“Don’t worry about what I’m doing.”
“Why would I? It isn’t as if I make it a focus of mine to concern myself with your business.”
“Oh, you! Well, yes, you – of course. I have a vitally important question for you,” she exclaimed, quick to jog over to whom she had addressed, her blue hues alight with curiosity. “Okay, okay. Pepper imps or wizochoc? Remember, this is life or death. ”
Meredith stood still for a moment, confused by the out-of-the blue question. She didn’t see how it was life or death- answering which candy she’d have preferred- but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t give the girl an answer. “Pepper imps, definitely.”
“Oh, shit, yeah, I can totally –” Alarmed as Marlene was, her “no-no filter” – as her mother used to call it – had stopped working momentarily, “I mean, of course yeah,” she corrected herself, “Take a seat, Meredith, while I get the bandages,” The girl advised before looking through the jars on the counter top beside her in search for the most reasonable size, “Slughorn giving you hell already? Should I be scared?”
“I hope I’m not taking you away from doing anything that’s important.” Meredith did as Marlene said, taking a seat on the edge of a chair. “No, no, I don’t think so at least.” she answered, shaking her head, “This was just a result of my stupidity. I was working too fast and the next thing I know Slughorn was telling me to come up here.” Compared to her normal demeanor, Mer seemed almost resigned. If anyone were to ask, she wouldn’t admit that she was feeling a tad bit embarrassed.
“You’re not gonna rat me out, are you?”
“If I were to, I’d be getting myself in trouble as well. Frankly, there’d be no point.”
“Although I’m sure you’d love to offend me, I happen to think my prissiness is rather endearing. And my opinion of myself is the only one that really matters, right?” she asked with a shrug of her shoulders. “Now you’re just being unfair. I had no prior knowledge of whose seat this was, only that it was available for the taking. You should really learn better ways to mark your territory. And no, pissing on things doesn’t count.”
“I’d love to knock your ego down a peg or two, but it seems like that isn’t going to happen. What a shame.” She crossed her arms, raising her eyebrows as she added “I had never thought of doing that before, but why do you tell me not to? Is that your way of marking things?”
I’m sorry I just - I needed my textbook and it fell and - I’m really sorry.
“Then you should get it, and keep going on your way. Don’t just dally about wasting time.”
“How riveting.”
"Sometimes I wonder if you really even care to concern yourself with what others have to say.”
“It might be a little hard to understand. Maybe if you repeat everything one more time, I’ll understand?”
“Maybe if you weren’t acting like a prat, you wouldn’t have to ask people to repeat themselves. Anyways, repeating myself would just be a waste of time at this point.”
Come on, There’s honestly no need to fuss. Is it really that bad?
“Considering I’m no healer, and that I’d probably make things worse if I were, I’m going to pass on making any sort of judgement.”
With a grin and a little jump, Sarah cheered, “Yes! So you take back those threats you made earlier? I don’t feel like getting hexed today, no sir.”
“They were idle threats anyways, you had no real reason to be worried. But, if I'm being honest, you really do have a tendency to get on my nerves.”
“You could move around me if it would please you more. There’s plenty of room. Or do you need to step right in this spot?”
“At the time, there were other people around you and I simply couldn’t. I don’t think that’s a hard thing to understand.”
Marlene had spent the latter half of Thursday in the infirmary. Not for her own illness, mind you. This little Puff managed to find the afternoon off – aka skipping History of Magic – and what better way to spend her free time than doing inventory for Madam Pomfrey while she was out? Granted she’d rather be helping patients but, alas, not very many kids come through the doors of the clinic within the first week of term. Marlene was halfway through inspection of the Skel-o-Grow, when she realized she wasn’t alone, “Poppy, do we have anymore of the — Oh…you’re not Madam Pomfrey,” she addressed the familiar face.
“Madam Pomfrey, I am not,” said Meredith, as she stepped further into the infirmary. Frankly, she would be rather worried if she had spontaneously became the witch- Merlin knows she’d muck something up with all of the potions that were used around the ward. Taking the girl’s statement to mean that Pomfrey wasn’t in, she had no choice but to talk to her. “D’you think I could get a bandage or something?” she raised up her hand, which was sporting a cut on it. “My hand slipped while I was cutting ingredients for a potion, I’m sure you can figure out the rest.”
“You may have to tell that to the rest of the hallway, but I’m fine with letting you ahead of me into this mess.”
“I can see the hallway is crowded, but you just standing in the middle of it isn’t doing anything to help that. Matter of fact, it might as well be making things worse.”
“—— Is there any possibility there were Transfigurations notes lying here before you sat down? I think I left them here.”
“I don’t remember seeing anything, sorry. That said, I probably wouldn't have paid any mind to them if they were left. Maybe they fell onto the floor?”
“That’s what they all say.”
“I’ve found in the past that I’ve never fit in well with generalized groups of people.”
“Prissy is probably the nicest compliment anyone could ever give me, so no, thank you. I love people thinking I’m prim and proper,” she said with a pleased grin. “Don’t beat yourself up about it, one day you’ll learn to hold your temper over a taken seat, which I thought only first years got upset about… Anyway, you’ll get there eventually.”
“Except you go about being those things in such an annoying manner. It wasn’t a compliment, and you shouldn’t take it as such,” she crossed her arms, leaning back in her chair. “Right. As if taking someone’s seat isn’t bad manners.”
“It’s a talent of mine.”
“But then again, you’ve only got a year to figure out what you want to do with your life. That seems to me like it would be another large hurdle to clear.”
