Why do fictional characters never have plausible nicknames?

Seriously. Whenever somebody in a movie or a book has a nickname, it always comes off as awkward. Imma give y’all a few examples:

Tobias from the Divergent series is called “Four” because there are only four things he’s afraid of. Pop quiz: Have you e v e r met somebody with a number for a nickname?

Cameron Williams from Left Behind is called “Buck” because he bucks the system. Like if people would notice that I always read books, and start calling me “Read.”

Noonian Soong from Star Trek: The Next Generation got called “Often Wrong” as a mean nickname. That’s… that’s barely a nickname. And doesn’t rhyme, although it kinda seems meant to.

Like you might have noticed, the overarching theme here is that they try to be clever about nicknames. There’s always some Clever Explanation for why that particular person has that particular nickname. That’s just not how it works in real life, 99% of the time.
