Cock of the Walk - best fried catfish in Mississippi (except for my cousin Joel's)
Let me precede this post by telling everyone that I follow that I enjoy 65% of the posts I see. I laugh, I smile, I get weirded out, but sometimes I get pissed off. So I love you, but I can't stand that side of you. Here's why:
I'm not a Tumblr poster, I'm a Tumblr follower. I have 37 followers and the only thing that ends up on my page are my instagrams. But I need to say something.
All of you little shits in middle school and high school need to realize some things.
1. Your "relationship" is inconsequential in the grand scheme of your life. Yes, it's important to begin exploring relationships and heart break, but dear God if I see one more post about some girl self-depricating herself because the boy she never even talked to started going out with someone else I'm going to find a a kitten and punch it in the face. Don't do that to the kittens, they don't deserve it.
2. Tumblr has this overarching culture that having no friends and sitting on Tumblr all day scrolling through ridiculous posts is a positive characteristic. You all post meme after gif about having no friends and being depressed about it in this "I'm joking but I really am upset about it I'm just going to play it off like a joke because a lot of notes might make feel better for a split second" tone and I'm SICK OF IT. You're tired of having no friends? GET OFF YOUR ASS, AWAY FROM YOUR COMPUTER SCREEN, GO INTO THE SUNLIGHT AND SAY HELLO TO SOMEONE WHO LOOKS LIKE A PERSON YOU MIGHT WANT TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH. Contrary to popular Tumblr belief, the worst someone will do is probably smile and walk away because they're not in the mood to socialize. Sure, if you walk up to someone who clearly is 100% different than you are, you might get a negative result. But that's your fault for trying to interact with someone you probably wouldn't even like anyways. It's not about being socially savvy, it's about having a brain.
2.1 It has also become quite apparent in the Tumblr culture that you all have bonded over some false sense of camaraderie in being shy and "socially awkward". A majority of the Tumblrs I follow are run by middle or high schoolers. Again, listen up you little shits! EVERYONE IN YOUR PEER GROUP (which, for the record, includes people you're not friends with - it's the people you interact with ((directly or indirectly)) everyday) IS SOCIALLY AWKWARD RIGHT NOW. Nobody knows who they are at 13, nobody knows who they are 16; hell I'm 22 and a college graduate and I'm only now starting to figure it out. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Yeah, there are some people out there who may or may not deserve to be punched in the face by every single one of the Avengers every morning, but there are also a lot of people out there, sitting on Tumblr, being sad about not having very many friends, who are EXACTLY LIKE YOU AND WOULD LOVE TO BE YOUR FRIEND. Stop feeling sorry for yourself because you're too lazy to put effort into making your life more enjoyable when there are children in America who don't know where there next meal is going to come from or there are kids your age working 3 part-time jobs just so they might be able to save enough money to go to a community college. Just stop.
3. Dear Tumblrs that I follow, you all are a huge sack of hypocritical hippos. You preach and preach about self confidence and self acceptance and tolerance and loving who you are and not judging the people around you but ARE YOU KIDDING ME WITH THE POSTS ABOUT YOURSELF? I see 18 posts about how strong some random girl was for overcoming her eating disorder then I see 19 posts about how you're laughing at the fact you've been sitting at your computer for 6 hours because you have no one to hang out with or how you want to crawl in a hole and die because the cute boy next to you saw you sneeze or how you're never going to leave your room because you've convinced yourself you're socially awkward. Then it's all followed up by the god-awful pictures of some faceless girl in a messy bun holding starbucks standing in her half-messy room with some white scrolly text over it that says "to feel good about myself #girlthings" Good God these things make me want to repeat history and have the Great Flood wash all of you away. I mean honestly. What the hell is that. PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH, LITTLE HIPPOS.
In Conclusion:
Life takes more effort than pushing a button to scroll down your Tumblr feed.
Not happy with something? Change it. Think that girl in the god-awful picture that you think is the epitome of cute (even though it makes the rest of the population that contributes to society want to puke) woke up looking like that? NO. She probably spent countless hours on pinterest and even more hours trying and failing to get her hair into that bun and it probably has 18 bobby pins in it just to get every stray hair to stay and for all you know that Starbucks was the last of her part-time pay check and she spent 37 minutes meticulously placing every article of clothing and mess you see behind in her in her perfectly "messy but I've still got my life together" room. She put effort into making that picture. The only effort you're putting forth into changing your attitude and your life is clicking a button to reblog a picture someone else made... see what I'm getting at here?
Nothing ever happens to anyone who sits on their ass and waits for something to happen to them. Honestly. If you're tired of being socially awkward, go to a cafe or a yoga class or a skate park or your freaking lunch room and talk to someone. Mark Zuckerburg QUIT COLLEGE because he had an idea he was willing to work for. Even the people who win 456 million dollars in the lottery are the people who buy lottery tickets every single day. You never hear a story about a woman who's like "yeah this is the first lottery ticket I ever bought and I wasn't ever going to buy one again." Nothing happens to these people you see with lives you envy. Those people happened to their lives - they created the life they have - it didn't fall into their lap. It's not going to fall into yours. You are not the exception.
YOUR LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT. STOP COMPLAINING AND START CHANGING. If you're not willing to make the effort, you deserve to spend your time alone in a dark room in front of a computer screen because the only thing you'd be doing outside of that room is bringing people who are trying to change down. Stay away.
The end.
Summerfest 2013!
“So my amazing daughter, Emma, turned 5 last month, and I had been searching everywhere for new-creative inspiration for her 5yr pictures. I noticed quite a pattern of so many young girls dressing up as beautiful Disney Princesses, no matter where I looked 95% of the “ideas” were the “How to’s” of how to dress your little girl like a Disney Princess…We chose 5 women (five amazing and strong women), as it was her 5th birthday but there are thousands of unbelievable women (and girls) who have beat the odds and fought (and still fight) for their equal rights all over the world” - Jaime Moore, Not Just a Girl
This is awesome!
Urban Farming in Columbia: Oxymoron or Revolution?
The outside of Hope Plaza, the building that hosts Christ Central Ministries headquarters’, boasts an ambiance of tranquility and calmness, but once you get through the hallways to home of Jah Roots Food, an entirely different environment unfolds. Once you step inside, you’re transported to a garden wonderland full of lush green herbs, colorful produce, and the sound of babbling water as it runs through it all. Jah Roots Food is an urban hyrdroponic garden that provides sustainably grown herbs and vegetables right here in Columbia, SC.
The inspiration for the business came from its owner and CEO, Scott Harriford. After researching and successfully building a hydroponics garden for his senior class project in high school, Harriford managed to turn his passion for growing sustainable, healthy food into a thriving business. Despite already owning a successful business, Harriford graduated from high school only 2 years ago. That’s right; this successful and innovative business owner is just sophomore at the University of South Carolina. With help from his father and USC’s Business Incubator program, Harriford is providing vendors of the midlands with healthy, local food.
Harriford runs his fingers over a giant basil leaf growing in a shallow plastic bin placed above a large fish tank. “I’ve been really lucky to have the resources I do,” he says, “Jah Roots Food would never be where it is without the help of my dad and the support from the Incubator.” The USC Business Incubator is a non-profit corporation sponsored by USC, the City of Columbia and area governments, and materially supported by businesses and private donors. Since its inception in November 1998, the Incubator has provided opportunities for entrepreneurs like Harriford to commercialize their ideas, produced successful, financially viable and freestanding businesses, and created hundreds of additional jobs in the community.
The Incubator helps Jah Roots Food run the business side of the company; they provide things like Internet and phone, business and marketing consultants, and office space. Harriford’s dad is also a large part of Jah Roots Foods. “I help Scott with a little bit of everything. Mostly the managerial parts of running a business, but also in some of the labor that goes into actually growing everything,” he says, “but none of this would be possible without Scott’s passion for aquaponics and sustainable food.”
Aquaponics sounds like a complex system, but Harriford explains it like he’s been doing it his whole life. Simply put, it’s a synergistic growing technique in which fish and plants are grown together in the same systems. The fish waste feeds the growing plants using organic hydroponic techniques. The plants, in turn, clean and filter the water that returns to the fish environment. Suddenly the fish tanks underneath the bins full of food made much more sense. “It’s more than just a really cool way to grow food, though,” Harriford elaborates, “not only is the Slow Food movement important to educate people about local and sustainable farming, but it’s got a really strong following here in Columbia.”
Jah Roots Food provides ingredients to many local restaurants. Some of their most recent partners include Chef Fluvio of Ristorante Divino and Chef George of IL Giorgione. All of their restaurant partners boast sustainable food practices. In addition, Jah Roots Food also sells their ingredients commercially. “That was one of the executive decisions I didn’t hesitate to make. Working with chefs and grocery stores is the ultimate goal, but I want everything we grow here to be available to the general public as well,” Harriford explains. “Something that is good for you and your community shouldn’t be withheld from anyone.”
The urban farm grows a variety of herbs and produce, from cabbage to spinach and basil to garlic. Since the products are grown indoors through a sustainable process, their ingredients are always fresh and always in season. Another big plus is the food from Jah Roots has no genetic modification, no herbicides or pesticides, and is sold at competitive prices. “This project means so many things to me,” Harriford looks around at his farm, an earnest tone taking over. “It’s important to me as an entrepreneur to keep my business running successfully, it’s important to me as a native Columbian to provide the best possible product to my community, and it’s important to me as an individual because I’ve put my blood, sweat, and tears into it.”
Jah Roots Food is a farm in the middle of a capital city, it’s run by a college student who hasn’t even reached the upper division of his classes, and it’s a company that’s doing good for its community. Defying conventional wisdom is what Jah Roots Food is all about, one head of cabbage at a time.
