Strawberry Shortcake || Molly & Tilden || April 4th

Mollywas famously kind-hearted and it wasn’t surprising at all to Tildento see her smile at his words, offering a thoughtful encouragement.“It’s a good way of thinking of it,” he replied, scratching hischin. Potions and baking were both about following instructions toturn separate ingredients into a single cohesive creation. If hecould do one, why shouldn’t he be able to do the other? He ought toat least try, right?

Ofcourse, just because it made sense in theory didn’t mean lifeworked out like that. But he might as well give the whole bakingthing another shot. It would be useful to know a couple recipes atleast. You never knew when it might come in handy. Really he ought tobe working on improving all of his culinary skills. It wasn’treally fair of him to keep depending on his mum sending homemademeals to him a couple times a month, nor was it particularly healthyto live off of tea and whatever quick and easy dishes he put togetherfor himself most days.

“I’lltry to remember to have a look around for the recipes next time I’mvisiting my parents,” he told Molly cheerfully. It was entirelypossible – and probably rather likely – that he would forget, buthe’d really try not to. He didn’t visit his mum and dad too oftenthese days. It was something he felt guilty about, too caught up inhis own worries and work and the war to find the time. Maybe thiswould give him another excuse to visit them.

Ishouldn’t need an excuse to see my mum and dad. Life’s just been…complicated.

Hewas pulled from his thoughts by Molly’s voice, which had gained atone of mild concern as she took note of the time. Following suit,Tilden glanced towards the clock displayed on one wall of the cafe.It was indeed getting later in the day. He hadn’t realized how longthey’d been chatting over the shared strawberry shortcake. “Ah,sorry!” he apologized, though he could tell from Molly’s tonethat she wasn’t resentful of the conversation. Which was good,because he’d enjoyed it a lot. Molly Weasley was probably a decadeolder than him at most, but she had such a maternal air to her thather presence seemed eternally comforting. He was glad to have bumpedinto her that afternoon. But she was right; she had a family at homewho might be worrying about the whereabouts of her and the twins.

“Oh!You don’t have to–” he said, surprised when she placed thepayment for the cake down on the table. Really he ought not have beenat all caught off-guard, he told himself. She was very kind, afterall. Paying for both of them was exactly the sort of thing she woulddo. He felt a bit guilty, but there was such certainty in her tonethat he didn’t want to argue. “Thanks very much!” he saidinstead, grinning over at her. “The next one will be on me.”

Itwas time for him to be heading out, too, he supposed. He offered thetwins another goofy face as he got to his feet. “This has beenreally nice, talking to you. And seeing these lads, of course! Thanksfor everything!” The cake had been wonderful, but it was theconversation and friendly face he appreciated the most. He paused fora moment, rolling his shoulders as he stretched his back. Time tohead home.

“I’llsee you three later,” he said, waving at the red-headed trio. “Sendme an owl if you need any help at all with the de-gnoming!”Offering Molly a final wide smile, he turned and headed for the door,feeling more cheerful than he had in a while.

Molly Weasley (née Prewett) (b. 30 October, 1949) was a pure-blood witch and the matriarch of the Weasley family, married to Arthur Weasley. She was born into the Prewett family, sister to Fabian and Gideon Prewett, members of the original Order of the Phoenix. They were both killed by Death Eaters in the First Wizarding War. Molly and Arthur had seven children; Bill, Charlie, Percy, twins Fred and George, Ron and Ginny. Molly was a member of the revived Order of the Phoenix following the return of Lord Voldemort and participated in the final battle of the Second Wizarding War, known for the downfall of Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange. Everything was chaos. Benjy didn’t know which way to turn or who to help when so many were so gravely injured. There weren’t enough hands, there weren’t enough beds or potions or salves or bandages. They were short on everything, and everyone was crying out for help. It was a nightmare. Even he was injured, but not badly enough that he could spare to waste the energy healing himself. A sprained (maybe broken) wrist and a few cuts and bruises wasn’t worth mentioning. He’d been lucky.

The moment they’d escaped, Benjy and his mother got to work. They were later than they’d have liked to be, but there was little for it. She sent him to work and he went, trying to think only those he could still help rather than those he hadn’t been able to save.

At least he was used to the absolute lack of sleep. He knew many of the others who’d been terrorized in the hospital all day and night were wearing down, but he could keep going. 

By the time it was midday, Benjy was covered in blood, most of which was not his own. He didn’t even have time to wipe it clean before he had to move on to someone else. It was horrifying, but disgusted as he was by the behavior of those responsible, he couldn’t stop.

He turned from the bed of a woman he’d just healed and nearly ran in to a man who looked like he could barely stand. Whoever he was stumbled back, and Benjy caught him, keeping him upright but barely. “Whoa now, hold on. It’s ok. Let’s find you a bed.”

He turned and looked everywhere, but everything was full and he didn’t have the strength to summon something or conjure something. They’d just have to walk across the room. It was stumbling and awkward, and his damage wrist screamed in protest, but there was nothing for it til he could set the man down.

He caught sight of a familiar looking red-head bolting across the room not far in front of him, and glanced over to see Molly Weasley cleaning herself up. If he’d had the hands, he’d have gone to steady her. She seemed well enough, though he wasn’t entirely sure she wouldn’t faint after speaking. “Are you alright? Just point me in the right direction. I can hold him a little longer.”

At the other wizard’s question, Molly found herself strangely amused, the irony of the moment far too much. He was covered in sticky blood and looked too exhausted for words. If he were her son, she would break down just at the sight of him.

“Merlin’s beard Benjy Fenwick, I won’t have you worrying after me, too.” She quipped with a sharp tongue, although the soft edges of face betrayed her. 

“Let’s sort out this gentlemen and find him a nice bed. Then we'll get you fixed up.” The way that Molly spoke left little room for argument.

Turning to glance over her shoulder, she swallowed back the sickness in her throat, trying to find a place that was clean. In the corner of the room, a place lay empty, and the witch nodded with a puff of her cheeks before reaching her arm out to help support the man beside Benjy.

“That one over there will do.” She returned, wrapping a freckled hand around a bloody waist and doing her best not to breath in the stench, fearing her knees would start to shake again. The witch didn’t ordinarily have such a weak stomach, but today was looking to be an unlucky day.

With the two of them holding the other man up, they managed to bring him across the room at last, and it was only as they were beside the bed did Molly let go of his waist, reaching for her wand with practiced hands. Muttering a quiet incantation, a fresh set of sheets began to wrap themselves around the thin fabric of the mattress, a pillow appearing at the top of the bed with a gentle pop.

In the distance, a not-so-gentle pop of bone cut through the air.

Molly squeezed her eyes shut and let out a breath before turning back to the pair. One thing at a time. 

“Alright, easy now.” She murmured as they helped him to the bed, her words softer now. “You’ll be alright.”

If you need someone to watch your other children while you look for Zane, I hope you know that they always have a place at the Burrow. I know that it’s not much, but there’s another owl coming with a casserole for your family as well so Rommie doesn’t need to cook.

Itwas hardly surprising that Molly leaned in preference towards astandard de-gnoming approach over the more violent methods of pestcontrol. She had little kids, after all. And besides that, Mollystruck him as much too kind to wish violence on any creature that wasultimately innocent. Gnomes were bothersome and a little on thedestructive side, but they weren’t malicious. They were justanimals that were doing what was in their nature to do.

“I’msure it won’t be hard to convince people to help,” he said,chuckling at her suggestion. “Just tell the Gryffindors in the lotthat it’s a contest to see who can get rid of the most gnomes andyou’ll be free of them before you know it!” He took another biteof cake, enjoying the mental image of the more competitive Ordermembers filling the air with dizzy gnomes. It wasn’t really fair topick on a single house like that, but he meant no harm by it. AndGryffindor did tend to attract competitive personalities.

“Ican also come by some time and see about taking care of them. I’vedone a few de-gnomings in the past, I really don’t mind.” Hegrinned, attempting to wink at the babbling twins conspiratoriallyand failing spectacularly. “Plus I’m easily wooed by tea andpudding.”

Asdelicious as the strawberry shortcake was, it was very rich and itdidn’t take long for Tilden to feel full. Setting his fork down, hereached for a napkin and sat back, politely wiping crumbs from thecorners of his mouth. “That’s so good,” he said with asatisfied sigh. “But it makes me feel like now I need to run homeinstead of Apparate, just to make up for it.”

Surveyingthe remaining dessert, he found himself thinking back on her earlieroffer of teaching him some baking. “About the cobbler,” he said.“I’d love to learn how to make it. I’m not terrible in thekitchen – I think it probably comes from all the potion-making –but baking is… uh, tricky, haha.” He shook his head, thinking ofhis attempts at baking in the past. None had been spectacular enoughfailures to really be worth talking about, but they definitely hadn’tbeen resounding successes either. “My mum’s more of a cook than abaker, you know? But she still has a few really good recipes. ThatI’ve never been brave enough to try for myself for the most part.”

Everyoneknew that Molly Weasley’s baking was some of the best around. Ifanyone could successfully teach him how to bake, he imagined it wouldbe her.

“Oh, there’s a thought.” The ginger witch grinned, a bright light in her brown eyes. “They do seem like the type to enjoy a good bout of competition.” She had been in Gryffindor during her time at Hogwarts and knew first-hand how driven the house could be, given the right motivation. 

Her eyes flickered between the twins at her side and Tilden and she couldn’t help but laugh at his attempted wink, nodding her head knowingly. “I’ve found through experience that all of the best people are wooed by tea and pudding.” Pushing aside a fallen curl, she continued. “Don’t know if I’d care to know the sort that aren’t.”

Finishing off the last remains of the cake happily, the witch leaned back with a smile as she set down her own fork in agreement at Tilden’s remark. “I tell you, it’s one of my favorite things on the menu.” Well, alongside the sweet waffles, fresh made scones with clotted cream and jam, or a good slice of cheesecake.

“Don’t remind me.” The witch sighed in response to running, her hand reaching behind her head to rub her neck at the word. She could practically hear the fat on her stomach laughing. “If there was a diet that let me eat shortcake every day, I’d be a very happy witch.” Perhaps Andromeda and Rommie would be up for starting a workout group together, she mused comically. That was a thought.

Her face lit up at Tilden’s willingness to take her up on the suggestion. “If you’re alright with potions, baking will come very naturally, I promise.” Mentally, she was already shifting through a few starter tips that she had in mind.

“Let me know if you’ve got a few of those recipes lying around you can bring them along and we’ll give them a try sometime.” She smiled warmly. “There’s nothing better than a bit of homemade food to pick you up on a bad day, especially if it’s something that you had growing up.” Most of Molly’s best recipes had been passed down to her from her mother and grandmother before her. “You’re welcome anytime.”

Turning her head to check the clock on the wall, the witch straightened, her expression falling slightly. “Oh, would you look at that. We’ve somehow chatted away past teatime and straight into the evening. Don’t want to keep the boys at home worrying.”

Reaching into the patchwork bag at her side, she pulled out a bright green change purse decorated with little white daises. It had been a gift from Arthur and obviously had gotten a lot of use over the years. Snapping the clasp open, she plucked out the correct change from the various coins and set them down upon the wooden table with a small smile, not allowing Tilden the chance to offer to help with the bill.

“This was lovely. It’s my treat.”
