15 Things to do at UMass!
Ok, so I’ve been getting a lot of questions about what to do at UMass as incoming freshmen who want some insight into how to get the most out of college and be active on campus! Here are 15 tips of things you can do!
1. Go to the gym! We have a brand new, huge recreation building that is great to let out some stress on the treadmill, or take some group fitness classes such as Zumba, yoga, ballet, hip hop, spinning etc for free! Grab a friend and have a few laughs as you get moving.
2. Go downtown to a coffee shop or a restaurant. There are such yummy places in downtown Amherst such as the famous Antonio’s Pizza, Miss Saigon, Starbucks, Judy’s, Amherst Coffee (my favorite coffee shop!!!), CVS, Black Sheep, Baku’s, Bruegger’s Bagels, Frozen Yogurt store, Chinese food, Amherst Ice Cream, clubs like Monkey Bar and Lit, and bars such as McMurphey’s, Stacker’s, The Pub and so much more!
3. Go to the library and get some great food at the Procrastination station. Check out the floors and a book!
4. Go to the Mullins Center to ice skate! Skate rentals are $5 and its free entrance to UMass students.
5. Go to the malls! Hop on the bus at the Fine Arts Center called Hagis Mall to go the Holyoke mall.
6. Go check out the Fine Arts selection of theatre, music and other shows of performances that are mostly free to undergraduate students or at most $5 dollars.
7. Go swim at the many pools available such as Tottman, Boyden or Hicks Currey!
8. Go check out the Duffrey Conservatory which is one of my favorite places on campus! Its a green house filled with humid air and plants from all over the world. Theres benches you can sit on and read a book if you like.
9. Go to a concert! UMass hosts a ton of concerts at the Mullins Center throughout the year such as the fall concert, spring concert, and EDMS. I saw Skrillex 2 years ago, and they have brought in Jason Derulo, Kesha, Fetty, Tinashe, and tons of other artists.
10. Go check out the program council events, they host so many cool events for people in the club, but also those who just want to go to a specific one. They advertise their events on their facebook page so go like it to find out more!
11. Go search on Facebook for clubs such as UMass Outting Club, UMass (insert interest) club and you will get notifications of cool things to do.
12. Go chill out my the campus pond or the Puffer’s Pond! These are great spots that are very popular.
13. Check out the art exhibitions around campus such as at the FAC, or the Southwest Hampden Gallery.
14. Go on a hike! There are nearby mountains such as Mt. Sugarloaf, Mt.Bare, etc if you want to go with a couple of friends and enjoy some nature with exercise. You can also join people in the outting club as they go on many weakly trips to nearby hikes. Go like their Facebook page to see more, UMass Outting Club!
15. Check out Frat Row on North Pleasant Street for some parties on a weekend! Consider joining Greek Life if your are interested!
Hope this helps people, and especially incoming freshman gain an insight into some of the possibilities you can have at UMass! :D
