John Carpenter originally wanted a cross between a wolf and a vampire, but the final design by Boss Film Studios was based more on the Yeren, a Bigfoot-like creature from Chinese folklore said to inhabit the mountains of Hubei.
Vietnam veteran Noble Craig lost both legs and an arm in the war, yet used his unique physical capabilities to give the monster its distinct, unnatural movement. Craig’s performance along with the complex cable-controlled facial mechanics brought this goofy cult icon to life.
