[TP]: the few sources that made it this far says that ‘the totem is used in the totem lathe’

[TP]: which means you put the thing in the sewing machine

[TP]: just mess with it a bit im sure nothing bad will happen

The totem is clamped into the lathe, and the card is put into the slot. The machine whirs to life and creates a curved totem.
