How I actually feel in my AP English Literature class

Am I the only one who can’t efficiently write essays because of a fear that what I write is incredibly stupid? Is it normal for me to end up ignoring most of my thoughts and erasing much of what I write and afterward end up with a really small product? Why do I try to cover this all up by saying things like “I didn’t really read the book” or “I procrastinated” to prove that I’m at the same level as everyone else?
