Finding out how many dialectal features I use always surprises me but I can accept that it makes sense. What I can't understand is that not everyone says "summat"

Where I'm from (in the US), we often say "sum'mn" (with a glottal stop in between the Ms) to mean the same thing. Other times we'll say "sum-thin." You're right, saying "something" every time is tedious, and so we don't really do that.
