The Importance of Genres
The Importance of Genres
Music genres are like stereotypes; labels we put on a specific “group” to categorize them as being the same thing. Although in some cases they may be fitting, in my opinion, they are a lazy ass’ way of explaining a band. Yeah, Metal Core Band A might use the basic formula as Metal Core Band B: Melody + Breakdown + Clean chorus + Repeat = song, but nine times out ten this is total crap. How…

What I Learned in the Moshpit
What I Learned in the Moshpit
I know what you’re probably thinking if you have never moshed before, “Oh my gawd! What are they doing hitting each other like a bunch of maniacs!?” Well, it’s more than just a sausage fest of sweaty guys – even though you still probably understand just by reading this, let me try my best to explain… 1) It’s how you dance to metal: You can’t salsa to a breakdown or guitar solo, so we mosh. What…

How to Write a Song
How to Write a Song
If you don’t live under a rock, you’ll know that there are thousands of metal bands out there and maaaaybe a few hundred that have “made it.” How did they make it you ask? Is it their gimmicks, sex appeal, guitar pedals…? It could be – but probably not. What sets a good band apart from a great one is the quality of their songs. There’s not a gimmick in the world that could save your career from…

Illegal Downloading: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Illegal Downloading: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
We’ve all done it… I’m not here to judge. Half the music on my iPhone is from kingdom leaks or lime wire (if it came out a few years ago). We all ALSO know it’s wrong, but nevertheless, I’m not here to gripe about that – instead, I’m going to hit this topic from both sides, starting with the argument for it first – didn’t see that coming did you!? Pro illegal downloading: If you read my…

What I Learned From Playing In a Band
What I Learned From Playing In a Band
I’m going to skip the usual introduction that goes with my shorter articles like this; the title sums up what I’m about to elaborate on pretty well. Thanks for reading, hope you enjoy! 1) It’s harder than you think: I know it looks like all a band does is party and bullshit (Biggie reference), but what you don’t know is that it takes years and years of hard work, practice and patience for you to…

Why Music Festivals Are Evil
Why Music Festivals Are Evil
We all love a good multi-day concert: they’re always the perfect chance to see all of your favorite bands in one place in a few days – what efficiency! But wait, why did my title suggest the opposite? Oh yeah, they suck! In my opinion, here’s why: 1) Time slots: The lineup is brutal to your musical soul; I doubt it’s a coincidence that the headliners all play at the same time, but on different…

Home Recording vs. Professional Studio
Teaser: “...as the old saying goes, “the more choices you have means there are more wrong choices to make.” Don’t stress out; people put way too much emphasis on gear, which studio to use and what program to use when they should be focusing more on...”

Why Bands Turn Mainstream
Teaser: “Did they decide to write a great album, and from then on just say, “You know what guys, f%$k it! Let’s suck from now on!" This is usually not the case, they just...”

The Art of Crowdsurfing
We’ve all seen it before. You’re at a show, it’s getting pretty rowdy and you start to see people flying off stage... Learn how here.
To Vinyl, or Not to Vinyl?
Teaser: “An intimate moment with a vinyl record is something you can admire like a piece of fine art. It’s subtle imperfections make it relate to us as humans. If only we could take it with us everywhere we went.”

Going to a show this summer?

Hello everyone,
We’ve gained a ton of support over the last year and I’m extremely grateful for everyone who has visited our page; thank you so much. Metal Digest began as a metal news site, then a place to find awesome underground bands, and then a local music page; I’ve decided these are all things done by other people – things that aren’t 100% me.
So now that I’ve put everything out there on the table, I’ll be real about who and what I really am and what Metal Digest will be: (a) I’m an obsessive metal fan + (b) I love to write = © Metal Digest: A Metal Diary.
This will be a place of whatever random metal-related thoughts I have bouncing around in my head without filters, promotions, advertising, or set goals; just a blank page for me to write about the music I love. I sincerely hope you all love it as much as I do, there will be a forum page for anyone who does or wants to put down their two cents, which is greatly appreciated.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to shoot me an email at [email protected] or leave a comment in our forums [once they are up and running].
Thanks again for all your support, keep rocking everyone.
Yours truly, Sean
