City Slickers ‘Global Gladiators’ SEGA Mega Drive
Throwing rocks, spin attack, body jump, flame thrower, hover surfing, etc.!
I’m trying to make this very combat oriented, and different from regular SM64 hacks
Big success yesterday with my attempts to use an OpenOffice Calc spreadsheet to automate script editing and encoding for Metal Gear. I’ve been working on the sheet for a few days in the hopes it might speed things up. When I originally did the hacking for this translation it was all done manually in hex and text editors. Any edits, even minor ones, took hours to complete and test. I verified the system yesterday with a test ROM, and it’s working perfectly.
So, yesterday afternoon I started a new revision of the translation. Basically, I want to see what refinements can be had. The spreadsheet will allow me to make changes and instantly see the effects on space economy. The other versions of the hack were complete in terms of meaning and amount of messages, but have always (and will still be) frugal with memory space. During Metal Gear’s original development, Konami even had to disable four messages coded into the game in order to save space to fit the 128KB ROM. A few minor changes to encoding have already freed up over 100 extra bytes through more efficient compression.
At this rate, I’ll probably be releasing a complete patch this weekend or next week. I’ll ship it around to places like Romhacking.net and put out some posts on Zophar’s Domain and MSX.org. I’m kind of curious how well that’s all going to go since I don’t have my old email address or accounts that I used at the time to link my current ‘net identity to the old one. I’d like people to enjoy it, as I have.

Beyond the Blackbox: A Response
Earlier this year, Ms. Jaime Lee Kirtz wrote an article called “Beyond the Blackbox: Repurposing ROM Hacking for Feminist Hacking/ Making Practices,” published in issue no. 13 of Ada New Media. (link: https://adanewmedia.org/2018/05/issue13-kirtz/) While I’m not familiar with the publication itself, I’m always surprised to see any mention of ROM hacking outside the wacky tubes we call the Internet.
Now, I’m sure many of you are expecting me to tear into the article and go on the attack; but really I’m not. Now, it’s been a while since I was in college and reading peer-reviewed texts, so the extremely verbose writing style is a bit difficult for me to comprehend. The fact that political musings on the philosophical nature of feminism are constantly included makes comprehension even more of a challenge, at least for me. But that being said, I do appreciate that Dr. Floppy and Popehentai were quoted and given at least a somewhat fair shake considering the publication’s nature.
I do want to challenge the writer’s interpretation that women are unwelcome in ROM hacking, or that the very nature of ROM hacking is anti-female. While I do, to some extent, agree with Dr. Floppy that the very nature of ROM hacking itself may not appeal to women; however, I do not think that women as a whole would find the hobby to be unenjoyable. Hacking, whether it be ROMs or any other media, is a subculture to begin with. As the article implies, hacking itself generally has a negative connotation in society, thanks to a poor representation in pop culture. So, it’s no wonder that few men, and many fewer women, become a part of a hacking community.
All that being said, I really do wish that more women and girls took part in ROM hacking. In fact, I wish that more folks in general took part in ROM hacking! As in any creative medium, there is no greater joy than planning a project, putting in the effort, and seeing the final result to completion. With ROM hacking, the end result is a playable game, customized to your own wants and specifications.
For me, one of the greatest joys of my life was seeing the completion of “Donner Party,” a group-effort ROM hack that I had a small part in its completion. That hack’s second level was completed by Bobbie Doll Blue, a first-time female ROM hacker who is still a part of the BHDN community today. It’s a great level, and an amazing effort for any hacker - even moreso for a first-timer!
I do wonder what the article’s author would think of our site’s current plans for upcoming ROM hacks. “Subway the 13th” is set to have half of the playable characters be women; and “Donner Party 2″ is planned to have Agent Felicia King as a player character in one level (the level I’m currently planning, tentatively titled “F.U.C.King Wet!”).
While I can’t address any potential feminist concerns about the other two female characters in “Subway the 13th,” Felicia King is a character of my own creation who is set to appear in both hacks. I won’t go into detail describing her here, both to save space and to avoid potential spoilers. But in short, she’s a character who’s strong in spirit and in body, and also quite attractive. She’s a tough action heroine, inspired by my own favorite heroines - such as Lara Croft, Samus Aran, and Nikita. While she’ll face great challenges in both hacks, and can potentially take a lot of damage (depending on how good a player is at the controls), Felicia King will likely be one of the most powerful player characters in both games.
Of course, there’s a great deal that can be said about this topic, so I will leave it here for now. In closing, I do wish to stress that I do not want to rail on or make fun of the article. While my blog is certainly no peer-reviewed journal, I have intended this to be an honest and respectful response to the article in question. If any of you readers decide to contact the original publication, or post your own thoughts here or elsewhere, I would encourage you to be constructive in your criticism and avoid abusive language. That sort of posting is not helpful to anyone, and only serves to drive people away from our hobby.

How 2 Into RIM Harking
Step One: U may think this has something to do with abusive language of which I am a pro at, since I’m lazy & retarded. It doesn’t. Step Two: U may think this has something to do whether or not you wrote a proper tutorial. It only partially does. Step Three: U may think this has entirely to do with your perception of legality and whether or not u have something to fear from the Korporate Kopyright Kartel. It absolutely does, so let’s explain what will make you give less of a shit.
I don’t care about fancy VPNs or using Tor or I2P 24/7. I think you have some sort of odd perception about whether or not you’re going to be hunted down unless you join the Big Boy Booger Eating Squad of fanciness, since these peeps like to LARP on and on about the potential risk you may have, but I’m here to remind you that their threats are about as valuable as the average po-po commercial about wearing your seat belt at every chance unless you might get pulled over. Keep in mind the average pot-head willing to be blasted in the face over their dumb drugs by po-po, and now place this onto the shell of what you think a DMCA notice actually means and how much every single goody-two-shoes immediately drops everything they’re doing once they seez it.
https://asmb.itch.io/dmcas-sky This was called No Mario’s Sky, but Nintendies got mad and told ‘em it’s a big no-no. So, he changed it to DMCA’s Sky like a t0tal b0ss. That’s what we’re here for today. A lot of peeps want to try and act like me acting like a douchnozzle is what’s going to get you to run away frum dis internet and go bash your head against a wall just to try to erase the thought of me from your memory. It doesn’t werk; trust me, I’ve tried.
Take in mind that making a hacc called sumthin’ like Super DMCA Bros. is a necessity, because y’all can choke on it. Maybe u can lern to die for somthin’ or sit there and look pretty.
Y'all only slightly gotta worry about ~torrenting~ (specifically) any modern movies, shows or music which I don’t even care about. No one cares about gaemz, Copyright is set up so that only the First Lawyer gets the munny. When Nintendie takes down a ROM site, only Nintendie profits off the piracy of the other ROMs that are not their property. They do not share the spoils with any other developer, although they all claim they’re all harmed by it. Early bird gets the reparations.
Dis is mah other site thingy, but let’s have some crossposting of me being hysterically retarded since I’ve nothing better to do with my life besides ending it all, oh whoa what a dreary night befallen me, I cannot see the light although I wish I could, oh Lordy Lordy plz take me in to see a chiropractor: https://nahsieto.wordpress.com/2018/11/14/im-quitting-rom-hacking/
