Its difficult to accept the terminology for feminine men's identity is wrapped up in transmisogyny and that a lot of what might superficially empower us is mostly based in either differentiating ourselves from transfemininity, which is the Bad Thing, or just appropriating transmisogynist language and wrongly thinking we can reclaim and reframe it. If something is too easy to claim it might mean that it just doesnt carry the same weight when you say it, is what I've learned. On the flip side, a lot of people will just tell you being a feminine man in itself is more perverse and bad and regressive than being any other type of man, and that is just its own form of anti-feminine sentiment. We have to carve a path forward with good intention to form vocabulary for our experience where it is genuinely needed, and to find a framework for the ways we really are degraded rather than borrowing what is pitched as describing us only because we are equated with a more marginalized group. The words and experiences that seem less weighty or meaningful precisely because they've been used to degrade us. There is no answer to the question of how to describe yourself perfectly because the world hasn't even gotten there yet. Let's all take the hard road to self actualization. Together

I would find the argument of lolisho being just art for adults that isnt meant for children and doesnt effect them unless something in the system goes wrong more compelling if like. Black Butler and other works that would be considered defining works in lolisho subculture didnt run in shonen magazines with kids as a target demographic. All the American otaku kids I knew read Black Butler and fixated on the child characters and the power fantasy presented that was tied up in an adults fantasy of a child. That is a very present thing in Japanese youth's development of self image, but manga and anime are also worldwide and we do not yet live in a world where loli and shota are vocabularies of well gatekept pornography rather than vocabularies of tropes in non-adult exclusive media. When I was a kid online, the words were just common use tropes that children had total access to if they hung around nerds. Now, we live in a world that's very reactionary towards an abstract looming potential evil art that has the name lolisho, but which doesn't really understand children as an oppressed class and so can't conceive of the actual harm of a vocabulary of tropes meant to create a perfect child for an adult gaze. No one really makes the arguments that get to the heart of my experience defining myself by these images as a child. The complexity of growing up fixated on those images and narratives and defining yourself heavily by the vocabulary of what amounts to dehumanized stereotypes. Viewing yourself through the visual vocabulary of the people who hold all the power over you and who are incentived to harm you. It's not untrue that you can be groomed by any material, but it seems clear to me that material which gives you a model of the ideal child for you to embody would effect you in a precise way.

I understand that for most its a "theoretical" that this material would harm children, but for me and my friends its just something that we must unpack. I think a lot of people who might seem to be performing terror at the idea that grooming COULD happen are trying to articulate what was taking place when it DID happen. They are then often taken advantage of by reactionaries who truly do live only off theoretical harm. But I still believe there's something to articulate beyond a motivation for conspiracy and violence.

It's like what any minority group describes when they recall existing in a world where media depictions were made up entirely of stereotypes. The possibilities they could imagine for themselves became limited to the gaze of their oppressors. Efforts to conceptualize yourself are hindered by the version of you that you know those in power desire for you. Even when that does not result in or from grooming, I feel it has an impact.

I struggle to judge these tropes on the basis of the theoretical world where they are isolated save for fringe cases, where they are even best defined as "pornography" rather than culture & subculture, or where it exists alongside proper children's rights and sex education. It existed for me as the only vocabulary to conceive of my childhood sexuality. It existed for me as what was cool, cute, mature, childish, loveable, desirable, and valuable. When I imagine myself as a child, I still see myself through the vocabulary of those images. It was my "representation". That's what I think needs to be contended with. Just like any other collection of stereotypes that emerge when a group has no voice or power. How can art like that avoid becoming instructive? It's all you have.

For anybody not caught up: Tennessee just passed a new map that pretty much makes it so black neighborhoods have no power in local votes. Two things about this. While protestors were chanting "No Jim Crow", white Tennessee lawmakers were caught laughing on video. On top of this, Representative Justin Pearson and his brother KeShaun Pearson were arrested for trying to give their takes on the matter (which is not only their legal right but literally his job). If you give a shit about black people, help fight this. We can't allow a return to Jim Crow.

Additional information: State lawmakers have been gunning for Pearson and Jones nearly their entire terms. Most notably, in 2023, the House expelled them for participating in a protest at the Capitol. Their districts had to have special elections to have them reinstated.

Pearson is one of the plaintiffs of a lawsuit seeking an injunction against the redistricting.

The city most affected by the redistricting is Memphis, where locals are fighting against xAI's data center, which has been operating with very little oversight and is poisoning the people who live there. Here is a previous post on that with more information and more sources.
