Hoodies Series: Stephanie Brown by ~MGNemesi

Took me a while, but *finally* here comes the Steph!

I think there's a gazillion of inking tutorials out there, but I'm often asked how I ink so... here's a few tips, I guess? They're nothing special - this tutorial is actually very short and simple, but I hope it can be even marginally useful to you all. ♥

First of all, I religiously scan my sketches at a resolution of 300Dpi. The brush settings vary depending on what I am working on. The Chibies and the Nemebird are usually inked with a hard round bush with peculiar transfer settings to mime coloured makers. For my "Hoodies" series (see the Steph above) I went for a brush+china ink look. I want the final outline to be similar to an animation production cell. Dark, smooth, varied.

The brush is a standard "Round Point".  Bristles 31%, Lenght 137%, Thickness 1%, Stiffness 85%, angle 0% and a spacing of 2%. The standard settings, actually. ^^;;  For this series, I work at an average of 50 to 66% zoom. I try not to blow the image any bigger. Why, you ask? Well, because I'm trying to mime the effects I'd obtain by using a standard Windsor&Newton brush and some china ink. I want my lines varied, and not too thin. Now, the real peculiarity of how I ink - is how I... err... move my hand, I guess. Example 01 is what you get by inking using quick, ample strokes. The line is interesting, varied, but it's not precise. (note that I exaggerated it a bit to make the point clearer; but to be completely honest you CAN move your wrist in quick strokes and still have a nice, precise lineart. Example 02 is what you get by moving ssssssssllllllllllllooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwlllllllllllyyyyyyyyyy. The contour of our clover is really precise, but the quality of the line is more reminiscent of a fine maker than a brush: the thickness almost never changes, and the lines are wobbly in places, especially when I've got to draw a curve. Example 03 - that's the Neme method! Basically, what art school will tell you to never do, and what animators do... err... do. Many, little jerks of you wrist to create many, hairbreadth-wide lines. I also move my hand very quickly, which is usually a no-no when inking. Don't be afraid to make a wrong line - you can erase it or keep passing onto it until the curve and thickness of it are just right.

I asked for suggestions here on tumblr, and in the end I felt that the colours that define him best are black, white (the perfect neutrals, but also the two extremes) and red. So I played around with those. Hope you agree with me!
