ran the third, red light. Meredith never forgot that day and she still hasn’t forgiven herself for being angry at her mother. She still feels like it was her fault, because if she had been more patient, then her mom wouldn’t have run those red lights and she’d still be alive. She hadn’t meant to get angry, she just wanted her mother there on one of the most important days of her life and she wasn’t there when she was supposed to be. Meredith never told anyone about her feelings regarding that day and what she had done, she just kept it to herself because she already felt bad enough about it. She never told her father and twin sister about the conversation between herself and her mother, so they have no idea that Meredith had been upset that day.
They also don’t know that the woman had been running several red lights because she felt bad about being late and about upsetting her daughter. Meredith’s life didn’t get better after she headed off to college either, mostly because she’d stopped liking herself and thought that no one else would like her either. She changed and became more closed off, not letting many people come close to her and going through life without friends. She stopped being close to her father as well as Madison, who didn’t understand what they had done wrong or why Meredith had changed so much. Meredith studied medicine during college and started working at the local hospital after she graduated at age twenty two. However, she didn’t attend her graduation ceremony there - it held too many memories and she didn’t want to be reminded of her mother’s passing. After she had been working at the hospital for almost two years, Meredith met a cute doctor who seemed to be interested in her. Since she was still untriggered though, she wasn’t able to sense what he was - a vampire. He pretended to be a good vampire, just to get close to Meredith and gain her trust. In truth, he’d seen how sad the young girl had been and he decided that she was the perfect prey. After taking her out a couple of times and wooing Meredith, the vampire wanted to take it a step further. Obviously, he was a bad vampire who relished in other people’s pain, so during the night shift with Meredith, he compelled her to kill a patient so she’d trigger her curse. Unfortunately, Meredith had no choice when his compulsion kicked in and grabbed a knife from the hospital kitchen, taking the life of a female patient that night. Afterwards, she felt entirely guilt ridden and didn’t know how to deal with what she’d done, she just knew that she no longer trusted vampires and was afraid of them. Her mother hadn’t been able to tell her about werewolves before she died, so Meredith had never known what it meant. She had no idea that a death had to be caused by her hand in order for her curse to trigger. Meredith knew that she had to turn every full moon after running off to the local library to do her research. How could she have forgotten about the werewolf curse after her mother died? Why hadn’t she been more cautious? Why hadn’t she done her research at eighteen? All questions that she had no answers to - she just knew that she had to run away before her father and twin would find out about what she’d done. Meredith felt too ashamed to let her family see her and she was even afraid of herself. She’d turn into a monster every month now, so what was she supposed to do? Were her cousins in Ocean Cove just like her too? Did they know about the werewolf gene and how it worked? Meredith knew one thing - she needed answers and she needed them now. Without telling her dad and sister, she ran off to Ocean Cove, hoping that her cousins would be able to help her since she didn’t know what else to do. She could barely even look at herself anymore, but Meredith needed to learn how to be a werewolf without hurting people. She needed to learn about her own species, how they worked and what her life would be like now that she’d have to live as a transformed werewolf once a month. Now that she’s in town, she wants to stay, asking to be transferred to the local hospital in Ocean Cove.
Meredith and Madison used to be close, until Meredith began to close herself off to everyone, including her own twin sister. Madison never understood why Meredith changed, but she never managed to get her sister to open up to her. She has no idea about Meredith having killed one of her patients because she was compelled, or that her curse is now triggered. She just woke up one morning and her twin was gone. Naturally, Madison and her dad went looking for Meredith, finding her in Ocean Cove.
Meredith has always been closer to Piper than she’s been to Peyton, feeling like Piper understands her better. After she arrives in town, Meredith asks her cousin about the werewolf gene and begs for Piper’s help. Unfortunately, Piper herself is still untriggered, meaning that she’s unable to help her cousin the way she’d like to. Of course, Piper won’t just let Meredith leave. Even though she’s untriggered, she still wants to be there for the girl and introduce her to her newborn son.
Peyton and Meredith have never been close, mainly because the two are complete opposites. Peyton’s not sure why Meredith has come to town, because the girl won’t really talk to her the way that she’s been talking to Piper and Nathaniel. Peyton’s pretty much decided that Meredith’s problem isn’t hers. If she won’t come to her with her issues, there’s nothing Peyton can do for her cousin.
Unlike his sisters, Nathaniel has triggered his curse and has even turned into a hybrid. He’ll be able to help Meredith, but she’ll have to let him in if she wants him to assist her. She’s afraid though, only having opened up to Piper so far. Nathaniel knows she’s triggered her curse because he instantly noticed that something was different about the girl. Together with Piper, he promised Meredith to help her get through whatever she’s going through. Like his older sibling, he wants his cousin to stay and thinks it’s nice to have more family around.
On the night that Meredith came to town, Julian got shot right in front of her. Of course, with her being a nurse, she rushed over and helped him right away. He never forgot how kind and helpful she was when she put her nursing skills to good use. For some weird reason, Meredith feels like she can trust Julian and she feels very comfortable around him. He might just end up being the one she confides in and tells everything to. Both are triggered werewolves, so maybe Julian can help her when it comes to controlling her werewolf abilities, teaching her everything about the species.
If someone knows all about feeling lonely and isolated, it’s Vincent. The young warlock instantly notices that Meredith acts and feels the same way that he does, so he knows she must have been through a lot in her life. Because of this, he instantly feels drawn to Meredith, feeling like maybe he’s found someone to confide in, someone who might understand. Meredith’s not sure if she can trust Vincent. Not only is he younger than her, she also doesn’t know him and she’s also seen his womanizing ways, leaving her skeptical about him.
It’s Trini’s job to hunt creatures like Meredith and that’s exactly what she does after the werewolf comes to town. She’s an experiences huntress, but she also knows that supernaturals shouldn’t be underestimated. Meredith manages to escape, but in the process, there was a casualty. When Trini shot an arrow towards Meredith, she was successful in avoiding it, but an innocent human happened to pass by, getting hurt in the process. Before Meredith could rush to the injured human, Trini had already done so and took them to the hospital. Meredith feels bad about it, as does Trini, but both girls also know that this war isn’t over between them.
